Rangers To Honor Graves

On February 3, the New York Rangers will send No. 9 up to the rafters in honor of Adam Graves. That in and of itself would be a legitimate Icethetics topic. But what I want to talk about is the incredibly cool online photo mosaic tribute to Graves.

Rangers fans can upload photos to the web site and they become part of the wall. How cool is that?

In unrelated news, I'm curious how Canucks fans are enjoying seeing Mats Sundin in blue and green.

I guess when Sundin wears blue and green he thinks he has to take late third period penelties that cost his team the game.. but other than that he looks good haha

Another number retirement is coming up soon: Glenn Anderson's #9 in Edmonton on Sunday. http://oilers.nhl.com/team/app/?service=page&page=NewsPage&articleid=403609

I'm not a Canucks fan, I'm a Leafs fan. Sundin looks a little hypocritical in blue and green. I don't even want him in blue and white. Hope he enjoys his barrels of money while being a rental player for Vancouver! That's weird! I thought he didn't want to be a rental player and I thought it was never about the money? I hope he pulls a groin when the Canucks come visit Toronto in February!

HockeyLister, just because the leafs suck doesn't mean you have to insult the canucks. Sundin looks great in blue and green, better then he ever was as a leaf!

Connor Abbott, are you kidding me? "Better than he ever was as a leaf!"? I love Mats and he'll always be my favorite player, and I truly believe that the money wasn't the reason he went to Vancouver. He didn't ask Mike Gillis to give him such a fat contract. He played for half of that in Toronto and obviously didn't have a problem with that.

And I hope the Canucks suck this year, I'm just being honest. I've never liked them but I seriously don't like them for seeing so many fans rip apart Mats and then when he scores his first goal he gets a 5 minute Standing O.

Mats is a great player. He could care less about the Canucks and their money. All he wants and deserves is a cup. For such a great career, it would be wrong to see it any other way. He saw Luongo and the Sedin Sisters and decided it was a better fit than Henrik the King and the all-star lineup in New York.

I don't want to see Mats win just because I know it'll be awkward and wrong. However, I hope he finds the back of the net often in Vancouver. Just no playoffs.

Once a Leaf always a Leaf. He could care less about Vancouver. And everyone knows it's true.

thats a leaf fan for you always thinking that everyone cares about the leafs more then any other team. Obvious Mats cared enough about the Canucks to sign with them
If he truly cared about the leafs he would have realized that the best option for the leafs was for him to waive his no-trade clause back in march so the leafs could have got Jeff Carter or someone else just as talented then just resign with them in the summer but then again obvious any one who works or plays for the leafs aint that smart anyways John Ferguson anyone

Glen Wesley's number goes up Feb. 17 in Carolina. Against the Bruins.

sigh The Canucks are 1 - 3 with Sundin the in lineup. Money well spent huh? As a Canuck fan, all I can think of is the comment another hockey fan said when Sundin was signed.. "It's pretty pathetic when you ask a Toronto Maple Leaf to help you win"

The Rangers will also retire Andy Bathgate's #9 and Harry Howell's #3 later that month on February 22nd vs the Toronto Maple Leafs

Jan 14 · 9:41 AM PST | Registered Commenterrangersrock28

are the rangers a bit retire-happy? I like the practice, but now that the Habs have so many retired, the rangers refuse to be left behind, eh?

Jan 14 · 12:34 PM PST | Registered CommenterJohn Baranowski

Boston also used to be retire-happy. They only have one single digit number available to be worn...#6. The amount of retired numbers in Montreal is ridiculous also!

"the best option for the leafs was for him to waive his no-trade clause back in march so the leafs could have got Jeff Carter..."

The Flyers would have NEVER traded Carter for Sundin. Bob Clarke is gone, and so are the days of trading good young talent for over the hill players.

nogoodbye, i feel for you man. At least our canucks are getting back luongo on thursday! david montelpare, i agree with everything you just said. And leafers, "Henrik the King" could possibly stop creating chances for the other teams. I don't see luongo see him clearing it in front of his own net. GO CANUCKS GO!

Jan 14 · 6:08 PM PST | Registered CommenterConnor Abbott

Hockeylister, just because the Habs have so much history doesn't mean you have to say there retired numbers are ridiculous. Although they do retire a bit to many numbers. The Canucks have only retired two players numbers, Stan "the steamer" Smyl, and Trev Linden's #16. GO CANUCKS GO!

At the trade deadline last year Sundin was not going to be traded for Carter.
The leafs had two deals in place, one with Sundin going to Montreal and the other was Kaberle going to Philly. It came down to these players waiving their no-trade clause. They obviously said no. Here were the trades:

To Montreal:
Mats Sundin
To Toronto:
Chris Higgins, Mikael Grobovski, and a 1st round draft pick

To Philly:
Thomas Kaberle
To Toronto:
Jeff Carter and a 1st round draft pick

Cliff Fletcher almost worked some magic for the leafs, but John Ferguson Jr. most definately screwed that up with all the no-trade clauses. As a Leaf fan i could only imagine what we would be doing this year if Sundin and Kaberle accepted :(.

"it's gonna take some time for him" yeah yeah, I've heard that a hundred times. And that is why there is a pre-season and the season starts in OCTOBER, not January. I just think that money could have been better spent elsewhere. IMO

Jan 14 · 9:32 PM PST | Registered Commenternogoodbye

When all is said and done, the Rangers will have sent 8 numbers to the rafters. Starting in 03-04 (Richter), the Rangers will have retired 5 numbers in 4 seasons (Remember the lockout). I am for all these retirements and I want to see one more go up before they take a break (Brad Park's #2)

"And leafers, 'Henrik the King' could possibly stop creating chances for the other teams. I don't see luongo see him clearing it in front of his own net."

You know, there's a very good possibility that that's because he's been injured for the past 2 months. And you're telling me that not every goalie makes stupid plays? Every goalie, yes, even your precious Luongo, has made horrible and embarrassing mistakes.

Lundqvist and Nabokov are the most underrated goalies in the league. I was just standing up for the runner-up. Don't attack me just because I like Lundqvist better than Luongo.

And I was thinking. Anyone ever notice that all those stars of past teams that Toronto gets turns into a nothing? And how occasionally former Leafs are successful when they leave? Well, Mats was clearly good in Toronto. So maybe it's like a mini curse on Mats now. Just a thought. Other Leafs fans will know what I'm talking about.

thanks jason for mentioning the glenn anderson retirement which it self has a pretty sweet graphic logo

yeah i agree w/ link. as for foppa....rumors are he wants to come to philly this year. him and paul holmgren are golfing pals and all. i mean he'll be with gagne who he has said is one of the biggest reasons why he went there originally..not to mention the contract he got lol. but i think philly will be in a better playoff position than the avs. but who knows....we heard the same talk last year before the trade deadline

Jan 15 · 8:27 PM PST | Registered CommenterNick Farkas

I have been trying desperately to look in the bright side. Although, when the team is 1 - 4 with him in the lineup and all he does is take stupid penalties, which seem to lead to timely goals for the opposition, there doesn't seem to be much of a bright side.

Jan 17 · 9:34 AM PST | Registered Commenternogoodbye

Nick Frakas, I agree. nogoodbye, i feel for ya. and leafers...my new years resolution is to be nicer to leafs fans, so i won't argue.
