Senators vs Hurricanes

vs
SENATORS
HURRICANES
4-4
8-0

The Aesthetics
The Hurricanes logo has been unbeatable to this point in the tournament. It's a strong logo that's simple and sharp. The Senators logo gets a bit bogged down in detail and probably won't even be in existence much longer.
Hurricanes

The Nickname
Mother Nature tends to leave a path of destruction in her wake when a Hurricane is involved. Even Senators aren't safe.
Hurricanes

The Analysis
Neither logo makes an effort at representing their home city. The Hurricanes name, though, at least gives you a hint to the geographical region. Plus, I'm a big fan of the puck used as the eye of the storm. Chalk up another sweep for the 'Canes.

Capitals vs Sabres

vs
CAPITALS
SABRES
4-4
4-3

The Aesthetics
The Capitals logo, as discussed is a wordmark with a hockey stick and a puck and that is the opposite of what's required to take this point. On top of that, the Sabres actually have a rather aesthetically strong logo.
Sabres

The Nickname
I can't really think of how to compare Capitals and Sabres, but let's say an army of Sabre-wielding anarchists stormed the Capital. They would probably overwhelm the lawmakers.
Sabres

The Analysis
Sabres fans everywhere have bemoaned the "Buffaslug" all year, begging for a change. I agree in that the team could do better, perhaps in merely placing an actual sabre in the logo would be an improvement. It's the reason why the team hasn't earned this point all tournament. That won't change today. Despite the Capitals logo being a glorified wordmark, the three stars representing Maryland, Virginia and the District will win me over in this match.

Thrashers vs Maple Leafs

vs
THRASHERS
MAPLE LEAFS
4-6
1-9

The Aesthetics
The Thrashers logo is so much better looking than the Maple Leafs. And I say that despite the hockey stick the bird is holding. What's worse is the team name completely spelled out in the Leafs logo. I've said before how the Maple Leafs can improve without scaring lifelong fans away. It is possible, believe it or not.
Thrashers

The Nickname
I've never heard of a Maple Leaf hurting a Thrasher. The Thrasher, on the other hand, has some nasty claws.
Thrashers

The Analysis
Neither logo is really strong in this category. Here's the thing, though. When you look at the two, which is easier to guess the home city of, if you didn't already know it? If we're ignoring the fact that Toronto is spelled out in the Maple Leafs logo, the maple leaf itself is a dead giveaway for Canada. It would be pretty impossible to guess where the Thrashers come from.

Lightning vs Capitals

vs
LIGHTNING
CAPITALS
3-5
4-3

The Aesthetics
While the Lightning logo may include an annoying wordmark, the Capitals logo is almost nothing but a wordmark. And not even a very good one. I like the Capitals' new colors, but I don't like what they did with them.
Lightning

The Nickname
If Lightning struck the Capital, it could all go up in flames.
Lightning

The Analysis
Both logos spell out the team name so it comes down to the more subtle elements. And in that area, the Capitals logo has a hockey stick and a puck. Still, I'm a fan of the three stars about the word "Washington." The Lightning logo, on the other hand, has no such subtle elements. Now if we were looking at the secondary, it has an outline of the state of Florida which is a nice touch. But we're not. No sweep for the Bolts here.

Thrashers vs Bruins

vs
THRASHERS
BRUINS
4-5
3-2

The Aesthetics
These are two very different logos. But on straight-up looks and color combinations, I'm a fan of the Bruins logo. The changes they made recently make a big difference in my eyes and I've never liked the hockey stick in the Thrashers logo.
Bruins

The Nickname
A Bruin would kill a Thrasher with his thumb. If he had a thumb. Instead he'll just have to use his giant teeth or something.
Bruins

The Analysis
This is where the Bruins lose the point. And you could say I'm being spiteful when I tell you the sole reason I'm taking this point away from them is that there's not a bruin to be seen in this logo. I like the one on the new shoulder patch. But what can you do? Also I actually do like the Thrashers color combo.

Canadiens vs Thrashers

vs
CANADIENS
THRASHERS
6-2
4-4

The Aesthetics
As far as looks, I think the Thrashers have a great, strong logo. Unique color scheme. The hockey stick turns me off, though. The Canadiens logo, on the other hand, is very bold. It just stands out. And the bleu, blanc et rouge? Don't question it.
Canadiens

The Nickname
I feel like we've had a similar incident before, but say a Thrasher is flying in the air. It would be very easy for him to lay a "bomb" on the head of an unwitting Canadien.
Thrashers

The Analysis
First off, you'll notice that while the Thrashers logo actually features a bird, the Canadiens doesn't truly symbolize what it's meant to. But then the question is what does a "Canadien" look like anyway? So I guess the "C" is appropriate. It's well-designed and pays homage to the past in an aesthetically-pleasing manner. But enough talk about that. The Thrashers logo has some rather cool colors, but that would've earned it credit in Aesthetics above. Here, you gotta have something deeper. And the Habs have it. (That mysterious "H.")

Lightning vs Penguins

vs
LIGHTNING
PENGUINS
3-4
0-5

The Aesthetics
Both logos have simple color schemes. The Lightning logo lacks the movement seen in the Penguins. The hockey stick gives it a demerit but the Lightning logo goes all out with the team name. That doesn't win points.
Penguins

The Nickname
If a Penguin got struck by Lightning, that would be that.
Lightning

The Analysis
Not only is the penguin in the Penguins logo carrying a hockey stick, but he's donning hockey gear with the gloves and skates. It's cute — if he's in a comic book, not on the front of a jersey. The '90s era logo was an improvement, though I am a fan of the Vegas gold. Fortunately for the Pens, despite all of that, the Lightning logo's use of a '90s era lettering and a flat yet 3-D bolt wins them the point.

Thrashers vs Devils

vs
THRASHERS
DEVILS
4-3
7-1

The Aesthetics
The Devils have a great-looking logo by most standards, but it's very flat. Despite the hockey stick in the logo, this one goes to the Thrashers
Thrashers

The Nickname
The Devil is evil and powerful. A little bird like a Thrasher doesn't stand a chance.
Devils

The Analysis
Both logos are effective and appropriate and don't lose any points there. So we look to the underlying stuff like the subtle "NJ" in the Devils logo and the blatant and annoying hockey stick held by a bird in the Thrashers. I think you know where I'm going.
Devils

Devils vs Capitals

vs
DEVILS
CAPITALS
5-1
4-2

The Aesthetics
The Capitals logo is really not much more than a wordmark and it may be solely for that reason that the point here goes to the Devils. However, the Devils have a pretty killer logo and we'll say that's why they get the point.
Devils

The Nickname
Is the Devil even on the same level as a Capital? He could swallow the entire place into pit of fire.
Devils

The Analysis
This Capitals was just introduced less than a month ago by the team. I think it still needs work. Still, its one redeeming quality is the three stars above the word Washington. They represent the D.C. flag. However, they get a little drowned out by the blatant and unnecessary use of a hockey stick and puck. I'm all for tradition and remembering where you came from, but this is just bad. Regardless, I'm still loving the "NJ" that makes up the red devil in the Devils logo. I'm not saying it can't use an upgrade or "modernization" but it definitely wins this match.

Flyers vs Thrashers

vs
FLYERS
THRASHERS
4-7
3-3

The Aesthetics
You can tell these two logos come from very different eras. Both of are strong hockey logos but when it comes to the look and use of color, the Thrashers beat out the Flyers in that area despite the blatant use of a hockey stick.
Thrashers

The Nickname
You could say a Thrasher is a Flyer. But the Thrasher sounds much fiercer.
Thrashers

The Analysis
This is where the Thrashers logo gets in trouble for its hockey stick. At the same time, its where I give credit to the Flyers logo for the "P" that does Philly proud. I also like the simplicity in the Flyers logo but the sharp, tapered points in the Thrashers logo work in its favor. Still the Flyers have one of those classic sports logos that will be around forever, I'm sure.
