Updates Imminent

Apologies for the lack of posts. This is getting pretty bad. Every time I try to upload photos, I'm getting an error message from Blogger, the service I use to maintain this blog. Obviously, the majority of the posts — especially the concept art — are reliant upon the image upload feature working. This is why we have nothing new today. And it's not just affecting me, by the way. But trust me, as soon as I can get images uploaded again, I will be all over it. Keep checking back. Thanks for understanding!

Blades Rough Up Sea Wolves

Not that you asked, but I enjoyed first regular season ECHL game tonight. I tried to get really into it, but the Everblades are just not my team. The Lightning will always be my team. But it was still a great game. The Blades tore through Mississippi with a 6-1 win.

I felt a little strange about it though, considering Sea Wolves goalie Morgan Cey is a Lightning prospect. He looked like crap, basically.

Anyway, I took a bunch of photos, so I'll run through a couple of them since you're here and reading this.

The Seminole Indian Tribe sponsored a bunch of blinking necklaces that were handed out as freebies when you walked in the door. It gave the arena a very interesting look during the the pre-game ceremonies.

The 2007-08 team was introduced to fans attending the opening night game. I don't really know any of them. Although I did meet captain Ernie Hartlieb and Steve Czech. They were interviewed on the television show that I work on.

Also, during the ceremony, the Everblades retired a couple of jersey numbers — the first in team history. All in all, these ceremonies honoring retired players and such lasted forever. The game was supposed to start at 7:30 PM. The puck didn't drop until after 8:30.

But when it did, it was fun to watch. I think I've been spoiled by the quality of NHL hockey in watching the Lightning over the last 15 years, but it was still entertaining hockey at Germain Arena, nonetheless.

I definitely plan on checking out more games as the season goes on. Well worth it, if you ask me. But I still miss going to Lightning games.

Hockey Game Tonight!

You guys won't see any posts until way late tonight and I want to apologize in advance for that. I have a hockey game to go to! The Florida Everblades and Mississippi Sea Wolves right here in Fort Myers! It's opening night for the Blades and I didn't want to miss it. Expect to see another jersey review as well as the Freak Out Friday post some time later. Thanks for your patience, but I know you understand. It's hockey!

Concepts On The Way

Sorry guys, I was trying to get you a concept art post today, but Blogger doesn't seem to want to cooperate with image uploading at the moment. As soon as they get that little problem fixed, I'll be able to bring you today's concepts — and they're pretty good ones, too.

In the meantime, if you haven't done so yet, go vote on the best vintage NHL logo or the best primary AHL logo. You could even go rate the new Rbk EDGE uniforms and read the reviews.

Anyway, I'm hoping to have a post up before I call it a night. Thanks for your patience!

AHL Logo Tournament Starts!

For those of you interested, the AHL Tournament of Logos has begun. You can vote starting today in the preliminary round bout between the Iowa Stars and the Lake Erie Monsters.

Other polls will be posted on a daily basis over there at the Tournament of Hockey Logos blog. Hope you enjoy it!

The AHL logo champion will be determined on November 23. At that point, the ECHL Tournament of Logos will start.

Introducing The NHLToL Expert Panel!

The time has come for me to introduce you to the NHLToL Expert Panel! Why an expert panel? Why not?

As this site has gotten more popular over the last several months, I've started to feel like we could use the opinions of some folks educated and working in the field of graphic design. So much of what this site is about deals with design. In fact, just about everything deals with it. So we now have five people who will provide "expert" criticism of the logo and jersey designs featured here on a daily basis.

I'll make an announcement soon about what their first big project will be, but right now, get to know them a little bit in their own words. One thing you'll notice is the logos next to each bio. These logos were designed by each panel member and will identify them each time they write something here at NHLToL.

Doug, Watertown NY

I am an alumnus of The Art Institute of Pittsburgh. Originally from the Buffalo/Niagara Region of NY, I came back home after his schooling in Pittsburgh and began my career.

Starting out as a Photoshop photo retoucher, I then moved away from the Western NY region to enter the world of package design/printing and now am using my prior experiences to help develop and design corporate brands and identities for one of the oldest names in the auto accessory business. With over 10 years of varied design experience under my belt, I have a good eye for what can make a design work in the market or fail miserably in the process.

A passionate Sabres fan for the last 10 years, hockey has steadily creeped into my household where plans with friends are made around the Sabres' schedule come hockey season. With the birth of my first son coming in January, I am already day dreaming about my boy playing in the NHL in 20 years.

Kathleen, Washington DC

I received my BFA in Communication Design from Buffalo State College in August 2006. Admittedly, I am a fairly recent convert to hockey fandom, but always admired hockey logos from afar.

I am an expert (or think I am) because of my chosen field, and being exposed to hockey growing up in Buffalo NY. I understand the great tradition of this sport, and believe out of all of the "Big 4" sports, team logos are most visible in hockey.

Drew, Buffalo NY

I am a freelance web and graphic designer residing in Buffalo, New York. I've done design work for the Official Buffalo Comicon, M&T Bank Corporation, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, as well as logo and flyer designs for local bands, movies, and events.

I'm a lifelong Sabres fan, who infamously ran the Fix the Logo campaign, protesting the "slug" logo design now (dis)gracing the Buffalo Sabres uniforms and merchandise everywhere. For the record, I still buy nothing but vintage logo stuff.

I'm a lifelong comic book fan and collector, and I think that the colorful costumes and iconic symbols of some of my four-color heroes influenced my interest in sports uniforms and logo design. I am also a guitarist, song writer, sometimes actor, sometimes writer, and aspiring craft brewer. Cheers everyone!

Lindsey, Las Vegas NV

I was born and raised in Southern Oregon and I moved to Las Vegas a little over three years ago to get my Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design at The Art Institute of Las Vegas. I have years of training in visual arts, corporate identity, advertising and marketing, and print publication. Graphic Design is as much about the science of how the viewer's brain sees an image as how they react emotionally to what they observe.

But first and foremost, I'm a huge hockey fan and I have been nearly my whole existence. Pens for life!

Ryan, Portage La Prairie MB

Hello everyone. I am your neighbor from the north. I am very excited to be included on this expert panel and cant wait to bring you my opinions and help make this site even better. I have been doing Photoshop for about a half a year and have been taking graphic design courses. I think I will be a good fit and will bring a lot of strong opinions and can be a good critic when choosing the best in the NHL when it comes to jerseys and logos.

So there they are. I hope you all enjoy the diverse input from Doug, Kathleen, Drew, Lindsey and Ryan here at the NHL Tournament of Logos. As you can see, they have their favorite teams, but don't worry, they won't let that get in the way of their actual design analysis.

You will get to see some of their first "critiques" this weekend along with the announcement of their new project. We all look forward to your feedback.

AskMen.com Recommends NHLToL

Ran across something really cool today. A couple of weeks ago, NHLToL was selected as the Yahoo! Pick of the Day. Well if you didn't think that was cool enough, just ask men.

Really.

AskMen.com chose the NHL Tournament of Logos today as one of the "best and coolest sites around" in their daily feature.

I'm always floored by stuff like this. It's so cool. The best thing is that we were given a 9/10 rating by the site.

My thanks go out to whoever recommended NHLToL to them. Hope you guys all continue to enjoy it!

Slowing Down

So now that hockey season is back in full swing, my site no longer seems to be necessary to give folks their offseason hockey fix. So after averaging around 70,000 to 80,000 hits a day, we're down to around 9,000 or 10,000. Nothing to sneeze at, but definitely not the traffic I had this summer. And that's to be expected.

So while I don't have the content I did during the peaks this summer, just know that I'm still working on this site as much as ever. In fact, right now, I'm taking a break from designing Center Ice graphics.

In fact, maybe some of you can help me. I'm working on the New York Islanders right now. I've got the logo and center line in place, but I can't seem to get the right font for the text around the circle. If any of you guys still reading might be able to offer me a little assistance in that regard, I'd be more than appreciative. But I envision this problem cropping up on more than one occasion.

If you think you can help, drop me a line in the comments or by email.

That reminds me, I still need photos for most teams, so if any of you have pictures or have seen pictures online, I'd love for you to send them my way if you can. This is going to be a very slow process if I'm doing it all on my own.

Anyway, I'll have today's uniform review posted shortly and then I'll be calling it a night. Enjoy yourselves and let me know if you guys think of anything else I can do to improve upon the site.
