Ducks Prepare for Throwback Night

Get ready for the return of eggplant and jade! The Orange County Register reported on Tuesday that the Anaheim Ducks will break out their classic Mighty Ducks jerseys for Throwback Night on Oct. 13.

Icethetics reader Kevin was kind enough to give us a look behind the paper's paywall at what the Ducks are planning. Here's an excerpt:

One major highlight of the night is that the Ducks will wear their original eggplant, jade and grey jerseys that were used from 1993-2006 when they were the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.

The club is already wearing a 20th anniversary commemorative patch on their current sweaters and has the logo on their Honda Center ice surface.

That logo and news of the Throwback Night were announced back in July. But this is the first confirmation of a throwback jersey. Eager now to see what the Ducks themselves have to say about it.

In the meantime, Kevin also pointed out a new bobblehead being sold through the team's official booster club, Anaheim Ducks Die Hards. It's Paul Kariya wearing that jersey he'll forever be associated with. But noteworthy here is the new 20th anniversary patch.

Is this the throwback jersey the Ducks will be wearing next month? If so, will they also use it again later in the season for their Stadium Series game in January against the Los Angeles Kings?

Stay tuned for details.

God, I wish the Ducks would go back to this. It was a such a unique and appealing color scheme. But I'd be happy if they brought the logo back in the current colors too. Much better than the wordmark or even the D-foot.

As a Kings fan I can honetly say they look far better than their current uniforms. Personally i thought their white jerseys (which i think were home jerseys in those days) looked great too.

The duck and cross sticks is one of my favorite semi-goofy but neat logos...right up there with the skating Penguin.

Maybe they can do a modern version of the kit with the stripes at different angles, but love the color and logo. Heck I like that they had "Mighty" in their name. They have a Cup win under their belt, they've earned that now

Agreed. The purple and jade works again because it's retro.

It's funny how everyone hated these jerseys back in the 90's, and now they seem cool again. Haha. Bring 'em back! Better than the current bland look that the Ducks have. At least it's interesting and unique.

as a born and raised ducks fan, this is the second best news i've gotten this off-season.
(besides teemu returning)

love this jersey, love this brand, and love that it's returning for at least one night.
now if only we could convince mr samueli of the same.

There was a reason the ducks dropped these...I couldn't stand them then and am not looking forward to them now....
Not every throwback is good...and this pseudo - nostalgia "oh they were great...I can't wait" gets very tiresome.

Some jerseys sucked then...and years later, they still suck now...

Oh my gosh holy crap crap cweoitj4y5mkl,356p7[;32[-340569yuoktre I cannot express my excitement right now. This is the bit announcement I was expecting, and it happened. It finally happened. You made the right choice, Anaheim. This is glorious news for people like me that love the heck out of the Mighty Ducks. Next step is they need to sell these things, which will undoubtedly go out of stock like crazy, which will hopefully, hopefully, Mr. Henry and Mrs. Susan Samueli can finally put an end to this "different identity" crap that influenced the Mighty Ducks to become just the plain old Ducks. It was a good identity while it lasted, yet the fact that they won the cup the first year with it (and that they went to the Cup Final and lost) doesn't help.

So yeah, that might be an influence to keep the current identity for a little while longer, but I'm hoping bringing the Mighty Ducks back can inspire the Samuelis to change it back the way it was. Those old jerseys and logos need to stay with the team forever. And hopefully they'll produce Edge-versions of the old sweaters (hoping that the old striping pattern can fit on the new template) and sell them, as well as other Mighty Ducks merchandise (as easy as it is to find on ebay, it'd be nice for the organization to acknowledge their older days like that). And that Kariya bobblehead, I want.

I really can't wait to see what happens next.

I wouldn't mind the classic color scheme and logo on the new template. It's still unique and much less 90's-looking

They were ugly then, they're ugly now.

These will be worn on October 13th vs Ottawa.

YES! THANK YOU DUCKS. THANK YOU.

While that cartoon logo and the word "mighty" were awful (my opinion), that uniform set was actually rather cool. The design was innovative and influential (slant stripes and full sock bottoms) but also semi-respectful of traditional jersey conventions (actual stripes and clean shoulders instead of more extreme designs like the original Nashville or Phoenix uniforms). Thank goodness they finally ditched "mighty", but their current uniforms are proving to be a bit dull. I'd like to see the new logo placed on the original jersey!

Love the colours. Love the logo. Love the "mighty"

This just screams of my formative hockey years. They had a unique identity, and would love to see it return full time. This'll do for now though :)

So the jerseys will even have the classic collar without the NHL shield?

Sep 12 · 5:17 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterBrian Brideau

I agree with many of the comments already made. These "recent classic" unis and logo are great! Their current look is okay, but I think they should definitely bring back the original logo and colors on a permanent basis.

Sep 12 · 10:30 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterDPH

Kids, don't let trendy 90's nostagia blind you. The purple and teal unis were as much as a disgrace as naming an NHL franchise after a Disney movie. Any NHL fan older than 5 died a little the day the AMD entered the league.

This off-season has made me happier than many in recent memory. Teemu returning for one more year and what may be the last time we see these Mighty Ducks retros! (I really hope not). I like many have been dying to see these back on the ice. Viktor Fasth's retro helmet which will be a nod to Guy Heberts old mask surfaced today too (just Google it if you haven't seen it yet), talk about some Mighty news!

Sep 12 · 12:20 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterJoe

I still say they should wear them against Florida, but it's cool that they're coming back nonetheless.

I read all the backlash regarding the Sabres' new third, and then I went back and read the article featuring the guy who designed the "buffaslug" and the whole process that went into designing that infamous logo. Now I'm not a graphic artist, but reading the criteria that goes into logos made me think about the Ducks logo. Most designers want balance in their logos, so I'm thinking that's why circle logos are so popular, because a circle instantly gives balance, so think about the Bruins, Oilers, Islanders. Sabres, Jets, Lightning and Devils. Also include any logo that has the logo in a circle, which is popular in baseball as well as hockey. Even beyond circles geometric shapes in general give balance and are also pleasing and familiar to the eye. Good examples in hockey include the Leafs, Sharks Hurricanes, Rangers, Penguins, Stars, and Kings.

Which brings me back to the Mighty Ducks logo. Most logos go for one recognizable geometric shape. The Ducks logo has several: a triangle, an oval, and an X. Then you get to the mask itself, which is based on an oval and has ovals for the holes. So there's actually a lot going on in the logo, but it's still so simple that even a child could draw it. Yes it is cartoony, yes it is Disney, but all the same it is a very clever piece of graphic art. It is light years more creative than whatever they're wearing now. So count me among those waiting for throwback night. Hey, if the Pens can bring back the skating penguin, and the Orioles can bring back the smiling cartoon bird, then the Ducks can bring back the Mighty Duck.

"Is this the throwback jersey the Ducks will be wearing next month?"

It shouldn't be because of the shoulder patches. The inaugural season jersey had nothing on the shoulders. As seen on the Kariya bobblehead, the circular "Mighty Ducks of Anaheim" patches with the front facing Wild Wing mask were added later.

I fear that no one in the current Ducks organization will realized this and we will be saddled with an anachronistic "throwback".

Sep 15 · 11:32 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterEldridge

I can tell you for certain The Mighty Ducks Eggplant Throwbacks will NOT have the shoulder patches(like 1993), but will have the 20th anniversary patch.

Sep 26 · 8:02 PM PDT | Unregistered Commenterpetzdux

I feel disappointed with the Throwback's Night merchandise. For example, there were limitated retro Anaheim "Mighty" Ducks online and it seems that they won't produce more there. In fact, there are only things like caps or T-shirts in the Ducks Team Store (stadium). Has anybody news about that??? ;'(
