My Disappointing Jersey Collection

I'm not sure why it took this long.

The other night I mentioned via Twitter my intentions to buy a blue 2011 All-Star jersey. And that I hoped Steven Stamkos would get picked for that team so I could customize it. Then someone asked about the extent of my personal jersey collection.

All right, I admit it. I know full well why it took this long.

Some might say I write a somewhat popular blog on the topic of hockey jerseys with a rather nerd-like knowledge. And as such, it would make sense that I have an extensive collection of sweaters of my own. This might surprise you, but actually... I don't.

At present, I own just five hockey jerseys — all replicas. Perhaps due to that revelation, there was enough of a response on Twitter that I figured I'd share them and the reasons they're in my closet. However humiliating.

As my headline warns, prepare to be disappointed by my feeble collection — half of which you'll expect, half of which you won't. And to delay the embarrassment I have coming, I will be presenting them in reverse chronological order, starting with the newest.

Tampa Bay Lightning

Third jersey (2008—2011)

It shouldn't surprise you to learn that half of my meager collection is made up of Lightning jerseys. As I've said many times, I'm a true Bolts fan and have been since the day Phil Esposito and some Japanese guys brought them to Tampa in the early '90s.

When this third jersey was revealed in November 2008, it was widely criticized on this very website for its pedestrian crest. BOLTS? On the front of the sweater? I wasn't even sold at first. But it quickly grew on me. I call them the Bolts all the time. Why can't the jersey say that?

But the most important factor? I've wanted a blue Lightning jersey for years. There's nothing wrong with black, but blue is just as important in Tampa Bay's color scheme. Why had we gone so many years without one? So when it finally happened, I had to have it.

Now that it sounds like my Bolts are going with blue at home, I'm just beside myself.

Tampa Bay Lightning

Home jersey (2007—2011)

If you've been a reader since the beginning, you'll remember I posted pictures on the blog when this jersey arrived. That was Sep. 20, 2007, not long after the Lightning first unveiled the sweater. That was the Summer of Reebok. And nothing has been the same since.

Believe it or not, I'd never owned my own Lightning jersey prior to that. I haven't needed to. In the handful of seasons leading up to the Lightning's Stanley Cup championship, my dad used to buy game worn jerseys, some of which were even autographed.

He picked up Nikolai Khabibulin's No. 35, Tim Taylor's No. 27, and Brad Richards' No. 19 to name a few. During that incredible Cup run, I wore the Richards jersey to every game. I was devastated when they traded him in 2008. (Glad to see him back on Marty St. Louis' team for the All-Star Game — although annoyingly sharing Stamkos' No. 91.)

Anyway, when the new jerseys were unveiled I had to have one to properly represent my team. No other reason needed.

Florida Everblades (ECHL)

Road jersey, 10th anniversary (2007-08)

I had lived in Tampa my whole life, until 2007 when I got a job in Fort Myers — about two hours to the south. My closest team, geographically, became the ECHL's Florida Everblades, who were not affiliated with the Lightning at the time, but rather the Carolina Hurricanes.

It was easier and cheaper to drive 20 minutes and take in a Blades game than to drive two hours for a Bolts game. And even though I never found watching minor league hockey as fun as NHL hockey, it was still hockey.

While I could never not wear my Lightning jersey to a hockey game of any kind, my wife liked the Everblades' colors and uniforms. The Blades happened to be celebrating their 10th anniversary season and were wearing special sweaters to mark the occasion. So that's what I bought for her.

Now we live in Seattle so it just collects dust in the closet along with the next two on the list.

Nashville Predators

Home jersey (1998—2001)

This one may seem random, but there's a story. During a week-long family trip to Tennessee in the winter of 1999, we went to a Nashville Predators game — I believe on New Year's Day. For whatever reason, I really wanted to wear a Preds jersey. I was 15 so who knows what I was thinking.

We stopped into a sports store in downtown Nashville just a few blocks from the hockey arena so I could blow one of my first paychecks from the job I had just started. I wore the jersey to the game and that was pretty much it. They were playing the San Jose Sharks but I can't remember if they won.

A non-hockey fan friend of mine in Fort Myers used to wear it to Everblades games just to have a hockey jersey on. He joked that I should give him some facts about the Preds in case someone from Nashville ever came up to him. I told him that would never happen. Then it did. It was awkward.

I've never had a reason to wear that jersey since 2000. I'm not in any way a Predators fan — or a fan of any NHL team other than the Lightning. So that's the story.

Mighty Ducks of Anaheim

Third jersey (1996)

Here's where we end. And I am mortified.

It's true. I own what might possibly be the ugliest third jersey in NHL history. Why? Because I thought it was cool. Bet you didn't see that one coming.

I was 11 years old when this one debuted. I think I bought it in the bargain bin a year later at a Sports Authority. If I remember right, I got it for $28. And even at that rate it was way overpriced. But that season saw the launch of the NHL's Third Jersey Program which, somewhat ironically, spurred my interest in hockey uniform designs.

By that time, I'd only been watching hockey a few years, but it seemed NHL jersey designs were all set in stone, and frankly when you're a kid, that's kind of boring. Now I can look back nostalgically but in 1996, I saw for the first time that teams could try new things and be creative. As a creative person myself and not really that athletically-inclined, I fell in love with that aspect of the sport.

But the thing is, it was never that easy for me to see the variety that did exist in the league. The Internet as we know it today was barely in its infancy. There was no looking up photos on Google Images. No photo galleries on team websites. No Icethetics, to be sure.

Instead, I started learning about all of the NHL's jerseys by collecting hockey cards. Most kids would've been eager to see which new players they got as they unwrapped a new pack. For me, it was which new jerseys I got.

To this day, I still have that collection, thousands of cards going back to the early '90s. And when I saw Paul Kariya wearing this jersey, I figured it had to be awesome. Because he was. I've since learned that is faulty logic.

As my pathetic jersey collection clearly shows, I'm not a traditionalist in any sense. I love the vintage-style uniforms for teams that have a long history. Outside of that, I think a bit of creativity and outside-the-box thinking is warranted. But that doesn't mean I won't like the whatever the Lightning come up with, even if it lives up to the rumors. They're my team.

I love hockey sweaters as much as anyone else. Some choose to manifest that love with big jersey collections. Personally, I'm just not a fan of spending that much money on something that will collect dust in the closet. The only jersey I'll ever wear to a hockey game is a Lightning one. So I don't need any others.

But that won't stop me from collecting pictures of all the jerseys I can find.

So now that you've seen my collection, show me yours. Who among you has the best collection? Most eclectic? Biggest? Ugliest? Let's do a little competition. Maybe we'll even have a prize for the winner. Leave a note in the comments if you have a collection you're interested in putting on display. If enough people want to get involved, I'll set up a page and let everyone vote.

While there is nothing really notable about your Tampa jerseys, the Ducks Wild Wing Jersey is extremely rare.

I've seen game worn Ducks WW Jerseys of no ones go for over 2k. If yours was an "authentic" (w/ fight strap, etc.) I'd say it's worth well over $400. A replica (no fight strap) is probably worth over $150-$200.

Amazing what rare and ugly can do for you!

Very jealous you have that Ducks jersey. I've been looking for it for years and have never found one under $400 which my parents wouldn't let me pay for (even with my own money). Don't be disappointed you have it, because its a piece of Duck's history a lot of people would love to have. Treasure that jersey, as it is one of the most rare jersey's ever, and is something i desperately want.

I myself have an extensive collection. I have 35. All CCM or Koho.

I have 27 current teams, I'm missing the Panthers, Thrashers and Islanders.

I also have 3 Winnipeg Jets jerseys (I am from Winnipeg), a North Stars, Nordiques, Colorado Rockies, Whalers, and an Oakland Seals.

Jan 30 · 11:09 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterShane_M

I'm definitely interested in showing off my jerseys. I've got 8 NHL jerseys and 2 USA jerseys. I also have a few Buffalo Bills NFL jerseys, some New York Mets jerseys, and 3 Buffalo Bandits lacrosse jerseys. I'd have no problems at all showing these off.

I'd gladly put up my large jersey collection. It's entirely replicas, but it covers NHL, WHL, and team Canada stuff. There's even two more I haven't bought yet, but will in the next couple of weeks. I have all but two Canucks jersey's they've worn over 40 years on NHL play.

Jan 30 · 11:13 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterNick

While I appreciate the rarity of my replica Mighty Ducks jersey, I'd give it up in a heartbeat if it meant I could have a Lightning third jersey from that era — the one with the rain and waves. As a jersey enthusiast, I'm appalled by it. But as a Lightning fan, I've always loved it.

By the way, no photo links yet guys (had to edit some comments). Just gauging interest on the jersey collection contest. If you want to participate, you can mention what you own, but let's save the pictures for later when everyone who wants to can get involved.

Since I believe I'm the one that started this nonsense, I might as well go ahead and list what I've got. Turns out I miscounted: it's actually 23, not 24.

Belarus (red, 2010)
Boston Bruins (third, 2008- )
Calgary Hitmen (black, 1998-2009; Teddy Bear Toss, 2010; Heritage Classic, 2011)
Canada (white, 1974; red and white Olympic, 2010; tourist-trap black, 2010)
Chicago Blackhawks (WC, 2008)
Detroit Red Wings (WC, 2008)
Edmonton Oilers (blue, 1996-2007; third, 2001-07)
Montreal Canadiens (the five Centennial jerseys, though the 1940s one came from the Vintage/third program, 2003-07)
St. Louis Blues (third, 2008- )
Toronto "St. Pats" (Leafs' 75th anniversary, 2002)
Winnipeg Jets (blue, 1979-90; blue and white, 1990-96)

Sadly, I passed on getting Nashville's old mustard-yellow third when I was at the arena a few years ago (I was afraid of paying through the nose in duty -- turns out I needn't have worried), which I'm kicking myself over, not because it was a "nice" jersey -- it would've fought with my 1912 barberpole Habs jersey for ugliest in the collection -- but because it was unique, or at least would've been here in Calgary.

My next targets include the black Gretzky-era Kings jersey, the Whalers, the Nordiques, and an Oilers home (the blue and orange).

i have a TON of islanders jerseys, ranging from the acceptable (jonsson, peca) to the obscure (tim connolly, mariusz czerkawski, etc.). also interested in showing them off.

also feature some pretty cool ones from around the league in the '90s (jagr '90s penguins, p. bure panthers, home road and alt ziggy palffy kings)

Jan 30 · 11:19 AM PST | Unregistered Commenterb-ern

i have a red panthers jersey, an old school ccm blue panthers jersey, the reebok edge 3rd jersey because i'm a diehard panthers fan...but i also have a brad richards dallas stars jersey because i live in louisiana and stars games are the only nhl games i can feasibly go to and i love him now that he's not with tampa and i also have a roberto luongo canucks jersey because my aunt was in vancouver and i told her i loved luongo since he was an ex panther and asked for a shirt and she instead bought me a really awesome jersey.

Jan 30 · 11:20 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterJohnny Ringo

It's nothing to be ashamed of...except for that Ducks jersey, of course.

Mine is a little more expansive:
FLORIDA PANTHERS: Roberto Luongo (red alternate, signed), Branislav Mezei (red road, signed by 8 years of Florida Panthers), Anthony Stewart (navy authentic KOHO jersey, signed), David Booth (current navy), blank cheap replica (red)
PHILADELPHIA FLYERS: John LeClair (white, signed by 2000-2001 team), Jeremy Roenick (black, signed), John LeClair (orange alternate), Dan McGillis (orange road from late-90s)
PHILADELPHIA PHANTOMS: blank (white, "Wachovia Spectrum" shoulder patch)
PITTSBURGH PENGUINS: Sidney Crosby (white authentic rookie jersey, no C/A, signed), Sidney Crosby (2008 Winter Classic), Mario Lemieux (white jersey from early 2000s with Vegas Gold)
RIMOUSKI OCEANIC: Sidney Crosby (rookie, no C/A, navy, signed)
MONTREAL CANADIENS: Jose Theodore (red)
COLORADO AVALANCHE: blank cheap replica (white)
CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS: Chris Chelios (white, Nike jersey)
COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS: Rick Nash (rookie year, white, bug on shoulder), Nikolai Zherdev (navy/black alternate), Geoff Sanderson (white, oval/hat logo on shoulder)
EDMONTON OILERS: Wayne Gretzky (white, CCM throwback)
VANCOUVER CANUCKS: Roberto Luongo (blue home, current replica)
TEAM USA: Zach Parise (white, World Juniors jersey)
SAGINAW SPIRIT: blank (navy, 2007 5th Anniversary jersey)

I may be missing one or two, and I don't have all of them with me (moved from Florida to Mississippi and left some behind when I did, but they are still at my parents' house...I think).

Jan 30 · 11:20 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterDrew

I have every Sens jersey, save for the 'Bring Back the Senators' era promotional jersey, the white RBK Edge jersey, and the God-awful black SNES jersey (which is the only one I don't want!). This includes the vintage Barberpole sweater.

I also have the first three of the Habs Centennial sweaters (1909-10 Blue, 1910-12 Red, and the infamous (and wonderful!) Barbershop sweater), a full barberpole 67's jersey, a white 67's jersey, and a Montreal Maroons sweater.

Now that I've found a place that will include accents on player names, I'm planning to get a Marek Židlický Minnesota alternate jersey in the not too distant future.

One problem that I've found, aside from the cost obviously (most of mine have been Christmas/Birthday gifts) is the fact that a lot of the sweaters that I want aren't commercially available! Last summer, I learnt how to knit so that I can make myself sweaters for teams like the Montreal Shamrocks, Cobalt Silver Kings, Haileybury Comets, Seattle Metropolitans, etc. I have to say, it's going quite well!

My collection now includes a very slight modification on the Shamrocks' 1910 sweater (I added a white version of the logo from their 1900 sweater), and I will probably finish my Cobalt jersey within the week. I'll send you pictures of the two that I've made when my Cobalt sweater is finished.

I see you like blue/green/teal/black/touch of orange... the Sharks jersey would fit in nicely in your collection ! :D My own jersey collection is :
- Sharks home jersey (with Nabokov written on the back but it's not written properly as in the font. The girl at the store was dumb and when I got my jersey it was missing the orange outline around the numbers and the name doesn't have the right font)
- Sharks 3rd jersey
- Canadiens home jersey
- Montreal Junior away (dark because the QMHJL has whites as home) jersey since my friend played for them but he's now with the Chicoutimi Sagunéens so might trade it for one of their jerseys sometime I don't know.

I am a big fan of jerseys and I probabl started my collection about ten years ago. I currently own 117 jerseys over various sports. Being the cheapest of jerseys I'm interested in, 76 of them are football, including at least one of evey NFL team and a few college teams thrown in. 39 are hockey jerseys, a mix of Pro Player, CCM, Koho and Reebok Edge, most are NHL teams. There are a few throwbacks, a Nords, vintage Kings and Caps jerseys, and a few AHL thrown in for good measure. One jersey is a USA World Cup jersey from the most recent World Cup. And the final jersey is a throwback Cal Ripken, Baltimore Orioles jersey, since I'm from Baltimore. I'd love to share my collection with the equally jersey loving readers here on icethetics.

I've only been watching hockey for around three years, maybe a little less. I got into it when a friend I hadn't spoke to in years randomly invited me to a Rangers game she had an extra ticket to. I've been hooked ever since, getting my own partial season ticket plans the last two years. To start off my collection, I didn't know much about the team, so I ended up buying a Drury jersey (without the C) the year he was the captain, from a sports memorabilia store going out of business. Once I learned he was the captain and the jersey didn't have the C, and also that he wasn't playing very good (and still doesn't), I went to the NHL store and told them it was a gift and I wanted to change it for another player. Since they didn't have any other Rangers jerseys with players they told me they'd make one up, and that's how I ended up with my first jersey, which is a blue Adam Graves Reebok jersey, which I know is just horribly wrong but I didn't know any better. My 2nd jersey was a blue Sean Avery Rangers jersey that I bought for half price at the NHL store while he was on the Dallas Stars, right before he got traded back to the Rangers. Last year at the last game at MSG all jerseys were %50 off, so I bought a blue Marian Gaborik jersey, and a white 1994 Stanley Cup Mike Richter jersey. Since then I got two Heritage jerseys, one a Callahan, and another a blank that I won during the Heritage weekend through a twitter contest. I also bought a really badly customized Liberty jersey off of e-bay that I ended up not having to pay for, got another blank Libery jersey that I plan on customizing sometime in the future, and just bought an Authentic Liberty Gretzky jersey off of e-bay as well. I'm probably not done yet, but I can't help myself.

Hey, I think it's great that you have jerseys and wear them... basically, you get it. A lot of people don't... And don't feel bad about the Wild Wing 3rd (I have a Selanne one in that awful Mistral font), it's so ugly it's a benchmark. It's certainly a conversation piece!

Anyhow, I'd be up for collection talk/display... but it might be a bit tough to pick and choose. At last check, I'm up around 350 hockey jerseys (with a few football), with the hope to have one of every NHL team and Stanley Cup winner... ever. Just waiting on my Seattle Metropolitans to arrive any day now. :) I've got a few that would qualify as cool, and a few that would fall under the hideous category (Phoenix 3rd Pro Player authentic Khabibulin). Just let me know and I'll send a few pics!

I actually have a replica Lightning 3rd jersey from 1998 in M. Got lucky and found it on ebay. Those things are rare as you know, so I had to take advantage and get it.

I have a modest collection. 4 Blues jerseys, that bein my team. Used to have 5 but gave one to my mom so shed have something to wear at Blues games. Also have several others. Mostly from the mid to late 90's starter replicas because the logos are stitched and I like the conference logos and the way they feel. I'd klike to show off what I have to others interested in jerseys too (Dont get a chane to do that very often).

Jan 30 · 12:23 PM PST | Unregistered Commenterryan laden

heh, all I have is a home Toews Chicago Blackhawks sweater and a black Blackhawks practice jersey.

What can I say? I just don't see myself buying another team's jersey, even if they look good (like the Blues' thirds, which I'd rank the second best in the league, tbqh). I have Cubs, Bears, and Illini jerseys as well, and for the life of me I don't think I'll ever buy a jersey for a team that I don't love. I'm going to get the third jersey for the Hawks sometime in the near future and likely the away jersey in the next couple years, but besides that nothing else on the NHL level. If I still live in the NW suburbs of Chicago when the Express open up shop next season, I'll likely get one of their jerseys, too.

But that's it, I guess.... also never had a hockey sweater growing up, as my parents were of the fairly right mind that there's no point buying such an expensive piece of clothing for a kid that'll outgrow it in a year or two, haha.

I've had a few but they always seem to get stolen.

Canucks away jersey from 91
Oilers home and away 93 Oilers practice jersey same year.
Ottawa Senaters road from their expansion year.
New York Islanders home jersey from 97 or whenever the year was they went back to the classic logo and colours.
New York Rangers Jersey with Messier #11 from 95
Los Angeles Kings Gretzky era away
Los Angeles white from when they first went back to the purple.
St. Louis Blues Brett Hull jersey away. I actually picked this up from a thrift store.
Dallas Stars home from when they first moved to Texas.
Edmonton Oilers away first year of the cooper and blue.
Montreal Canadiens pre edge away from the 90's.
Montreal Canadien present home.
Edmoton Oilers vintage home jersey.
Edmonton Oilers new home jesery.
Edmonton Oil Kings pre edge jersey.
Boston Bruins Cam Neely jersey from the 80's

I also have:
Buffalo Bill Jim Kelly jersey home.

Team Canada green jersey from the Jr's in Saskatoon.
Edmonton Eskimo home jersey.

I pretty much have to agree with the man from Chicago. I really can't see myself buying jerseys from teams that aren't from my state. It helps though, being in New York, to have so many local teams. Aside from my Rangers jerseys I also have Yankees, Mets, Giants, Jets and Knicks jerseys. Even though I'm not an Islanders fan I can see myself eventually getting an old one or two since my father was a huge Islanders fan back in the 80's and even had full season tickets during their Cup runs. The way I see it is, if there's a player who is a larger than life figure in a sport I can see myself buying their jersey, but if they played for my team (like Gretzky or Favre) even if it wasn't the best part of their career I'm going to buy their jersey from my team instead of the team they're known for (like Edmonton or Green Bay).

I have a small jersey collection compared to most of you. All Reebok and CCM, though. =) I'm terrible at buying them and have to limit myself to at least two a year.

I have a CCM Flyers jersey, orange, from 1997. A black Flyers jersey (2008), and a new away jersey with Ian Lapperiere's name and number on it. I have a white Islanders jersey, CCM (early 90's), a replica red/green Devils jersey with Brodeur's name and number on it, and a purple Mighty Ducks jersey from their Cup run. One of my favorites is my red Panthers Beezer jersey. I have a new red Caps jersey and an old white one (ealy 90's). Lastly, a white Team USA jersey from the WJC in Buffalo this past year.
I love AHL games and used to leave near Hershey/Philly, so I have four Hershey Bears jerseys (home and away 2009, third jersey '09, third jersey '10) and a replica purple Phantoms jersey from their 2005 Calder Cup run.
Looking to get more, honestly. I love getting goalie jerseys (used to play myself years ago). They rarely collect dust, because I wear them twice a week.
(Oh, and on an odd note, I have a White Zombie band jersey that I bought at a hot topic back in the 90's.)

Only 1 in my collection right now... a white Joe Sakic / Avs jersey that I got right after the edge jerseys made their debut. Only a few jerseys on my wishlist right now, though

Everett - Green
Rouyn-Noranda - Red/Black
NYR - Edge Alt (Navy with Diagonal text)
Buffalo - Winter Classic '08
St. Louis - Blue or White (Best default home/away set in the league imo)

I'm up there for largest... this could take a while if I need to photograph all of these.... Now I included some that wern't "pro" jerseys because they are in my hockey jersey collection as a jersey collector. I left out my ones without logos or that were from hockey schools and such... these are ones with crested logos on them basically.

These are sorted somewhat chronologically. Essentially Minors - Pro - Other and then by year they were first worn.

Like many of the other commenter's, I own a bunch of hockey jersey's. I'd be willing to dig them all out and take some pics if this gets that far. I'd guess I have between 20-25, mostly Flyers since they're my team.

I'm only 17 Years old so my jersey collection is just starting(And a lot of my collection is of a CFL Teams Home and Retro Jerseys), but I have a few hockey jerseys as well.

Blank 2010 Team Canada Olympic Jersey (I'm planning on getting this customized with Thornton's Name/Number)

Hello,

I have been reading your blog for some time now. LOVE IT! Absolutely love it! Love your collection too. I own 2 "WildWings" and paid over $300 for each of them!.. The tampa bay waves jersey you speak of I OWN 3! YES 3 OF THEM!. I own close to 300+ jerseys!

Jan 30 · 2:15 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterBilly Mosetter

Haha, cool to see some fellow Ottawa fans here, myself, all replicas:

Original Ottawa Senators 'Barberpole' Sweater
'92-95 Sens black away jersey
'92 - 07 Sens white jersey (i know this one was tweaked a little during its years in use, but whatever. Also, bring it back!!)
97 - 07 Sens red jersey
2000 - 07 Sens black third
RBK Sens home (Spezza)
RBK Sens away
RBK SNES black third
WJC Team Canada red jersey - bought when WJC was in Ottawa :p

I'm one Sens jersey away from completing my collection, the '95 - 99 black jersey with the white stripe - also planning on picking up the new sens third next year, a 'Team Alfredsson' all-star jersey next year (that's right, I'm calling it) and a '67's jersey when I have some extra cash to throw at it (maybe this summer if they go on a decent playoff run)

I`ll give a shiny loonie to anyone who can guess who my team is...

Wow! That Mighty Ducks jersey is pretty rare. I almost forgot that they existed.

I've a bit of a collection myself. It's mainly comprised to Calgary Flames jersey's, but I've a few others as well. I liked to follow some of the players from the Flames to other teams (Fluery, Roberts, MacInnis)

Abbotsford Heat (AHL) 2010 Red Away
Calgary Flames (#9 Lanny McDonald) 1989 Red Away (This was my first Jersey. I've two of them, one is from 1989, the other is a 2007 replica)
Calgary Flames (#14 Theo Fluery) 1994 White Home
Calgary Flames Black 3rd Jersey
Calgary Flames 2003 Red Home
Calgary Flames 2003 White Away
Colorado Rockies (#9 Lanny McDonald) replica of 1981 era Blue Away from 2007
Chicago Blackhawks (#14 Theo Fluery) 2002 White Home
Chilliwack Bruins (WHL) 2007 White
Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights (AHL) 2006 White
Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights (AHL) 2006 Red
St. Louis Blues (#2 Al MacInnis) 1995 Blue Away
New York Rangers (#11 Mark Messier) 2003 Blue Home
Edmonton Oilers (#11 Mark Messier) 2003 Heritage Classic Blue
Tampa Bay Lightning (#10 Gary Roberts) 2009 White Away
Team Canada (#74 Theo Fluery) 2002 White Olympic
Team Canada (#12 Jarome Iginla) 2010 Red Olympic
Vancouver Giants (WHL) 2010 Burgandy
Winnipeg Jets (#19 Jonathan Toews) Replica 1990 - 1996 era Blue Home

The Toews Jets jersey is a bit of a running joke. My buddy wouldn't let me wear my Theo Fluery Blackhawks jersey to a Canucks playoff game that he bought tickets to. I like Toews as a player, and although I live in Vancouver, I'm not a Canucks fan. So I went out and had the Toews Jets jersey made.

I've got no less than eight Detroit Red Wings jerseys - six CCM semi-pro replicas with various patches and either blank or personalized, one 1992 Vladimir Konstantinov throwback, and one Starter black jersey. I also have four Pittsburgh Penguins jersey (1996 third, 2000 third, 2002 white, and a Stall and Dean 1991 black throwback); a Minnesota North Stars 1992 white replica w/anniversary patches; a blank Minnesota Wild white semi-pro; a blank 1992 Ottawa Senators white pro-weight; two blank Detroit Vipers replicas (one white, one eggplant); two NHL All-Star Game replicas (one 1990-93 white blank, one 1994-97 Western Conference blank); and one Nike Michigan Wolverines c.1998 blue replica.

Chris,

I think that my 'Ning thunderstorm jersey is still at my parent's house. It is a replica, not an authentic. What size are you?

Jan 30 · 3:52 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterRandy

Can mine really be called jerseys? I have four replicas (by Pro Player...yeah), home and away from my two favorite teams.

First, I am a fan of the Calgary Flames; have been since I became a fan of sports and hockey. When I was in St. Louis, MO for school, I found these jerseys a some sort of discount store (I can't remember the name of the store). They were replicas of the diagonal striped jerseys they wore from 1995-2000 (when black was first introduced to the team's palette). I like wearing them about now living in the territory of a divisional rival--the Avalanche.

Second, I am a fan of the Tampa Bay Lightning. Tampa is what I consider my hometown, where my career-Army father's family lived. When it was announced that Tampa was getting an NHL club, I was thrilled (and even more so to hear Terry Crisp was hired to coach the team--a Calgary connection). I got these jerseys at the same store I got the Flames jerseys. They were replicas of the design the team wore before Reebok; however, there is a mistake in the logo on both jerseys: the blue arc below the lightning bolt to the word "Lightning" is missing. I used to think that if these weren't Pro Player replicas, that missing arc might make them collectible.

Pre-RBK EDGE blank white Carolina Hurricanes jersey

-Edmonton Oilers (2001 third jersey, blank replica)
-HC CSKA Moscow (mid-1990s, white authentic, two huge eagles on the crest and stars on the bottom) I think I got it when I was in 5th grade
-Russian National Team, Tackla, Mogilny(early '90s, red mesh, blue shoulder yoke, yellow diamonds across the bottom, Могильный)
-Phoenix Coyotes (blank black authentic 1997-98)
-Chicago Blackhawks (blank white replica, signed by the entire 1992 Cup Finals team)

Wow there are some AWESOME jerseys. Here are mine, as a fellow Southwest Florida resident!

1) 1997 Black (Away) Tampa Bay Lightning, customized with #23 Bellows: My first jersey, given to me on my 12th birthday. I had the opportunity to meet Bellows during his tenure with the Lightning, and that experience introduced me to the wonderful sport of hockey. It doesn't fit very well anymore, but I will have it until I leave this Earth.

2) 1997 Tampa Bay Lightning 3rd. Jersey, with the sublimated dye, the rain drops, the grey shoulder yolk, and the hideous bright yellow lightning bolts on the sleeves. Rare, and awesome.

3) 2004 CCM Minnesota North Stars Throwback (White): Because I'm a Brian Bellows fan

4) 1999 Colorado Avalanche Maroon (Away): One of my Aunt's lives in Colorado, and knows I like hockey. Random Christmas present.

5) 1998 Phoenix Coyotes White (home), I love this one, because when the 'Yotes first moved to Phoenix from Winnipeg, I felt that they had the most unique design with its Native American motif. I was saddened to see it replaced with the brick red we know today.

6) 1987 Soviet Union Red Army Practice Sweater (Red, #8, Unidentified name): A present from my Aunt during her business trip to St. Petersburg.

7) 2004 Tampa Bay Lightning White (Away): Hey, we won the cup, have to celebrate somehow. :)

8) 2005 Tampa Bay Lightning Black CCM Practice Jersey: Random present

9) 2007 Florida Everblades White Jersey: The style used just prior to the 10th Anniversary specialty jerseys.

10) 2010 Tampa Bay Lightning Blue "BOLTS" Third Jersey: A Christmas Present from my father, after I finally came to the same conclusion that you did... it's a sharp looking shirt. Love that blue!

11) 2005 Ak Bars Kazan Green Jersey, #39, Richards, written in Russian: A little souvenir a buddy of mine picked up from Moscow when he was on leave, it is authentic and verified, but not "game worn". Circa the NHL Lockout, and of course, Brad Richards was still a Bolt then playing in Kazan. Its a sweet shirt, sublimated dye, bright green and red, everything written in the Cyrillic alphabet.

Disappointing? How's this for disappointing: I finally sprung for a Canucks jersey one summer. The summer right before the Reebok jerseys came out. Could've slapped myself when I realized that I'd bought a jersey that wouldn't be current for even a single game. So now I'm waiting for the next jersey redesign before I buy one again :)

My only other jersey is a Team Canada jersey I bought during All Star Weekend in Denver in 2001. Darren Pang complimented me on it when he saw me in the checkout line with it, and I got it autographed by a bunch of the Canadian women who went on to win gold in Salt Lake City the next year. So that jersey at least makes me proud :)

Jan 30 · 4:42 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterDavid

Chris, ever thought of getting a national team jersey? USA...? I assume you are American? They've had some nice sweaters over the years.
Personally I would say my Canada jerseys are my most treasured.
And i can understand why Chris liked the ducks jersey at the time, i was 7 in 1996 and those third jerseys were the coolest thing I'd ever seen, I liked all of them at the time, except for the kings, I always hated that one. Now I realize none of them were that good. BTW when the lightning came out with the waves jersey, it was by far my favorite, and I still think its an interesting jersey.
My jersey collection is currently at 13 or so and always growing, I'm up for sharing it with Icethetics.

Jan 30 · 4:53 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterBrad

I have a small jersey collection too, but if I ever find that Lightning third, I will let you know.

So jealous about the Wild Wing jersey. The dream is that one, as well as Burger King and the Lightning Storm
