Info On Habs' Retro Jerseys
An article at Cyberpresse.ca which happens to be in French has some interesting information regarding the the vintage jerseys the Montreal Canadiens are rumored to be wearing this season to celebrate their centennial.
I used Google to translate it to English.
Retro Jerseys
In addition, the Canadian will take advantage of the centennial celebrations for dusting four of his old sweaters. This season, the Montreal players will don jerseys retro twice, once on November 15 against the Philadelphia Flyers and a second time on 1 February against the Boston Bruins.
In the first case, it is the jersey of the 1915-16 season to be worn by the Canadian players. The second time, Montrealers will skate wearing the jersey of the 1912-13 season.
Apart from the terrible grammar of the translator, there's some interesting stuff here.
While it appears to suggest the Habs will wear four "old sweaters," it suggests only two dates when they will be worn. Unless the Canadiens are planning on a wardrobe change for each of those games, I think we might need some clarification.
But it sounds like they're at least wearing the 1915-16 sweaters against the Flyers on November 15 and the 1912-13 sweaters against the Bruins on February 1. If someone would like to track down pictures of those jerseys, I'd be happy to post them. A quick Google search turned up nothing useful for me.
UPDATE (3:04 PM): Thanks to Alan for finding an image showing the Montreal Canadiens' uniform history. In the upper left corner are the jerseys we might be seeing on the ice this season.
The 1915-16 sweater is clearly labeled but we have to assume the sweater labeled 1911-12 is what they mean by 1912-13 in the article. Both very interesting jerseys.
Now do you they'll actually wear "sweaters" in those games or adapt these styles to a Rbk EDGE jersey? (Just a joke.)

This site has pictures of all the jerseys over the nhl's history.
Wearing sweaters would be really sweet... Sizing over pads, effort for one game and Reebok's presence make that an impossible dream though.
Just curious about why my comment was deleted! It hardly seemed controversial.

I've said before that I delete comments with irrelevant links to other web sites or links to message boards. Sorry if that bothers you but it's well within my rights to get rid of any content I don't like.
Wow, Chris. Your popularity was built upon other web sites and message boards posting your link. Still is, in fact.
wade, I'm sure that if chris saw that the comment was relevant and had a small link at the end he would leave it but blatant advertising is just begging to get it deleted. Keep up the good work chris.

Here is a photo from a blog which depicts the 1912-13 Montreal Canadiens in uniforms similar to the 1911-12 uniforms in the picture above that Allan found. Reading further down in the article, it talks about Montreal having "new barber pole coloured sweaters" for the 1912-13 season. This would leave us to believe that the picture posted above is erroneous in its date of the same jersey.
It's going to look as sorry as the MLB does doing their throwback nights - You get sloppy worn old style jerseys with this years batting helmets and sox...LAME!!!
Well, the players won't go helmetless and they won't go back to leather pants, but I suspect They'll at least use the right socks.
Hockey is a little different in that you have to wear socks, and wear a helmet all the time, which is just a plain color without any logo. throwbacks in hockey can look pretty good, just look at the Winter classic. Or Vancouver's retro uniform from 2 years ago. Or Buffalo's from 2006.
Besides- it's the Habs in their 100th anniversary year. They'll make it look good, it's a matter of pride for them.
You're right: the "1911-12" sweater is actually 1912-13. 1911-12 is a seldom-seen, little-known design with http://wwwrealitycheckeyesontheprize.blogspot.com/2008/08/1911-12-newsy-goes-west.html" REL="nofollow">diagonal striping.
As for the "wardrobe change," it wouldn't be the first time. When the team retires a jersey, all of the Canadiens players wear the number during the warm-ups, before changing into the actual game jersey for the 60 minutes.
This may be what they're doing. One jersey for warm-ups; one for the game itself.
Nice find Doogie2K. I missed that one. I wonder why that one is not depicted in Alan's found photo?
