Fenway Will Host Bruins, Flyers

The Winter Classic 2010 will be held January 1 at Fenway Park between the Boston Bruins and the Philadelphia Flyers. This should come as a shock to no one who regularly reads Icethetics. I'm posting it today because the NHL is making the official announcement this afternoon.

Additionally, the Boston Globe posted pictures online, giving readers a sneak peek. They come from NHL communications manager Schuyler Baehman's Twitter account. You can see them right here as well.

Winter Classic 2010 via Boston.comThe logo (upper left) takes on a slightly new look from years past. Certainly a more vintage feel. The photo on the bottom shows the layout of the rink on the baseball field while in the outfield you can see the blow-up jerseys that indicate the Flyers as the Bs' opponent.

The press conference will likely yield more information. I'll update this post later tonight. The NHL will release the 2009-10 season schedule later this afternoon as well.

And one more note. Part 3 of the Sweater Switch series will be posted tomorrow. It will include Gaborik, Havlat and the other new members of the Canadiens.

So the question we're all wondering is..what jerseys will they wear?

I think the obvious choice for the Flyers is the white version of their current third. Then they can rotate out the white version of their Rbk jerseys, make the retro set their official set, and use the black Rbk jersey as a third.

As for the Bruins, I would say they should wear the jerseys they did when they faced the Flyers in the Stanley Cup Finals:

Only problem is they are quite similar to their current jerseys (save for the yellow B instead of black) and it would be yet another black jersey for the Bruins. None of their Brown jerseys look particularly good, and their yellow jersey may not provide enough contrast with the Flyers white. So, I'm at a loss.

Boston shoudl wear brown. Even if it is not an actual traditional jersey, brown would be unique and special for the game. Maybe a Brown version of the traditional sweater?
The Wings & Blackhawks set the bar high last year with such great retros. Philly & Boston will have a hard time following suit.

I really hope these are used!

The logo for the Winter Classic is a big improvement over previous ones.

I do NOT want to see the Flyers in a Quakers jersey. The Wings only got away with using a cougars jersey because the logo was a D (and did they put an actual wings logo on the shoulder)? I agree Brown would be their best option. They could probably just wear that jersey, maybe if they shrank the white part or recolored it brown or yellow, and it would be fine. Especially if they wear it with brown helmets, pants, socks, and gloves, it should provide enough contrast.

I think it would be great just for philly to acknowledge that they had a team for a year back in the 30s. It would be fantastic for some of that old history to be opened up, the pre-Original Six era.

I agree with the blog where this is posted though, I think this is rather likely.
He says:
"My hypothesis is that they [the Bruins] will use a jersey already marketed as a sweater in the CCM Vintage collection just like the Red Wings, Penguins, and Sabres did previously." and the Flyers will introduce a white version of their 3rd/new home jersey

Just kidding (kinda). I guess a white version of the orange jersey is about all the Flyers can do, but the Bruins have options galore. While a truly old brown jersey would be cool, I'm partial to 2 options: a 1950's or 60's era gold jersey (particularly this:http://nhluniforms.com/Bruins/Bruins16.html and this:http://nhluniforms.com/Bruins/Bruins18.html ), or the epic Bourque/Neely 1981-1995 jersey ( this:http://nhluniforms.com/Bruins/Bruins25.html ). Of course, I'd also be down for WHA Blazers:http://whauniforms.com/BlazersPHI.html and Whalers:http://whauniforms.com/Whalers1.html looks, so maybe they shouldn't leave it up to me.

All I want to see is the colorswitched white version of the Flyers retro jersey: http://img2.allposters.com/images/PHOTOFILE/AABH006.jpg

For the Bruins I'd like to see the black ones from this image: http://nhluniforms.com/Bruins/Images/Bruins15.png
However, it's been a while since the Bruins wore a yellow jersey. In this case this would be my choice: http://nhluniforms.com/Bruins/Images/Bruins16.png

A hockey rink doesn't fit well in a baseball stadium. It isn't aesthetically pleasing IMO.

The Flyers should wear a white version of their current orange alternate, but as for the Bruins, I think they should wear the 1924-25 jerseys, as they are brown and they are a jersey Boston actually wore. (Check out the jersey on NHL Uniforms)
