On Deck For Super Saturday

This is going to be quite a night. For one thing, it's what the NHL is calling "Super Saturday" — all 30 teams have games today. But there's some other stuff going on.

First, we've got the unveiling of the new Winter Classic jerseys tonight during the Red Wings-Blackhawks game — which will be broadcast locally on FSN Detroit and WGN-TV in Chicago. I'm also assuming the teams will have pictures or video posted on their web site at some point tonight or tomorrow.

As soon as there's something to post, I'll have it right here on Icethetics.

But we have a few hours, so why not speculate? Turning now to one of the best hockey sites on the web for some visual assistance — NHLUniforms.com. My honest opinion is they'll go with the 1991-92 throwbacks.

Classy... obnoxious... you know the drill. But a random message board post — which I can't vouch for the veracity of — suggests these as the subject of alternative speculation.

It would certainly be an interesting choice for both teams and nothing to sneeze at but that isn't even a Red Wings jersey. It belonged to the Detroit Cougars. In any case we'll know for sure tonight. Hope those of you that can watch will report back.

I also wanted to mention Thursday's Canucks post again. The date referenced in that video is tonight. And after reading all the comments and other message board posts elsewhere, I'm among those convinced this viral promotion has to do with the fans and possible the return in some form of the 7th Man campaign.

I mean the answer to all of the questions in that video is "the fans." So it makes sense. Now, having said that I'm still not discounting the possibility of a third jersey unveiling. That would be a nice gift to the fans, I'm sure. So those in attendance tonight at GM Place can report back and I'll spread the word here.

So besides, Danny Boyle bitterly returning to Tampa in a new sweater, anything else going on tonight around the league?

Not much except Ovechkin is still missing from the scorers sheet. If you or anyone has information about his disappearance, please contact the Washington Capitals.

It's already been said that the jerseys are going to be entirely new throwbacks, so it's likely they aren't going to be the stripe-crazy 1991-92 ones again. I don't know about the Hawks but all signs I've come across point to the gothic-D jersey for the Wings.

I wonder if Stamkos will get that elusive first point. 44 skaters (two goaltenders) have made their NHL debuts this season, and 26 of them have received points. Surprisingly, not only is Stamkos not one of them, but two defensemen, Janne Niskala and Drew Doughty (YAY!!) have already scored a goal.

Of course, Doughty was the #2 pick, behind Stamkos. So far, Doughty is 1-0=1, +6 rating, while Stamkos is 0-0=0, -1 rating. Both have played six games, so it seems that the Kings have gotten the better end of the draft so far. Not to mention, the Kings are 3-3-0, 6 pts while the Lightning are 1-2-3, 5 pts. Doesn't seem like a big difference, but it feels like the Kings have done much better so far.

If it makes you feel any better, Chris, neither Bogosian, Pietrangelo, or Schenn have any points either.

The commentators were just talking about the jerseys. The Wings are going with the old Cougars jersey, with the D on it, while the Blackhawks are going with their original jersey. The jerseys will be shown between the 1st and 2nd period.

They just showed them on TV. They are indeed the second set of jerseys shown in the post.

They have a picture of Toews and Kane in the jersey on the Hawks website.

anything else going on tonight around the league?

Couple of odd things:

Someone threw a smoke bomb on the ice in Philly during OT. On YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VhLx_lHD4Ag

In Boston, it was discovered the west end faceoff circles were four feet further from the goal line than they should be. The ice was installed Sept. 9 and they just noticed this.

The jerseys are ugly for the Classic.

The jersey that says "DETROIT" across the front isn't a Red Wings jersey either. (Well, maybe technically it is because they wore it during the 1991-92 season.) It's the 1927-28 Cougars jersey.

They're not exactly horrible, just not beautiful. But, they are a downgrade from last year's jersey, but those are hard to follow.
