Team Canada Needs A New Logo

The International Olympic Committee doesn't allow national sports federation logos from team uniforms at the Olympics but now they're getting down to business and enforcing the rule. This means Team Canada won't be able to use this symbol in 2010 in Vancouver.

If you'd like to read more, TSN.ca has more details.

This has led numerous people to email in suggesting that we hold our own contest here at Icethetics to design a new logo for Team Canada — and by extention, other countries around the world. However, this isn't really a factor for most other countries.

It sounds to me like the IOC is trying to reduce the commercial element from what was originally meant to be an event featuring amateur athletes. Corporate sponsorship is one thing, but branding a national team doesn't really make a whole lot of sense.

Still, I'm up for it. If you guys want to create new logos and uniforms for Team Canada, Team USA, even Team Lithuania, I'll set up a page to display them (I can do that with a web site now, you see).

"What wrong with useing this logo from the Black Jerseys?

That is a good look, espeacially if you change the typo to something better.

that logo represents the work that canadians put into their hockey programs...as long as we get it in other tournaments its okay

This really is disappointing,

first off, to all the people who keep saying that this is a corporate logo, you are out of your frigging minds, this isn't a corporate logo its the prideful symbol of hockey for all canadians, and to try and say otherwise is just preposterous, its not like its some corporate logo being shoved down canadian's throats, indeed it helps to pay for what is and will continue to be an extremely expensive sport to participate in.

on top of that, to say that it isn't iconic because it hasn't been around long enough is just stupid, what logo was team canada wearing in 2002 when we won our first gold medal in 50 years? i rest my case. Events are what make things iconic, not necessarily time of use, furthermore its not like its some brand that is reserved for only the top tier teams, every time I played on in minor hockey had this as a patch, or spot on our jersey where this logo was, its as ubiquitous as the little stop logos on the backs of the jerseys. For me this logo simply symbolizes hockey in Canada, not just because I grew up watching it, and playing with it, but because it represents some of the greatest events in Canadian hockey history (and conversely some of the worst) it has real and true heartfelt emotion and history tied to it, and I cannot see any reason why Canadians wouldn't be allowed to represent ourselves, I mean if were going to do this we might as well remove another very, very corporate logo from Olympic usage, how bout we get rid of those stupid rings?

Also, as to why people are hesitant to use those logos from the black jerseys, team canada had those to start the '02 olympics, and wore them with the red jerseys to start the first game against sweden, after losing 5-2, they switched back to the old jerseys overnight, and stopped using it for the rest of those olympics, some people see it as unlucky

once again i'll explain that this will continue to be our logo we just can't wear it at the olympics. the international ice hockey federation has no problems with our logo it's the ioc's rule. we'll have our normal jersey's for all the world championships which makes this even more stupid. people aren't likely going to buy a one off jersey which doesn't include the hockey canada logo and that's the other part of this they don't like, with the olympics here in canada they figured they sell a tonne of sweaters which as mentioned before goes to subsidizing some of the cost for minor hockey in this country. so if we have to change i say we use our vintage winnipeg falcons jersey from the world cup or at least that logo.

The sad thing is it seems the COC is not defending the old logo because they want to put their logo on the Team Canada jerseys, and therefore take a portion of the jersey/tshirt/etc sales..
So it comes down to the COC taking money away from Hockey Canada to put for their own purposes.

The COC went to bat for Alpine Canada, because the race suits are expensive and because there is a miniscule proportion of revenue able to be generated from Apline Canada merch sales. Basically it wasnt plum enough to consider taking.

Most other countries follow the International tradition of wearing the National coat of arms on their jerseys.

Swedens 3 crowns are not a federation logo, but are derived from the simplified version of Sweden's Royal coat of Arms.

For the USA, that would be the Eagle and Shield featured inside the presidentiel seal.

Canada's coat of arms is rather complex.

But they could follow Sweden's idea and use the twig with 3 maple leaves featured in the base of the shield

i never liked that damn logo anyhow. I would love for my Canadians to lose the black on the uniform and go back to a straight maple leaf.

I know it has been mentioned before but how about putting the alternate logo (the vintage on that was used on the front of the black alternate jerseys) on the front and move the hockey canada logo on the shoulders (which from my knowledge their allowed to do), otherwise if they can make a sharp version of the 72 jersey that would be pretty cool
