After eight seasons, the NHL disappears from the southeast as the Atlanta Flames relocate to Alberta and become the Calgary Flames. This is the only time to date that an NHL franchise has kept its nickname intact after relocating. Elsewhere in 1980, the Pittsburgh Penguins finally drop the blue, going with black and gold uniforms instead.
