Blackhawks Logo Wins NHLToL 2012!
Congratulations to the Chicago Blackhawks on winning the NHL Tournament of Logos! After three months and almost 40,000 votes, Icethetics readers have selected this logo as their favorite. The Hawks beat out the Buffalo Sabres in the final round with 56% of the vote. Here's how the rest of the 2012 NHLToL bracket played out:
The Blackhawks logo was the runner-up in the last NHLToL in 2010. It lost to the St. Louis Blues logo. Before that, the first ever NHLToL took place in 2007 with the Montreal Canadiens logo victorious — over the St. Louis Blues, as a matter of fact.
In other words, the runner-up in each tournament has gone on to win it all in the following logo tournament. Some little NHLToL trivia there for you. But does it mean the Sabres logo will win in 2014? (Or whenever the next NHLToL takes place.)

What were the percentages of the votes for the semifinals and the finals? Were they close? I was a bit surprised at how far the Predators' logo got...I like it a lot, but I was just surprised to see it get to the semis. I'd be curious to know how close they came to upsetting the Hawks. It's hard to go wrong with the Hawks or Wings when it comes to picking out the NHL's best logo, but I agree with Chicago winning the title of 2012 ToL Champion.
I personally believe that the Blackhawks logo is overrated. But there is still a huge validity when the readers of an aesthetics-driven website rates it the best logo in hockey. Congrats to the Blackhawks.
Drew: The Blackhawks logo won with 56% of the vote. I meant to include that detail in the post. (Adding it now.)
Tough to beat the Blackhawks, it's one of the best logos in all of sports. Nice to see the Central Division well represented, save the Blue Jackets. 2 Original 6 teams, the Blues, who I believe won the NHLToL last year, and the Predators, somewhat surprisingly, giving the Central 3 of the final 4 teams.
Had the Preds faced the Wild instead of the Avalanche I think the Wild would have had a place in the Semis. The forest with colors of the setting sun within the wolf's head has made the Wild's logo one of my favorites since they joined the league. I think it suffers on their current home jerseys though.
Anyway, its good to see a classic logo come out on top. Thanks for another fun ToL, Chris.
Rangers losing to the Avs... Facepalm
I am sure Paul Lukas of Uni-Watch would scream that 100% of that 56% people are racist because they voted for a Native American logo...
How is the Blackhawks logo the best? It is a very bizarre logo, I mean the Indian doesn't even look intimidating at all. The design is just really strange.
Wait people think the Predators logo is better than the Avalanche?
I am not from Minnesota nor am I a huge fan of the team but the wild logo is one of the most interesting and creative logos I have ever come across. It is a shame it didn't advance further.
Red wings beating the Flyers? No way.
This whole thing is a sham.
Chris, how about a ToL for shoulder patch logos? What do you think?
a good logo but overrated in my opinion, still in the top 7 however.
how does the Rangers classic logo lose to the Avs?
I actually don't see what people like about this logo. I don't think its the worst in the league, but I definitely would put it in the bototm 5 along with their jerseys that everyone loves. I just don't get it.
Matt: We could certainly do another one for secondary logos. I'm all for it. Just need to be sure I can make the time to keep it updated. Too many gaps between polls in this tournament and nobody likes that.
I think there's quite a bias in this kind of tournament (not a critic, just a fact I'm noting - I enjoyed the tournament a lot). People probably vote mostly because they like a team or because it's classical, thus more present in everybody's mind. It's like a commercial brand logo that everybody has seen thousands of times over the years, we jsut get used to it.
I agree with most of the comments here that I dont like the Hawks logo either, and still somehow it made it to the end. It's just really classical. Same for Bruins and Wings (and Montreal, that won in 2007, though surprinsingly didnt even made it to the top16 this year).
Penguins is my favorite. A logo does not necessarily need to be intimidating or aggressive. I love the penguin skating and seemingly having fun.
Sabres lost another finals game. Go figure. :(
