Concept Art: The Awaited Return
Tuesday · Jun 23 · 2009 | 10:52 AM PDTI wish I had more for you guys lately. There's not been much to report as far as news. A few bits of concept art have trickled in here and there so I thought I'd take some time to share some.
Untvar sends in this Maple Leafs re-imagining, saying "If Burke is able to turn the Leafs around, they might need an upgrade to their uni. I tried to think of something that would update their traditional look, but keeping in mind that they WANT it to be simple."

From Kevin (aka Koho) comes a new Lonestar-based look for the Dallas Stars.

Certainly reminiscent of the old days of hockey and I wouldn't be surprised if a 1960s era club called the Texas Lone Stars had worn something just like it.
Kevin writes, "I think [the Stars] should've changed to [this] when they moved from Minnesota to Texas. Being that Texas is the Lone Star state I think that they should've rebranded themselves from the Minnesota North Stars to the Dallas/Texas Lone Stars after the move. I used an old police badge shaped like a star with the Texas flag inside as the logo and slightly based the jersey off of the retro Oilers third jersey."

Hope that holds you guys over for a little while. I hate saying "I'm back" and then going so long without a post. I'm doing my best to get some legitimate information with regard to the new crop of third jerseys for 2009-10. At the moment, I don't really have anything new. But keep checking back, it'll be right here when I do.
And as always, feel free to get in touch with any suggestions, comments, ideas, questions or criticisms you may have. I may not necessarily reply to them all, but I'll at least give them a ready. It's icethetics@gmail.com.

The leafs ones are okay, but i still think they need some sort of striping across the bottom.
A post, sweet. I agree with OilerLuver, the Leafs jerseys need something on the bottom. Also, I'm not really a fan of that logo.
I like those Dallas jerseys. The colours seem a little to 70s but overall they're pretty good. And the Lone Stars would have been a far better name, I'd never even thought of that before.
Replace that logo with the infamous design from Sean Cox, and we've got a winner
I'm not sure if the Leafs need a new look. I've always disliked that wordmark though...
I love the Dallas concept with the star and flag, but are there too many red/white/blue coloured teams in the NHL?
I'm not sure I like brown as a jersey colour for Edmonton. I like the logo though, maybe replacing it with orange can work?
I like the Sens jersey minus the Hurricane-esque squares at the bottom.
The vertical piping on the Leafs mockups are nasty.
Was starting to get worried we wouldn't see action for another week.
Time to do something I haven't done for months...
Toronto: Nice logo, the jersey needs a bit of work though. A revised TML might work better with it.
Dallas: I see what you mean by the 1960s feel. Good logo again, similar to the Colorado Rockies in many ways. The Jersey looks like a Blackhawks jersey turned patriotic, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Though I think if the team existed, it would have relocated or changed their jersey by now.
Oilers: If the Oilers were committed to not using the old Gretzky days the least they would have to do is mimic their royal blue and orange jerseys using navy blue and orange. This concept is a perfect example of what I want to see. The logo is good for the most part, but I would update the regular blue "Oilers" script instead of using the alternative script logo.
Senators: Nice work, though I would rework the Hurricanes-style waist stripe. Maybe instead of black between the yellow stripes, just make it completely yellow. Nothing else to complain about. Though people might confuse them with the Florida Panters.
That Sens jersey is really on the right track...I would take the shoulder yoke and add some scroll designs and more gold to it. On any other jersey it would look goofy, but as it stands now the yoke is a bit disconnected from the rest of the design.
The Texas idea is amazing, except I agree with Dan, we need an escape from blue and red!
Well, the Dallas one isn't that bad, but it would reduce us to only 1 team in green.
The Leaf logo is untouchable, and should never be replaced. Also the striping pattern is horrible.
As for the Sens jersey, it isn't bad, I like their logo set with the trojan. I'm not very fond of using "gold" (yellow) on the jersey either.
And I agree with everyone else that the Carolina Hurricanes-esque squares are unecessary.
Toronto jersey b is better than a. The vertical stripes aren't to bad, until they put them on the socks. Those are just gross.
great concepts, all of them are what i'm sure we've all been missing: drawings of hockey sweaters that we can all debate.
I'm glad it's not in a scrolling marquee that takes forever to put together, sometimes, simple for the sake of speed is a wonderful thing, no matter how cool that thing was.
The Lone Stars is definitely the best, and I'd be all for a minor league team wearing that (and only because Dallas has their color scheme identity already). great jersey, great logo, awesome idea that's really well put together. How about a white version?
The leafs logo is actually pretty good. It's the one Original Six logo that isn't sacred, considering how many times it has changed in the past (and really the only one to change since 1967). The jersey...is way too RBK for my taste (oh, i'm sorry, is it "reebok" now? I keep forgetting all the massive wordmarks on everything they make). As far as a concept goes, that's one of the best we've had for the Leafs, even if it never makes it to a real jersey.
the other two...i'm sorry, i'm not feeling them. The Oilers jersey is simple and classy, but i'm lost on the logo. The Sens jersey has too many different concepts going on at once. The hemline stripe is from the old 3rd, the sleeve stripes are very Florida Panthers, and I'm not sure, but I think the shoulders might be ripped from the old Canucks fade 3rd jersey (with the angular-instead-of-rounded shoulders), plus the new logo. I'd split that up and have one with the arm-style stripes, one with the hemline style stripes, and one that fits well with the shoulders
It's great to have this site back, Chris, considering my last post before the shutdown was rather blunt, I hope you keep things simple and to the purpose of the website. don't overwhelm yourself, we all enjoyed things when they were running smoothly and daily.

Being from Dallas, I don't like the Dallas concept simply because I am tired of people making concepts with stereotypical Texas themed concepts for the Stars. I love the name and relative color scheme they've always had of green, gold, black, white (though they are unfortunately trying to get rid of the green), and it seems a bit uncreative when all people come up with for Stars concepts are designs with cowboys, sheriffs, revolvers, and cattle. The current name and logo are great and very much loved here, so it would be nice to see people work off of them like they do the other teams and not try to change them.
Otherwise, I mostly like them all (even the Stars one if it wasn't a Dallas Stars concept), but I do think the Senators concept is a bit too cluttered for today's jerseys.
My stars concept was meant to be a concept for when they moved from Minnesota they should've changed their identity completely since I always thought those colors belonged to Minnesota (although not the logo because it was only used one year in Minnesota). I based the jersey off of the Oilers vintage third since it was a concept for the early 90s and this look would definitely not fly in todays reebok edge era of jerseys (even though I used an edge template lol). I agree there's way too many red, white, and blue color schemes in the NHL now and I wouldn't change the stars colors or logo now that they've been established in the city, but It was a concept for when they first came to Dallas I think they should've done to distance themselves from the North Stars. I thought of putting the Texas flag as the shoulder patch, but I thought that'd be overkill on the Lone Star theme.
I agree, it would've made an awesome jersey for a new team! Reebok scares me. Whenever teams want a new logo, or whatever, they shouldn't have to ask anyone. They should just be allowed to change it whenever. It would be so impractical, but it would be a lot more fun.
For the new Leafs logo, I suggest cutting out the bottom two points on the leaf, making it more like the leaf on the Canadian flag.

But they are much more defined, and spaced out. The one on the leafs logo looks almost to cluttered...
Toronto: Love the Leafs logo. It actually looks like a leaf, not the leaf silhouette they currently use.
Dallas: I don't know, for some reason I just can't imagine the Stars as a red/white/blue team. I know that we all think of them as having the Minnesota identity, keeping the name and logo from when they moved (they used the Stars logo their last season in Minnesota).
Edmonton: Okay, I guess. The logo has too much negative space though, but I like the font. Still, anything's better than those crappy "practice" jerseys they currently wear.
Ottawa: I've seen it before... literally, the shoulder trim and arm stripes are exactly similar to the pre-Rbk Edge Florida Panthers jerseys. The bottom looks terribly awkward, also. But I do think the Senators need to go back to black, like their old third jerseys (without as much gold stripiing on the bottom).
man, chris - you waste our time by saying you'll be back one day, eventually come back, and then waste our time with nothing but the same old crap that you had before you quit; subpar concept art and minimal posting. maybe you should have waited for actual news, that is if you're only limiting it to 3rd news... seems puckdrawn's done pretty well in your absence - hopefully it continues. NHLTol this ain't anymore.

Love the idea to change the Oiler unis... They're still stuck in the 80s. Like the logo change but the jersey seems a little iffy to me. Maybe not as dark colors.
Like the Leafs too. Sens is okay. And not liking the Stars, I agree with a previous poster that we have enough red white and blue in the league x(

The Stars management DID toy with the idea of changing the team name to "Lone Stars" before the move in '93.
That is, before someone reminded them that having a TEAM of "LONE STARS" would look foolish.
I'm glad they kept the colours.
Screw minnesota, they had their chance and pissed it away.
They've got the Wild now, they should try to build history with them.
