Start Voting On Flashback '98

The first polls have been added to the pollbar for the Flashback Logo Tournament '98. This is the preliminary round where you'll choose the best logo from each team. The winning logo in each of these polls will find a place in the tournament bracket.

Each poll will remain open for four days. Happy voting!

Flashback 1998: Alternate Logos

Yesterday I introduced the subject of the next tournament of logos: the 1998-99 NHL logos. A lot of you seem pretty excited about it and so am I.

Like I mentioned, this tournament will be different because in the preliminary round, we'll be deciding the best logos of each individual team. The top vote-getters there will go on to the tournament bracket. Yesterday I wrote that it would be primary vs. secondary, but that wasn't entirely accurate. We're actually going to include all of the alternate logos teams used — including those on third jerseys. Below are all of the alternate logos that will be included.

The first polls get posted tomorrow! We'll be doing two at a time starting with the best of the Kings and Blackhawks. You'll find those polls in the pollbar. Each will be open for four days.

One Final IHA Logo

Now that all 30 IHA teams have logos, the league itself needs one! I am now accepting logo submissions. There really aren't any restrictions on this one. Be as creative as you want. All you have to do is make sure you get IHA in there. Colors are up to you. They'll all be submitted to league creator Nicolas for a final decision.

Now, I've decided to let him explain the IHA and what's ahead for it and you can be involved if you're interested.

The International Hockey Association (IHA) is a professional hockey league based in a fictional hockey world. One part of the IHA is it's extensive history, going from it's creation in 1946 up to the current era, with the thirty teams you already know and thousands of players you may learn about in the future. The other part of the IHA, and the most important one, is that it is going to be part of a (fan-made) roster update for the PC sports sim NHL Eastside Hockey Manager 2007 in which you will be able to take control of one of the team on your way to building a dynasty. The following write-up is going to briefly cover what NHL:EHM 2007 is and how you can get to know more about the IHA and the update.

NHL:EHM 2007 is a computer based sports-sim developped by Sports Interactive and released in September 2006. The game puts you in control of a franchise in one of the different leagues in the hockey world (NHL, AHL, ECHL, CHL and many european leagues). As the GM of your franchise, you conduct drafts, trade players, set lines, send out your scouts and try to build a dynasty, all while being able to watch 2D representations of the games your team play. Unfortunately, with the hockey world now in the 2008-09 season and the game out of development, it has become very hard to play the game as immersively with a 2006-07 database and there was no way to play a customizable world. The IHA update is meant to give another way to see things while playing the game as this is a different universe with fictionnal teams and players. The current aimed release date is January 2009.

Icethetics came into play to create the logos that will be included with the update. The results have been incredible, and I think despite all criticism it has been a very fun project from anyway you look at it. I'm also in the process of building a wiki for the IHA and its hockey world, but it's in the early stages; a huge part of the league's history is already written though so don't hesitate to ask if you want more information. If you have any questions/comments/suggestions, email me at duff_88@hotmail.com.

Thank You,
Nicolas

So email him for any further information. I'll provide a link and let you know when his web site is ready.

In the meantime, start working on those IHA logos!

Flashback Logo Tournament 1998

A new logo tournament is starting this week! We're going back a decade for this one, though. We're going to determine the best logo from the 1998-99 season — back when there were just 27 teams.

This will work like any other tournament we've done except for one thing. In the first round of this one, you'll vote for each team's best logo from 1998 — primary vs. secondary. The winner of each of those polls will move on in the competition.

So, here's a little preview of what to expect for the Flashback Logo Tournament 1998. Below are the 27 primary NHL logos from the 1998-99 season. Tomorrow I'll show you the secondary logos and on Wednesday the tournament will begin!

By the way, we'll be commencing the IHA Tournament of Logos soon as well.

Monday Afternoon Notes

I've got a few things to talk about this morning. I'll start with the IceHL. I had to disqualify a bunch of team names that were up for rating in the Central Division. It was pointed out that several of them have already been used by obscure or defunct pro teams.

I asked that you guys not submit ineligible names since I don't have the time to search everything submitted. Anyway, some of you may want to go back and adjust your ratings based on the names that were disqualified. There are links to those pages in the pollbar.

In other Icethetics related news, we surpassed the million-hit mark. Did it in under three months too. Thanks for continuing to check in, everyone. According to my stats, we've had over 400,000 unique visitors following Icethetics in the last three months. You guys are the reason I do this every day. Thanks again!

SANFORD'S MASK GETS PAINTED
Vancouver Canucks goalie Curtis Sanford decided to wear a fan-designed goalie mask this season. And after choosing his favorite last week, it's now been painted. The team's official web site had photos of the new mask.

It doesn't quite look how I thought it would, but I think it's still a great looking mask. I like the green eyes at the top.

...

REBRANDING THE NHL & PROJECT: IHA
Been getting a lot of questions about both of these. First, I can tell you I've talked with Matt and since school and work — designing logos — have him very busy and without much free time, it may be about six weeks before we see his Blues rebrand. Hope you don't mind waiting a little longer. If you do, too bad.

Nicolas, creator of the IHA, will have a statement for everyone later in the week regarding the future of the league we designed logos for here at Icethetics. At that point we'll also begin accepting logo submissions for the league itself. The IHA will need its own logo as well.

...

NO THIRD JERSEY NEWS
Over the weekend, the Sabres and Blues unveiled their new third jerseys but I was keeping an eye on the rest of the league to see if anyone else would have theirs on display at various fan events. The Senators, Coyotes, Blackhawks and Lightning all held festivities over the weekend but none showed a third jersey. We'll probably have to wait until November for most of them.

...

FAKE THIRD JERSEY NEWS
I've been getting a lot of emails from people saying they've found pictures of all the new third jerseys on various message boards. Well, what they're seeing are the concepts created by JerseyDatabase.com based off Howard Berger's descriptions. I'm writing this hoping to get those emails to stop.

Let's take a look at the concepts JB.com did versus the actual jersey — all of which they have on their site. We'll start with the Hurricanes.

Berger wrote about stars across the bottom but we know the images he had were really bad quality so it was probably difficult to make out. Though I think seeing dots around the sweater, it would've been a better guess to stick with the storm flag design. Next, the Bruins.

It seems this concept wasn't based entirely off Berger but maybe a little wishful thinking. The main differences are the drawstring collar, the gold stripe at the bottom and the word BRUINS in the logo. Berger never said it would be the BOSTON logo and the earlier images we saw kind of confirmed that. Now the Sabres.

Berger did say it would be a throwback but the low quality images probably precluded him from noticing the slight modifications. And finally, the Blues.

For this, I'm betting Berger was looking at something similar to the image I posted on Saturday. Because of the terrible quality of the image, the jersey appears to have black stripes on it and the gold's been washed out entirely. It's also hard to tell that the ends of the sleeves are white.

So there it is. JerseyDatabase.com appears to be basing their concepts off of good descriptions but these are by no means the actual jersey designs. For that, we'll have to keep an eye out the next few months. I'll be here keeping track of all of it.

IceHL Pacific: Final Names

The final names for the IceHL's Pacific Division are in! Hundreds of you made your voice heard by rating the 20 finalists for each franchise. So here they are.

  • Alaska HUSKIES
average rating 3.69/5 by 417 people

  • California WAVE
average rating 2.87/5 by 337 people

  • Portland PIONEERS
average rating 3.76/5 by 363 people

  • Seattle AVIATORS
average rating 3.56/5 by 346 people

  • Vancouver LUMBERJACKS
average rating 2.91/5 by 313 people

Based on these names, your task — should you choose to accept it — is to brand the franchise. You choose the color scheme and design primary, secondary and script logos around that. Additional logos may or may not be included in the voting process.

Submit your logo art by email to me at icethetics@gmail.com. Do not post links to artwork in the comments. They will be deleted and not considered for use in this project. I'm also outlining guidelines for submissions below. I'm taking them a lot more seriously than I did for the IHA. If you don't follow them, your work will probably not be included.

Pacific logo submission deadline: October 11

If you want your submission included, follow these instructions:

  • DO NOT STEAL ARTWORK. Logos copied or adapted from professional trademarked logos will not be permitted.

  • Submit three (3) logos: primary, secondary and script. Use a white background. If your logo requires a white outline (think Lightning or Capitals), then use a gray background with the white outline included. ALL 3 LOGOS will be used in the voting process. If you leave out one, your work may be disqualified.

  • Submit vector art if possible. I will accept .ai, .psd and .pdf files. If you cannot submit vector art, you must be able to provide high quality images in .jpg or .png files ONLY. All other file types may be disqualified.

  • You must include your credit within the graphic itself as well as the email. This can be your real name or a pseudonym. I need them in both places so I can easily search my email to find your artwork and email address. Failure to do so may result in disqualification.

  • By submitting your own original artwork to any Icethetics email address, you agree to grant permission of its use for online or print publication by Icethetics. Do not watermark your logos or they will be disqualified.

  • No jersey concepts, please. That will be a later step in this process.

I tried to be specific here but I'm happy to answer any additional questions you may have via email. I was very clear about this but keep in mind that if you do not properly follow the instructions above, your work will likely be disqualified. So read them carefully.

Just so everyone is aware, when it comes time to choose a logo for each team, the process will work the same as the name ratings. Logo rating pages will be posted for each team and up to 20 logo submissions will be available to rate. I'm sorry I can't include more but this assures that all worthy submissions will get a fair shake.

The difference here is that once the rating period has ended, there will be a vote on Icethetics of the top 3 rated logos for each team. This assures that we choose the logo everyone wants.

Start submitting your logos!

From The Ground Up Is Now... IceHL

I've settled on a name for the league we're building here at Icethetics from the ground up. From here on out, I'll refer to it as the IceHL. You can take that however you prefer. Icethetics Hockey League... Icethetics Continental Elite Hockey League (submitted by Vic DiGital)... or whatever else fits that name.

By the way, I'll post the final teams names and begin accepting logo submissions for the Pacific Division shortly.

The IceHL. What do you guys think? Let me know how you feel about it by rating this post. Five stars if you love it! One if you want it to rot.

From The Ground Up: Southeast Names

The five markets with the most votes to be included in the Southeast Division of our fantasy hockey league are final. Over 4,000 individual votes were cast in the poll.

Here, I'm outlining those markets (alphabetically) along with the acceptable locators (listed below) for your team name nominations — which I'll begin accepting today by comment only.

  • ATLANTA, Georgia
    Georgia | Atlanta | Macon

  • BALTIMORE, Maryland
    Maryland | Baltimore | Columbia

  • CHARLOTTE, North Carolina
North Carolina | Carolina | Charlotte | Asheville

  • TAMPA, Florida
Florida | Tampa | Tampa Bay | St. Petersburg | Sarasota

  • WASHINGTON, District of Columbia
    D.C. | Washington | Chesapeake

DO NOT SUBMIT NAME NOMINATIONS VIA EMAIL. THEY WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

Submit your team name nominations by leaving a comment below. Email submissions will be discarded. I will accept nominations for one week at which point new comments on this post will be closed. Up to 20 name submissions that fit within the following parameters will be included in the name selection process which will begin next weekend.

If you want your submission included, DO NOT:
• use any name that has already been selected for this project.
• use the name of any current or past NHL or WHA team.
• use the name of any current AHL or ECHL team.
• use the name or close variation of any current or past professional sports team within the same market or geographical area.
• use the name of any team from Project: IHA.
• use any name that would be considered vulgar, obscene or in any way inappropriate. (Sorry, this is my call.)

If you decide to use a locator not already on the list above, be prepared to have it discarded. I'm not setting that in stone as a restriction, but I'm also not guaranteeing I'll include anything not on the list. Sorry for all the restrictions but sometimes you have to "guide" originality.

It was suggested that when submitting names you also submit a short reasoning for that name. I won't require that but I will recommend it since it might help your submission get votes later on if folks know where you got your idea.

Don't forget to make your submissions for the South Division. You have until September 27.

Live Chat Time Change

All right guys, I'm going to give the Live Chat another chance today. I've changed the time to 12:30 PM EDT.

According to the Blues' official web site, the third jersey unveiling will take place at 1 PM (noon, locally). It will not be streamed online like the Sabres and Hurricanes events were. However, they say there will be pictures posted on the site as soon as the jersey is unveiled. And I figured if we get things started at 12:30 it'll give me time to take some of the questions and comments I was unable to get to yesterday.

So, a lot is going on this weekend. I'm working on getting the next step of the fantasy league set up. In the meantime, I updated the Sabres' third jersey unveiling post from yesterday. I just added new pictures from the team's web site and the wires. Much better quality than the screen grabs from the live stream that I was using.

I kept an eye on some of the other fan events that were going on around the league as well. The Coyotes, Senators and Blackhawks all still have their new third jerseys under wraps. Nothing was unveiled or on display at these events — that I know of. If I missed something, please let me know.

I'll add the Live Chat window at about 12:15 PM EDT.
