Bolts Goalies Get Sawed
Is anyone else disturbed by Oren Koules' not-so-subtle attempts at cross-promoting his horrible movie with my team?
Last night's Lightning-Thrashers game was littered with an assortment of Saw V promotions, not the least of which included some special — and I do hope temporary — goalie masks for Olaf Kolzig and Mike Smith.
Smith played and wore this mask.
But apparently one has been designed for Kolzig as well — my thanks to Puck Daddy for finding a picture.
I'm just a bit disappointed. I'm not a fan of the movies so I guess I'm biased. But I do have to admit he's not an idiot. Koules and his marketing team sure know how to take advantage of what they've got.
But seriously, what's next? Charlie Sheen wearing a Lightning jersey?
One more thing and totally unrelated. I can say this because my team is sucking just as bad. What's up with the Flyers? You put six tallies on the board and you still can't win a game. You're the only team left. Get it together.

Yeah he is promoting his movie with his team, but these masks are being auctioned off to charity, which in turn if way they are being game worn! :)
SAW V!!! Haha I love it, sorry.
While I am... or was a fan of the Saw movies.. (it's getting a little overdone now, but I'll hold judgement on that til when Saw 17 comes out) I do think this is a little ridiculous.
With the signing of Pettinger (a business partner, however a small one) and now this, I am more then a little suspicious of the Lighting's owners' true reasons for for buying this team...
However, I do think Saw 1 was one of the most original movies of recent years
You know, I never heard of Saw until they mentioned it on PTI a couple weeks ago.
But it's weird that they would advertise for their movie by using a team like the Tampa Bay Lightning (sorry, their record sucks).. then again, they used the Los Angeles Kings and Toronto Maple Leafs in The Love Guru, so who am I to judge?
I watched the my Flyers play tonight and it just looks like Biron and Nittymaki have given up and thrown in the towel. For God's sake, Biron fell over one goal to let it in and later decided to sluggishly cover the outside of the net and let Marleau score the tying goal on a wrap-around! What a joke and where's the Tylenol?!
Kinda cheesy. Is he promoting the team to movie fans as well? Or is this a one-sided thing?
I wonder what Smith and Kolzig think of this and if it was voluntary or if it was a mandated thing.
Not a big fan of "cross promotion" especially on the players. Put ads on the boards, or even on the ice, but keep the ads off the goalies! To take it a step further, will Smith have to have Charlie Sheen on a mask? Or will he change masks every time Koules comes out with a new product? He probably is waiting for the day when the NHL allows on-ice advertising like some minor leagues allow.
Just a thought.
The Flyers? What cost us the game last night was Joffrey Lupul's awful defense, coupled with the inexplicable decision by John Stevens to pull Niittymaki after a first period in which he made several spectacular saves and had no chance on any of the goals scored by the Sharks. Then, Biron lets in two terrible goals (that's the second time he's been caught out of position on a wrap-around) and does his usual shootout performance.
I think the bad record has a lot to do with coaching. It's been difficult for the Flyers to find much consistency because Stevens changes his line combinations every game. It's got to turn around somehow, right?
Does Kolzig still feature Godzilla on his helmet while playing for the bolts? Pics?
Yeah Niittymaki made some great saves but he still let in 4 goals on I believe 15 shots. I think general consensus is to inject fresh blood in the net at that point. I think this game was just the teams capitalizing and succeeding on the opportunities that arose. I thought the Flyers played pretty hard (especially in certain stretches of the 3rd period where they outplayed/outhustled the Sharks), but when the Sharks were on, they were hard to stop. A lot of the goals seemed like bad breaks, deflections, and scoring off the transition.
Still, more pressing for me is how Nabby let in 6 goals here and 4 in the last. He's winning yeah, but it seems like after Ron Wilson was shipped out, the defensive focus has been overly de-emphasized in favor of a dynamic offense.
Still think the Flyers will pull it together though. Another bounce here and they could easily have won both those games.
Oren Koules is the owner of the Lightning and producer of the Saw series so he can do whatever he wants. I think this is a great cross-promotion. I hope the goalies get some extra cash for advertising though, but since this will be for charity it might not be.
Brodeur had mentioned in the past goalies could be used as advertising (on their jerseys mind you) to raise money for the game and this is the first sign of that. Goalie masks are a good canvas for ads, they get a lot of closeup tv time. I like that they are auctioning them off for charity afterwards.
Being a Flyers fan right now is kinda torturous. The team shows promise, but they just can't win.
