Caps Unveil Winter Classic Jersey!
No surprises here.
The Washington Capitals unveiled their 2011 Winter Classic sweater today at the Capitals Convention. As anticipated, the Caps will wear their 1970s throwback jerseys.
The original design has been modified to fit the Reebok Edge style which includes an NHL logo at the front of the collar. The jersey is white with a red shoulder yoke and the vintage logo emblazoned across the chest and six blue and red stars aligned above it.
There are blue and red stars running the length of the sleeve from the number to the wrist. The heavy red, white and blue stripes around the bottom of the sweater would be perfect but for the curved hem of the Edge design.
Outside of that, it looks just like what the Capitals wore from their inception in 1974 until 1995 when the dumped they red, white and blue color scheme for dark blue, bronze and black (personally, my favorite era until the black jersey came along).
What do you think? Did the Caps hit the mark here with a simple classic for the Winter Classic?

LOVE THEM! can't wait to get my ovie or mike green jersey
Yes! Just Like Buffalo's jerseys in the original WC, it's nice to see some history that younger fans like myself have never seen in a game before.
BIGGEST BONUS: The nameplate is the same colour as the jersey! (I'm looking at you, PHI AND BUF)
I know that it's a throwback, but I'm just not digging it. It has the elements of the past, but it just doesn't wow me like the previous jerseys have. The problem that I see is that the Caps primary jersey already is an homage to the past, so to create this one gives us nothing new. It's not bad, but it just doesn't impress me.
No big suprise with the jersey - there really weren't a lot of choices for them to pull from. I like the location of the WC patch - on the right shoulder. It appears that the wordmark logo is one single patch, as opposed to individual sewn-on letters on the hard-to-find authentics from that era. However, unlike the really cheap looking replicas from that time period that also sport a single patch, this one seems more proprotionate. I think the choice of red pants and red helmets with the white jerseys is money. Still allows them to "Rock the Red". A solid effort from the Caps.
Notice that they will be wearing RED PANTS. They only did this for their first season in the league, before they switched to blue pants.
I really like it.
One change: I wouldn't have done the stars on the front.
Putting the winter classic patch on the right chest will make the front too busy for Ovechkin and the alternate captains.
Not bad... there was really no other option. They needed to use red/white/blue, and this was the obvious choice. I love the dark-blue numbers a lot, as opposed to red.
NAILED IT!
AMAZING!!! they hit the mark on this one.
As previously stated not a lot of options in their past. Interesting that they went with red pants, they look pretty good. I think it's a great look. A rare busy design that works. I prefer it over their modern reebokinized design.
I was hoping to see the Caps in red in hopes of seeing a return of the white pants. The red pants look great though.
They're wearing white instead of red jerseys, which confirms that the Pens will wear dark. It also makes that Pens concept jersey seem more and more like the real thing.
Do you know if there is ANY chance the Pens jersey will have diagonal lettering instead of the logo?
Love them! But cut off the diaper hems!
I love it. I knew they would pick this jersey for the WC. I would love if these jerseys came back full time. haha I actually have a Dino Ciccarelli jersey like this.
Ewwww! RED HELMETS????
Something about them looks off, don't know if its the lack of gear or what but something is "boxey" about them. The reebok diaper ruins the waist stripes.
I love them. With all these new designs, it's nice to see something familiar and retro. I'm giving this 2 thumbs up.
I think they should've gone with the white pants... lol.
I did notice the red pants...
Not a Caps fan, but I like 'em! Keeping it simple. The only real minus is as Chris said - the hemline. I'm sorry, but there has to be some way to bring back a straight hem. The curved hems are an eyesore, and I have a hard time believing that straightening them out - how they should be, since no true sweater has curved hems - would have any significant impact on player performance.
Well done Caps.
is it just me or is ovie's C positioned awkwardly? but i can dig the dutch flag on the bottom! huup holland!
it would have been cool if they used the red/white/blue colors with the logos from the late 90's and early 2000's, or vise-versa
Actually, the Caps wore white pants their first season before switching to blue, not red.
should wear the short lived white pants
the C overlaps the stars on Ovies jersey. was it like that before?
am i the only one who liked the blue & bronze eagle jerseys immensely?
I thought they wore WHITE pants for their first season.
It's ok the curved hem really takes away from the original striping at the bottom of the jersey. Why do these have to be the modern cut for a "throwback" game?
But I'm bitterly disappointed that the Caps can't wear the red version of the original jersey and resurrect the white pants for the Winter Clunker.
i gotta say im kinda dissapointed that they aren't gonna wear white pants. would have been cool to see
whats with ovechins C? its in a wierd spot... love the jerseys tho
To Matthew and Breaktheice: They apparently only wore those with the red jerseys, never with the white ones. And halfway through the season they switched to red with everything becuase the white ones started to get sweat stains and looked rather disgusting.
All the same, I would have loved to see the Caps in red jerseys with the white pants. But it looks like that's not gonna happen, at least not this year. When the NHL decides to set up a game on the national mall (okay, it's a pipe dream), I hope to see those.
Also, a note to anybody else saying that these have problems: They're straight up throwbacks. Which is awesome and how teams should be doing it. Deal.
put one on dale hunter and let turgeon cheap shot his ass!
On the original verison of this sweater, each letter of the Capitals wordmard was individually sewn on. It wasn't a patch. That's what always sucked about buying a Caps jersey back then, it was really hard to find an authentic with the stitched letters. Making the wordmark on these a patch makes it look like a cheap replica jersey.
@breaktheice They only wore the white pants with their red jerseys for only a few games.
Nice job. Bring these jerseys back full time. Get rid of the Reebok cut!

The Caps initially wore white pants ONLY with their red jerseys before switching to blue early on; they wore red pants with their white jerseys throughout the 1974-75 season, before scrapping them and sticking with a single color (blue) for the next 20 years. The Colorado Rockies had a similar red/blue pants arrangement.
Very, VERY NICE!! I personally think the Caps should use these as an annual heritage uniform for 4 or 5 games per season. Just like the Canucks should use their original '70-'72 uniforms in the same way. I do like the Caps' current uniforms because the navy pants and home helmets give the team more of an American look. Overall, this is a great look. Great to see Ovie standing side by side to Caps legend Rod Langway.
As a huge Caps fan I can't help but smile at the throwback jersey. Personally I would have preferred the blue pants to these red ones and I am not a huge fan of the red helmet either. However, I can't help but be a bit underwhelmed by the whole concept. What I would have REALLY LOVED would have been a vintage looking concept featuring the "Weagle." I think it would have been a huge hit. I guess they are saving that for a third jersey, but I don't see this jersey being "it." I'm no concept artist, but i think the "weagle" on the front of these jerseys would have been kind of cool.
I figured they'd go with this look, but I still hoped they'd do the Eagle with the bronze. The 90s blue Eagle jersey is my all time favorite Caps jersey - hell, one of my all time favorite jerseys period. I proudly wore mine until the beer gut outgrew it. My teenage brother in law still wears it - and we aren't anywhere near DC!
Really everyone? This jersey is a FAIL of epic proportions for one rather large glaring problem. Kudos on the whole look, but what's with the PATCH LOGO? For a real throwback look you need the individually sewn on letters. This is the equivalent of the Rangers hitting the ice with their word-logo (not the shield logo) on a single patch. It's just tacky and half-a$$ed.
Very frustrating seeing a great concept ruined. The cheap-looking patch makes it look like they picked up the jerseys from the kids section at Sears. Ugh.
When I was a kid growing up in the early '90s, I thought the Caps' jerseys were hideous... and I must say, this still looks just as garishly awful now as it did back then. But I still approve of them in general because, hey, it's supposed to be a throwback for the Winter Classic, right? :-)
reading the above comments, i think it's funny how absence makes the heart grow fonder. yeah i get that it's supposed to be a throwback, but from a design standpoint it's still pretty horrendous imo. i don't really recall people lamenting the loss of this look when the caps switched to their blue/bronze identity, but now it's like the best thing ever.
As a life long Caps fan, I'm yawning a bit - I love the old jerseys, but was hoping for a "tweak" for the WC. How about it they'd have done it with the antique white instead of straight white? That would have given them an "old" feel.
I'm not a Caps fan, so take that for what it is, but I was never a huge fan of this look back in the day, either. I like the sentiment, it's the oldest uniform design the Caps have, and I like that they went as far as using red pants, but the design itself was always a bit of a mess. I don't like those big, wide 70s stripes AT ALL...especially since the sleeves and socks don't match.
Unfortunately, the Caps don't have a lot of uniform history to draw from. It's weird to be saying something like this since I'm generally a uniform traditionalist, but the current Caps unis are probably my favorites. I liked the blues with the eagle too, but it wasn't a look that said "Washington Capitals."
On the plus side, the application of the individually-stitched letters on the true Caps jerseys was pretty inconsistent. Were the "Washington" and the hockey stick ever in the right place? I wish the patch on the WC jerseys were bigger but at least the logo looks like it's supposed to.
