Coyotes Show Off Concepts
A day after Icethetics launched its Concepts page, the Phoenix Coyotes are showing off some jersey concepts of their own. In an article on the team's web site discussing the development of their new third jersey, a photo gallery is featured displaying some of the options they considered before settling on the final version.
The Coyotes are the only teams in the league to release developmental jersey concepts. And I, for one, am mighty impressed. You can see the full gallery by clicking here. I also found a few worth mentioning. Of the seven posted, these two I liked most.
Adding the desert scene behind the leaping coyote adds a new dimension to the front of the jersey without recalling the previous desert-scene third jersey. The concept on the right is a little dull perhaps, but I think would've fit perfectly with the classic feel of the Coyotes' home/road jersey set.
Now for a couple I didn't like so much.
On the left, great logo but terrible for the front of a jersey! We learned that from the Ducks. And the seated coyote on the right does absolutely nothing. At least the version they went with shows the coyote actually doing something — even if he is just skipping.
Huge thanks to Jeff for pointing out this article and concept gallery!
By the way, the Coyotes were one of three teams to debut their third jersey last Friday. I didn't get a chance to mention it but I'll go ahead and post some pictures now.
I'm still not a huge fan though the brick helmet and black jersey is certainly a unique combination.
Probably not a wise choice to go with the overlapping numbers on the sleeves of the Flyers jersey, but I do like the return to orange. I saw them wear it tonight against the Lightning. As for the Bruins, there's barely a difference between this and their home sweater. I'll say it again — missed opportunity.
This might explain why I failed to mention the debut of these jerseys on Friday night. I guess they left me a little underwhelmed — which is strange for me. Anyway, there it is. All 18 jerseys have been unveiled and all 18 have debuted.

i dont mind overlapping numbers, they have a black border on them. they sure didnt stop mike richards from puttin the puck in the net =D
those phoenix concepts are pretty interesting too, that first one looks really neat
i just realized that the captains "C" on the phoenix jersey is on the right side of the jersey like detroit because the logo and rbk edge design doenst leave enough room to ahve it on the left
Yes, out of the 4 Coyotes pictured, the first one is by far the best. They should've went with that instead of the bland one they selected. Putting the desert scene behind it does wonders.
2nd one is basic,3rd one - please! No more words on jersey fronts. And the last one looks weird with the coyote sitting.
As I've stated..... the Flyers nailed it with this retro 70's look. No mistakes at all. Keep it now.
The overlapping numbers are just a tribute to how they looked in the early 70s through the early 80s.
For me, it's like going back to my childhood, watching games at the Spectrum with my dad.
I never liked it when the Flyers morphed from a true orange sweater to one that had more of a red hue to it.
The first concept jersey is very nice!
The Coyotes missed a golden...or in their case, a sand coloured opportunity when they rejected the Leaping Coyote with the desert scene behind it. I wonder what possessed them not to use it?
The only thing that really bothers me about the Flyers jersey is looking at the white stripe on the arm from the angle that photo was taken.
And thinking about teams that have shown their concept thirds, Don't forget that the Bruins showed their concepts on the NESN broadcast in February, Though it was only two jerseys that were almost the same.
Didn't notice that the Coyotes' script was on the pant leg until I read the article from the team website. A nice article.
Many people don't realize all the work that goes into making a jersey. It isn't just a one week process. For the Kings, because the purple on their uniforms appears blue/indigo on television, that was something that had to be considered. They have to look at all sorts of aspects, such as how the jerseys look from all angles from everywhere in the building. They have to make sure the jerseys look good to everybody sitting everywhere, whether it's behind the goal, in the nosebleed sections, or from their couch or at a bar.
If the 'Yotes went with the paw print shoulder patch instead of the "P" or baseball looking patch on the first concept jersey, it would be more aesthetically appeasing.
While I am generally against the idea of wordmarks as crests, the Phoenix script was pretty inventive, with the subtle cactus in the P. I think perhaps the coyote leaping in front of the desert scene was a touch too busy, but that's all right for a third jersey. I don't know why they nixed it. Maybe they're keeping the option open to use the black third as their future home jersey.
The Coyotes really should have gone with the desert scene with the coyote on it. I have to disagree with the comment that the bruins jerseys were bad because on the ice during the game they looked amazing. Plus 2 wins with those on.
I am sure glad you weren't the one designing the Bruins jersey. Those things look AWESOME on the ice and there isn't a single Bruins fan i know that doesn't like the jersey. I can understand how it looked underwhelming off the ice but watching them play in them was awesome.
You like color WAY to much.
Wow, I'm really impressed that the actual team posted concepts for their fans. It kind of relieves some built up tension that they probably had. If only the sharks did something like this so I wouldn't have lost sleep a couple nights before. But overall, these concepts are nicely done and they look awesome, they all could be potential third jersey they way they were designed. The only thing I don't like is the black; it seems every team in the league is conforming! Oh well, it'll turn out good in the end
I am a huge fan of the flyers and bruins 3rd. They may not be the most original style and concept, but they transcend time. I love the white nameplate on the flyers jersey and the Bruins jersey to me, just look great on ice.
As for the 'Yotes. I think it is great that they posted these jerseys for fans. I am sure it will allow them to gather feedback and use that information for jersey designs in the future.... hopefully near future because their jersey now is just terrible. I really like the 2nd version that Chris has posted and it makes me wonder if they did not choose this style because it is a similar design to that of the blues.
Makes you wonder what other teams did in terms of concepts. Hopefully they will follow suit. I can certainly bet that the leafs had no other designs.
One last note, it makes me laugh when players match their sticks to their team colors. Apparently they care what they look like on the ice.. what's next? Matching skate colors?!
Its odd, I feel the exact opposite about the overlap of the number of the Flyers' arms. I think the jersey almost looks off without the slight overlap. Its certain and interesting aesthetic choice and I doubt its something that could be replicated. We like things that are no easily replicated!
I wonder how long an article about the development of the Stars third jersey would be... One, maybe two sentences?
Anyway, I like the return to orange for the Flyers, too. It is nice to have a different color jersey to watch instead of a bunch of white, black, blue, and red jerseys.
Also, I wish the Bruins would have made their new third a bit different. It would have looked at lot better with some slight modifications (mostly a tie-up).
the flyers should have went with a white outline around the black on the sleeve numbers...that way the numbers would still look orange with a black outline on the white...but would have a white space between the orange and the number...that would give the number some definition and separation from the orange
would look something like this...gives it a little more of a modern feel too
F-'in Chris. You haven't done any major updates recently, I see this on the 'Yotes website, and get ready to e-mail you all the info. As soon as I come here, you're already two steps in front of me. Touche, sneaky dude.
insert 'I am berry berry sneaky, sir" comment from Mr. Deeds
Gosa - I was kinda thinking the same thing. The black outline blends in too much with the orange. The white added gives it a finishing (and clearer) touch. Now go email the Flyers!
chris the overlapping numbers is what they had with the origional jersey and they wanted it to look exactly like it use to. and you said earliar on the rankings they need laces if there gonna have a throwback but that jersey never had laces in the first place.
Holy cow. Does Phoenix ever have an amazing design team or what? Whether you like the colours of the helmets, pants, gloves. etc. or not, you've got to admit that they can sure make a logo. Each and every one of those logos would have been a great fit for the other logos. It makes you wonder what could have been. The background scene certainly makes for a better logo. I think the logo they chose is just too small and doesn't have that hockey "size". Hockey logos, more often than not, have a certain shape to them so that you can draw a circle or oval around it and it fits nicely. However, the logo Phoenix chose is just too oblong.
They should have done what Minnesota did, with the fan questionnaire, including pictures of the possibilities. I think it's almost certain that there would have been a different result in choice.
That first concept is great, I really wonder why it was rejected for a much blander logo? The background just seems to complete the jersey and it really is a huge shame that the Coyotes management did not go with this logo....
The first concept is clearly the best. However, as I am totally sick of black jerseys, it would be even better if the jersey was Red.
coyotes would look awesome with a black helmet
philly looks good, same with boston
just wondering about nhl09 with the third jerseys now...is there a code now?
Andrew - I've been watching like a hawk for any info on NHL09, and I've found a link on the EASportsWorld forums where an EA moderator posted some info. The info was extremely vague ( meaning no actual release date was given for the 3rd jersey code), but there was an explaination that the date would be "sometime in December". The main thing this moderator implied on was that the NHL, RBK, and EA have some sort of legally binding agreement on the release date.
My best guess is so RBK and the NHL don't rip their eyeballs out due to 'leaks', like last year.
My opinion: Dear RBK - Staggered release dates are f***ing lame. I can understand releasing them within a month or two of each other BEFORE THE SEASON STARTS. This end of November crap is ridiculous.
ok...i was getting worried because i heard nothing about it for a while. can't wait to get them in my game. i agree though...the staggered thing was stupid. should have all been released at the beginning of the season - might have been alright staggered if it was all before the season
Way to pick the worst design you had available to you, Phoenix! I like all of the other options better than what they went with.
I rather the flyers used a reddish tint in the jerseys like the mid 70's. I also see they kept the overlapping numbers on the sleeves (like they did for many seasons in the 70's). This third is styled after the 1973-74 season. It's the only season they wore the white name plates. Teams didn't wear name plates back then but NBC started televising games and required/suggested teams to wear them during their broadcasts (Sunday was the game of the week). Apparently the Flyers already had name plates made for their home games and just used those same ones for the road jerseys when required.
It's interesting to note that the last time the Flyers used those Jerseys with the white name plates was playoff game four of a sweep of the Atlanta Flames. They went on to win the stanley cup but never wore those name plates again.
Anyway, they did a good job of staying true to that uniform, sans the pumpkin orange color and Durene fabric :)
I wish they would go back to the older logo though. It had a smaller circle so the white boarder stood out more.
The 'yotes jersey is really starting to grow on me...
My god, that first concept is amazing.
