Leafs Announcement & Winter Classic

Couple of news items I wanted to address briefly. Last week I wrote a post about the Maple Leafs' announcement which was made today. Rumors suggested it could be about a new third jersey. Turns out it was just about the team offering free admission to an exhibition game.

Also, the NHL announced today that the Winter Classic will, in fact, take place at Wrigley Field between the Blackhawks and Red Wings. Those rumors had been around a while and it turns out they're true. Just like last year the game will take place on New Year's Day. When a logo is released, I'll post it here at Icethetics.

Now seeing wrigley transformed into a hockey venue will be a sight...I wonder how much they are going to charge for the roof top seats! And the weather could be way more harsh than Buffalo's event. Hopefully the ice crews have several lessons learned to improve upon the condidition of the ice for this year's classic as well.

Should have had the winter classic at "The Big House" in Michigan.

Why a baseball field? There is only a horseshoe stands and no outfield seating...

Bah.

yeah, just free tickets to a game played at the most expensive house in the NHL... just the team trying to give something back to the community - that's way less important than a 3rd jersey...

i know this is a jersey blog, but jeez.

if the bolts made a free game announcement you'd crap yourself.

Ha, I do see your point. I was a little flip about that. My apologies. That's great news for Leafs fans, truly. And believe me, the Lightning have tried to give away tickets before. Still nobody showed up. (But I guess that was pre-Stanley Cup days.)

Fair enough. No need to apologize. We Leaf fans just get testy for no reason... probably something about not having a cup for 40+ years.

I wonder if the Blackhawks and Red Wings will be wearing vintage jerseys during the winter classic like the Sabres and Penguins did last year.

Jason New Era: there is outfield seating...there has been for years in all major league fields. with all due respect, what baseball fields have you been looking at?

i see this outdoor game going over well with the league and people of chicago. granted, most of the city will be caring more about the Bears and how they're doing, but if the Hawks get off to a hot start then more attention might be gained.

ill be at the game. i was at the one last year which rocked, this one shouldnt be much different.

Why a baseball field? All the seats are going to be at weird angles to the ice. At least with a football stadium everything is parallel to the rink.
