Week 11: Jersey Design Contest
As the IceHL's 13 Weeks of R&R begins to wind down, it's time to move on to the final phase of the project. From now until Sat., July 6, jersey design submissions will be accepted for the 11 teams that have been rebranded this summer.
There are 3 rules to the contest:
- Design 2 jerseys (light and dark) using team colors and logos only. You may not alter or add to the official colors or logos for each team.
- Assemble your final design on the PNG template provided and submit it to icethetics@gmail.com. Please keep the image transparency intact.
- Include your first and last name and email address in the graphic where designated as well as in your submission email. (Unlike in past competitions, your name WILL be displayed during voting. However, your email address will remain private.)
IceHL Jersey Design Kit – 13 Weeks of R&R (.zip/622 KB - updated 6/26)
Download the jersey kit and keep in mind that eligible submissions must use the official jersey template provided. It was created to be compatible with almost any graphics software out there from Microsoft Paint to Adobe Photoshop. I also recommend GIMP and Pixelmator for Mac as other software options. (To be included in the voting, your design must be submitted in PNG format.)

To assist you in your designs, feel free to implement or mix-and-match aspects of existing hockey uniform templates. There are many available at at the link above. The copy and paste functions are your friends in this case and make designing a great jersey so much easier. But feel free to experiment on your own too.
The template includes the front and back of a jersey as well as gear like socks and pants. All you have to do is design the jerseys. Designing the gear is up to you. I'd also request that you include a full alphabet and number set as seen in the Design Kit sample. You may choose to leave out any of the elements, but keep in mind that if you do, I reserve the right to design those elements myself or disqualify your entry.
Last thing. Simply submitting your jersey design doesn't guarantee it will be included in the voting process. If it doesn't meet a certain level of quality, I'll give you the opportunity to try again as long as you meet the deadline. But I always accept far more than I reject.
For customization purposes, you may use any name and number you choose to customize your jerseys.
Remember to stick to the official team colors and logos. You may sample the colors in the logo graphics using an eyedropper or similar tool in your chosen graphics software. If you need assistance with RGB codes, feel free to ask via email.
One last note about your jersey designs. Do something creative and original. Avoid copying existing jersey designs. We want IceHL teams to stand out and be unique!
Deadline: Saturday, July 6
You have two weeks to design and submit your work. Good luck to everyone!
Someone emailed me asking for wordmarks to use as helmet decals in the uniform designs. Since I didn't include them in the original Design Kit, here they are:

Kinda late on this, but this is what I would prefer to see...
Colonials: I still like the idea of an off white away jersey. I would like to see some changes to the striping and make them more consistent. I don't think the shoulder yoke looks good with the patches on it. Lose the yoke or the patches, but don't have both.
Stallions: Don't change anything, or at least keep the two thin stripes and no shoulder patch. With the name change there is no need for the rider logo.
Olympiques: I'd like to see some continuity with the striping on the jerseys. Retain the two stripes, but move them lower so that they're on the bottom of the sleeves and torso. The striping across the middle of the jersey is overdone in this league.
Sentinels: As much as I would like to see another red jersey, the shade of blue that the Sentinels use is unique, and not the navy that is overused in this league. A red jersey would make them too similar to the Washington Capitals. I kinda prefer the alternate logo with stars for the front. Maybe even experiment with a patch just on one sleeve. Its more of a military thing, and even though that link is gone with the removal of the guard logo, maybe have it as a tribute of sorts.
Chargers: I prefer the "D" logo on the front. After seeing the new Hurricanes unis, use that as an example of how not to use red, black and white on a uniform. Use red or white as the main color, but make sure it is well proportioned and don't minimize the black or red too much.
Steelcats: I would prefer to see the red retained as the jersey color, but the logo seems more fit for a navy background. So, maybe have navy as the color but have a large red border on the shoulders and sleeves. Think like the Philadelphia Flyers have with orange or white around their jerseys only more so like they used to have. The stripes on the alternate logo seem like an obvious choice to keep.
Dragons: I'd like to see a green jersey to keep some continuity with the Arsenal. It is a great shade of green, and would look wonderful on a jersey.
Snipers: Keep it red.
Outlaws: The recently added Texas logo helps this logo set out a lot. I would like to see the logo with just the outlaw head on the front and the Texas patch on the shoulder. I hate that star, so avoid it as much as possible.
Aces: Use red as the main color, with the darker red as a secondary color to distinguish them from the Olympiques. I don't have a preference on the logo.
Lumberjacks: I don't have any ideas for this, but I would like to see a lot of yellow used. I don't like the sasquatch logo too much. I'd rather not see it on the jerseys, but if it is used then have it on the shoulders.
Can we use names of players who where just drafted this summer?
@ Chirs: Need some information about Snipers colors, I’m not sure about the silver. It is 164;173;176?
Gotta get to answering some questions.
@Geil Schock: Yes.
@Brendan: No, Alaska's uniforms will remain the same. Only the logos will be changed. They are not in the same boat as Boston because Boston was designated by voters as a team in need of rebranding. The Huskies were not. The logo designer simply chose to update his logos of his own accord.
@Peter: Yes, just as with logos, existing uniforms will be included in the voting where applicable.
@Ben M: To reiterate, you may use any names and numbers you choose for your designs.
@A: The Snipers silver is (R-G-B) 162-170-173.
I'm excited. I submitted 16 jerseys for 8 teams.
For those of you who got all 22 jerseys in I applaud you. This isn't easy. It is time consuming and difficult.
Major props.
When do the votes begin?
@Tiwi: Plan is for voting to begin Monday. Can't give you a time right now. Whenever I'm done, I guess.
I'm visiting the page each 20 minutes. I want so bad to see what people created!
