Stars Going Green with New Look

Dallas will get new primary logo, new dominant color in 2013

Yes, it's finally happening!

According to Dallas Morning News beat writer Mike Heika, the Dallas Stars will look "drastically different" in 2013 with a revamp that includes a green jersey and a brand new logo.

Heika posted these new details on his Dallas Stars Blog this evening. Here's an excerpt:

This came up in conversations today, and I know a lot of you have been asking about it.

The Stars have asked for an extension on their deadline to submit new uniforms for the 2013-14 season, and have received it from the NHL. They probably have until late January now. They are awaiting prototypes from Reebok so that they can be approved by the team and submitted to the NHL in time. Among the key points:

  • They are drastically different from the current look.
  • There will be a new logo.
  • Green is the dominant color.

Heika also added that there's a chance the redesign could hold until 2014-15 if the team doesn't think it's on the right track. But it seems like they're ready to pull the trigger.

On a personal note, I'm thrilled to hear they're moving back toward green. We know design is cyclical and hopefully the decision makers are starting to realize that black and dark blue don't make your team stand out or attract fans to your jerseys. Maybe we're moving back toward another age of bright colors like the '60s and '70s... just a little less gaudy.

Anyway, this is great news and I can't wait to see what the Stars go with. For sure, it'll be far better than what they have now! Right?

Man, between the most pointless lockout in professional sports finally ending and this, the good news just keeps rolling in. Hopefully the Stars don't go hardcore "old school" like the Lightning and make their jerseys bland or go too far the other way and try to make them too modern. Something in the middle would be perfect.

Awesome! I'm excited to see what they come up with. I'm sure it'll be a tough task trying to create a new logo that represents the team name and city that every one will like, but it's definately not impossible. I just hope the logo wont look over simplified like Tampa's.

Can't wait!

Mean and green! Good stuff. This league needs more of it! Really eager to see what they end up coming up with.

I'm actually sad to see the logo go. It has been part of hockey for 20 years and despite not being the most wonderful piece of art, it just worked for me.

@ Brian
The Stars current uniform is extremely bland so a "drastically different" look should be something a little more exciting.

I'm actually not that excited about this news for a few reasons:

1. As a Minnesota fan, I'd prefer the Stars just get rid of the green and gold. They're dark mistints of the North Stars' beautiful, classic color scheme. Maybe at least just get rid of the green and go with black and gold. That would be a fairly unique color scheme in sports. Only the NO Saints and, to some degree, the Penguins come to mind.

2. Green and gold isn't necessarily a great fit for Dallas anyway. I don't want to see another red, white, and blue combo in any sport, but something more like the Cowboys' blue and silver might be more appropriate. Or black and gold.

3. The Stars' arched wordmark jerseys are growing on me. They're unique in the league and they're fitting for college-football obsessed Texas.

4. We're about to see a ton of rebrandings and new jerseys as blatant cash-grabs from teams looking to recoup some losses from the the lockout and to try to spur interest in disgruntled fans. I realize this has been underway long before the lockout, but the whole league just saw a lot of uniform and brand updates a few years ago when Reebok's Edge jerseys took over.

I'll be interested to see what they come up with and I would like to see if they can put together a crest that doesn't rely on using the team name (shouldn't be difficult with a star), but I'd prefer to see them move as far away from the North Stars as possible. Really, I'd prefer they move out of Dallas entirely.

Im happy the logo will be redone, i never did like the unimaginative uninspired star logo from the minny days I always felt they dropped the ball changing from the great classic Northstars crest. I think thats why i actually like the current jerseys, theyre very clean and simple with a different approach which other teams couldnt pull off as well (a la NYI third). And i always detested the star pattern jerseys, what a horrible idea to recycle the terrible all star jerseys from '96. That said, they did leave out color to an extreme on the current sweaters, so a nod to green is perfect. But lord please let it be anything but a star pattern!

This is good news. But there's no telling where they may go from here with the secondary colors as I know they were experimenting with blue and silver as well. I pray they stick with the traditional franchise color scheme. The ST/\RS symbol I would like to keep, but if changing the symbol is a trade-off for having green/gold/maybe black uniforms then I guess I'm satisfied. Personally I think Buffalo has the best uniforms going - even with the grey highlights as an addition. I know the Stars were considering adding silver so if they do, I hope it's something along the lines of what the Sabres did - a throwback with some touch-ups. Can't wait to see what they come up with, little nervous though.

As a Stars fan, I must say that this is very exciting. I can't wait to see what the new threads will look like.

On another topic, does anyone know if the Flyers will get the Winter Classic jersey as an alternate? It's something I've been wondering for weeks now

New logo? Eh, not sure how I feel about that. What's wrong with their current logo?

Still, it'll be nice to see another green uniform.

Thank god they aren't going with a Red White and Blue look! Green is the only suitable colour for the Stars. I'm a little concerned about the prospect of a new logo but I suppose anything will be a step up from that boring, collegiate script. This is very good news.

My guess is it won't be a new logo, but an updated star logo. For a couple of seasons now, they have had a more "detailed" star on the jumbotron. Sort of what the Texas stars use

I have always been a fan of the idea of Dallas upgrading their name to the Lone Stars while the Wild can change their horrible name to the North Stars. However, I think it's great that Dallas will go with green as their primary colour and that the boring Star logo will be changed.

I am so happy that the Stars are changing their logo! I've hated it ever since Norm Green revealed it before the North Stars relocated to Dallas. I was always surprised that nobody ever brough up the fact that it was just a rip-off of the old USFL Philadelphia Stars logo in the early 80's. Although I'll forever miss the classic "N" from the North Stars jersey, I'm very happy to see that Dallas will finally be getting a logo which allows their identity to be viewed as strictly Texan, and not that of a team that was relocated twenty years ago. I'm also happy they are sticking with the green. Good luck with the new set, Dallas.
