Logo Tourneys in High Gear!
In case you're one of those Icethetics readers who just sticks to the blog, I want to remind you to check out the logo tournaments going on right now under the VOTE! tab at the top of the page.
The NHL Tournament of Logos playoffs just kicked off today. The Canadiens, Red Wings, Flyers and Blues logos are among the finalists and we need your votes to help determine which one is truly the best. If you haven't voted yet, now is the time.
Concurrently with the NHLToL playoffs we're running a mini-tournament of third jersey logos. Might want to check that out too while you're there.
It includes all of the new alternate sweaters introduced this season including Minnesota, Florida and Chicago.
Last day for logo contest entries
If you intend to submit artwork for the Wenatchee Wild logo design contest, time is quickly running out. We will only be accepting entries until Tuesday night. If you don't get your work in by then, it may not qualify for consideration.
At some point this week, I'll start posting some of the great submissions we've received. I think you guys will be impressed with what your fellow Icethetics readers have come up with. Not certain when the team will make a decision on the winner but I will definitely let you know when I do.
Mike Ivall Logo Drama
I've been at work all day so I haven't been able to follow this story much. Basically, Johnny over at PuckDrawn learned that a concept logo first posted here on Icethetics back in July 2008 was being used by a kids hockey organization in Ontario without permission of the artist, the talented Mike Ivall.
I'd love to link you to a story but both versions that existed at some point today have been removed from PuckDrawn. In a nutshell, people were appalled at the blatant theft but later in the day, Mike contacted the Maplesoft Hawks and worked things out. They will continue to use his logo. Terms of their agreement are none of our business.
But it happened and I thought you might like to know about it. If you steal a logo that appears on this website or any other and put it on stuff you intend to sell (or not sell), trust me when I tell you that you will be found out and ridiculed. No one likes a thief.

@ Ivall: Congrats on getting that logo used professionally, even if it happened the way it did.
Those Maplesoft Hawks jerseys are pretty nice for a junior team
Awesome logo.
At first I thought it wasn't a big deal, then I saw that they are actually selling merch. Not cool. Glad it got resolved.
that is ridiculous. i have no problem with a company or something that intends on using someone elses logo for selling stuff or not as long as they actually contact the designer for permission of use.
Also look at www.mnmsports.ca; they have something very similar, but they don't answer their phone.
It was too bad to hear that this had happened. But I do have a question about altering a logo that someone finds, whether it be an old classic logo or a new logo. If it was altered in a way that someone was to use it for themselves for say a beer league team or minor league team and not sell is that ok? Or if they do sell merchandise does that still fall under the theft category?
@DB: The logo at MNMsports.ca is not used for sale. I think they are just using it to show what jerseys will look like. I don't think any of the logos they show are available for purchase. You have to provide your own logo when buying stuff from them.
Although I have to say, it's a very nice simplified version of that logo. Looks great.
Just to clear things up... Mike asked that I take the original story down, as well as the follow up story. He's in the process of hammering out the details of a "settlement", and since the i's and t's were not dotted and crossed, he thought it was best that I take down the stories so the negotiations go smoothly for him with the Maplesoft Hawks.
Mike is a good guy and has helped my website a lot by contributing to the design contests. Hopefully the issue gets resolved quickly. They burned him pretty good, but seem willing to make up for it.
Re: the mnmsports thing, the creator of that logo needs to talk to a lawyer. People have stolen his design and are making money off of his work.
The MnM one is a toughie because there was a clear redesign of the logo, even if it is quite clearly inspired by Mike's logo.
that logo actually shows up around Chicago every now and then as "official NHL product"
Heh, I was playing at Carleton University today and this logo was on the boards. I was so confused, but then figured out we were talking about the same team "stealing" the logo.
Interesting Jeff... if you ever come across any photos or internet links that reference Mike Ivall's Chicago Blackhawks concept logo as "official NHL product" I'd like to see it. I've heard there are vendors in the chicago area peddling wares with the logo, but kind of hard to track these people as they never seem to have any contact info or websites.
Thanks
Just want to tell, that this one of the most awesome logos i've seen on this site!
I would not be surprised if even Blackhawks stole this one! :)
I'll be taking on Maplesoft in an upcoming tournament I'll be sure to add this to my chirp list. Thanks for the material. Any ideas for chirps out of this ? Creative thinking?
I love this logo! Would have been the perfect Black Hawks alternative. I’m writing in because my son just bought a sweater with this logo on it from Mark Ecko clothing.
