Hurricanes Put Flag On Ice

Seems like the Carolina Hurricanes have been dominating the news coverage here lately. Anyway, it looks like RBC Center crews are in the process of painting the ice with a new logo.

Check this out.

An image grabbed from the arena's webcam shows that the secondary logo will now be front and center. The logo — which depicts a tropical storm flag tied to a hockey stick and waving in the wind — has long been rumored to be on the front of the team's new third jersey which will be unveiled on Wednesday at this very arena.

For the record, last year the Hurricanes' 10th anniversary logo donned center ice. Before that it was the standard primary logo.

Thanks to Scott for the tip and link.

I always liked that logo... I can't wait to see the third jersey!

Sweet! I've always thought that was the better logo. Another thing to note: last year they started using the hurricane flags (same as along the bottom of their jerseys) as the red line.

I think it looks pretty sweet, I'm down with it.

Looking good!

I wonder if this could be a sign. We've seen the Blue Jackets do it, maybe the Hurricanes will follow suit and switch their secondary logo with the primary. and going further with this, Maybe that dark Hurricanes logo you posted the other day could be on a third jersey someday. Just a thought...I have some ideas on how the jersey would work.

Doesn't it bother anyone else that the flag logo is for a tropical storm, not for a hurricane? If they hadn't won that one Cup, I'd wonder if the logo was keeping them from gaining enough strength to do well...

The flag is a hurricane flag by definition. However, one hurricane flag indicates a tropical storm or a category 1 hurricane. 2 indicates category 2, and so on up to 5. 5 would look pretty cluttered on a logo.

Anyway, there are a lot on the bottom of the jersey. I'll count for you... 19 on a size M CCM replica (probably a common size on the Hurricanes Roster)
So each hurricanes jersey has 21 flags (2 shoulder logos) Multiply by 6 players, 126 flags, plus one on the ice. 127 Hurricane flags.

I'd say it's a common enough element that they don't need to ruin a great logo to include another flag...

All right, just to clear things up, http://www.crwflags.com/FOTW/FLAGS/us-storm.html" REL="nofollow">click here.

A square red flag with a black square in the center is a storm flag. Flying one (done by the Coast Guard when necessary) signifies 55-73 mph winds. By definition, that's a tropical storm. Two flags signify winds above 74 mph. By definition, a hurricane — regardless of the category.

I've lived in Florida my whole life and been through enough storms to know the difference. Just didn't want to leave that misinformation out there but I also didn't want to delete the comment.

Honestly, I actually knew that, but I've heard that stupid comment so many times that I just wanted to say something to get people to stop. It's been said, and it's not changing anything. Don't like it? Try and make a logo with two flags. It doesn't work. Is the orca on Vancouver's jerseys anatomically correct? No, but we all know what it's referring to. Does a real lightning bolt look like the Lightning logo? No, it's much thinner and doens't actually taper. But do we know what it is? Is the leafs logo shaped like a real maple leaf?

I just figured people would be happier if they thought it was right and would shut up about it.

wikipedia could be wrong, but it indicates that one flag is a hurricane watch..

And NASA offers up this handy graphic:

One flag is always a storm. Two flags is always a hurricane. The black square in the middle signifies warning, while a red field by itself signifies a watch. Grew up in hurricane country, too, and have always found it odd they don't use a hurricane warning flag. I think two would look better than one by itself.

Look at a few here: http://forums.carolinahurricanes.com/index.php?showtopic=14723&st=55

two flags on that logo looks really awkward. Not unworkable, but not nearly as good.
