Freak Out Friday XLIV
The first legitimate Freak Out Friday in nearly three months isn't even getting posted on a Friday. But I promised you guys I'd have something, so rather than waiting a week, here it is.
Obviously I have to start with something that was printed in the Vancouver Sun around the time of the Canucks' third jersey release. The newspaper asked kids to create an alternate jersey for their Canucks — and wait until you see them.
I don't mean to make fun of the kids so much as those of you that like to belittle professional artwork that isn't to your particular taste by saying it looks like a 5-year-old made it. These were made by 8- and 10-year-olds. Yeah.
But since we're on the subject, you guys like any of these for a future alternate or one-off sweater?
Only got a few more items tonight. The Icethetics cup doesn't exactly runneth over in quality Freak Out art these days, despite the public outcry for it.
I like this one, particularly because I've always been a fan of that king head logo. As much as he may look like the creepy Burger King mascot, I just feel like it's the next best representation of a team called the Kings.
Second obviously to a crown. That pretty much goes without saying.
The fact that it's on a playing card — I'm surprised something like this hasn't shown up in my inbox sooner. But this is quality work nevertheless.
I even think we could've gone with all the extra colors you see on an actual card. And throw a few suits in there for good measure.
But let's move on. The Pittsburgh Penguins are the next topic of discussion.
Sometimes a revamped logo works. Sometimes, well, I'm not one to make generalizations about the sexual preferences of penguins — but this one is so gay.
He's got the little scarf, the small but toned muscular arms, puffed up chest and absurdly skinny waist. He's even got that look like he knows I'm talking about him and doesn't like it one bit.
No disrespect to the designer or anything, of course. Just some random observations.
The last two things I have for you are photographs. One you'll quickly notice is doctored to prove a point. The other you'll wish was.
Ever get the feeling the Thrashers' third jersey looks out of place on the ice? Wonder where it belongs? Wonder no more.
I've never seen that sweater look more at home.
And finally, Sens fans, there may well be something you didn't know about Anton Volchenkov and Jason Spezza.
I think Volchenkov's face pretty much says it all.
And I'll leave you with that tonight. That visual. Try to sleep now, suckers.

Bahaha insult to injury for the Sens this year.
Those Canucks kids jerseys are awesome!
Anyone have the link to the online ones that were mentioned in the article.
hahah yea def. sweet post chris, love the penguin observations
From the concepts, Hartly Witten's jersey is actually pretty cool and would look great in reality.
I should try coming up with some FOF stuff, my regular concepts suck enough as it is so it should be easy.
This is great. I'm especially a fan of that 'Nucks third that's um, let's see, far left row second from top. Wow. That's the time of thing that causes psychedelic nightmares. I mean, not only does not one of them look good, none even look like a hockey sweater. Still, I appreciate the effort, and see some good Reebok designers on the way. Do you think the guy who designed the Thrashers' third designed the red Canucks third? As for that Kings, I actually like it. Not as a real logo or anything, but definitely quite creative. Nice to see FOF back! Or, should I say, FOS.
it's obvious the vancouver youth have no knowledge of jerseys before the edge era as almost all the jerseys have the nhl crest on the front
Volchie is my favourite player, but i found that funny. i think someone could shorten the arms on the Trashers jersey and put it on a football or Basketball player. just a thought.
Mark, what? NHL jerseys have had logos on the front for ages. That's not a new edge thing. In fact, with the Edge came more teams using text. (Okay, from one to two not counting thirds)
As for concepts I like, the giant VC is cool. It actually ties in with their history, and is quite different in a new and original way without being crap.
jeff...he means the nhl crest at the bottom of the collar...the actual nhl crest, not the team's logos
and as for that spezza volchenkov pic...might explain why the sens are doing so bad
I want some cards like that kings one. The Joker could have Bettman on the front =}. Also, that analysis of the Penguin was bang on. Great to see you posting again, you definitely deserved the break, considering you work harder than me and i got 2 weeks off.
Those Canucks jerseys are pretty much awful, but chances are i wouldn't do too much better.
That Thrashers thing, just awesome, wow, it finally found a home.
Overall, a good batch of freaky.
You creepy Senators picture can't hurt me! Not after watching the Preds trounce Chicago,, Sully skating onto the ice in uniforms, and getting a flat tire and driving from Nashville to Chattanooga at 55 on a donut!
I agree with Jeff. The blue VC under the picture actually looks like a rather legit logo. I'd be interested in seeing that put onto a format by one of the people here that's good at stuff like that, and get a closer look. But the design is simple and vaguely classic (think Flying V). Maybe get rid of those shoulder yokes, and I think it'd be a nifty sweater.
Speaking as a Thrasher's fan, that's exactly where that 3rd should be.
if someone wanted to revamp a logo with a penguin with a scarf, they should have 1st looked at pittsburgh's logo for their first season (logo wasn't used on official jerseys). my dad once had a replica with that original logo though. if want to find this logo just google 'pittsburgh penguins logo history' and look at the 2nd one down.
as far as the penguin pictured here, your observations are spot on.
The Thrashers jersey is exactly where it belongs.
Looking at the kids' Canucks jerseys, I really liked the black jersey in the bottom right. There were a few black alternate jerseys, and I think the Canucks could pull off the black jersey as well.
Seeing as how many times the Canucks have changed jerseys, it wouldn't surprise me in the least to see them go with a 5yr old'd concept. I mean, we've all seen the Star Trek V's right?
That Pens logo looks 'grim reaper-ish' the way he's holding that hatchet!
Yes, the Thrashers, and many other 3rd's I'm afraid, have found their calling in motocross, skateboarding, and arena ball. And as for the Sens goofy antics, whatever turns you on, boys!
And the Kings would look great on an nhl deck of cards. But that's it.
I laughed at the Thrasher jersey "being right at home". Good effort by the kids on designing Canucks jerseys, although I don't think their art teacher is going to do them any favours! That Penguin is.... creepy.
