Canucks Unveil Third Jersey!
The Vancouver Canucks unveiled their third jersey tonight. However, it came as no surprise to any regular Icethetics readers. I first leaked a picture of this jersey last month on the old blog. It was all but confirmed a couple of weeks ago when new pictures surfaced.
It's now been proven accurate by the Canucks' official unveiling tonight at the Sports Celebrities Festival in Vancouver. Roberto Luongo, Mattias Ohlund, Willie Mitchell and Ryan Kesler were on hand at the event to model the new sweaters.
Love that Johnny Canuck logo on the shoulders. A hundred years from now, no one will remember the identity crisis of this franchise's early years. My crystal ball tells me that simple icon will come to symbolize everything about this team. In time.
For a better look at the whale-less imagery representing the club on the new sweater, take a look at this.
As part of the unveiling process, the team posted this very nostalgic and sentimental video online. Rather reminiscent of what the Oilers did when they unveiled their third jersey last month. I'm a sucker for stuff like this.
To the writer, well done!
You can read more about the new third jersey on the Canucks' official web site.
Many more images will be available soon in the Canucks' photo gallery, available through Third Jersey Central.

WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWWWWWW!!!!!
Not bad. What we expected, but it looks better than what they had pre-Rbk Edge, to be honest. I don't know why, but I'm not gonna complain. Nice job by the Canucks to at least get that Johnny Canuck 'V' on the shoulder.
Not bad at all.....hopefully the new 'V' logo with Johnny Canuck becomes their main logo next season!
Love iT!
Never realized modern hockey began in Vancouver. No wonder we're so hockey crazy out here. :D
Like I said, if you enjoyed the video I highly recommend Hockey: A People's History. It's an interesting (Canadian) look into the game of hockey, its history, impact and goes international too. Gotta love the CBC, sometimes...Damn Hockey Theme...
Lame.
Johnny V. should be the crest.
In green too.
I wonder how sales will be seen as how lots of people already have the stick in rink jersey. Do you think they will sell me the shoulder patches for $20 or something?
I liked the green jersey concept better than this one.
very well done! this is what should have happened last year...its okay cause those have actually grown on me but i love this jersey
Classy. I love this. Well done, Vancouver.
I'd like to see these become the standard jerseys going forward, with the green ones featuring Johnny Canuck as the next third.
I was kind of skeptical when I saw the leak photos. For some reason the angling or something in those photos made it look a little odd. But now after seeing it being worn by players and with the rest of the uni, I absolutely love it!!!
I was thinking that the striping change would be a downgrade from their current home sweater, but in fact it looks fantastic. I was also thinking that the modified stick-in-rink would look a little out of place on the front, but it too looks fantastic.
I would be happy if the Canucks made this their full time home jersey with a matching white away and kept it that way forever.
Not bad not bad, that Johnny Canuck logo has grown on me, as the same with the Stick logo. Seems like the Canucks have been experimenting with a lot of things. Although I never minded their old black ones with the angled skate.
Here comes my review...
Overall, one of the best jerseys that Canucks have ever created. I'd say the only ones that compare are the Stick in Rink from 72-78 and the Flying Skate from the Early-Mid 90s
For the first time in however many dozen years it has been, Johnny Canuck makes his return to Vancouver's overall identity and not just in their name.
In the next few years I can see Vancouver harpooning the Orca and promoting this jersey to primary status and someday making the Stick and Rink as recognizable as the Blue Maple Leaf or the Flaming C.
The Highlights:
-Updated Stick In Rink (Enough said)
-Johnny Canuck V (Love It! Hopefully it becomes their third logo soon)
-Striping Pattern (I personally like the stripes on the home jersey better but it's still good)
-Same Number Font (Since the new jerseys were unveiled last year, I've liked the font they use for the name and numbers, particularly I like the number 4 since it is so unique. I'd love to get a Burrows Jersey for that reason. He's also currently my favorite Canucks forward)
The Lowlights:
-The fact that they should have released this last year as the Primary Logo
-They Didn't Use the White Stick in Rink... Not that it matters.
-Too Similar in overall Look to the Home Jersey, minus the logos. This might cause a bit of jersey confusion during play if you watch games on a smaller TV. Though you probably will be able to tell the difference if you've seen pictures of the jerseys.
Overall: There's no doubt in this Canuck Fan's Mind
5/5
Now, THIS is what I call a true blue Vancouver Canucks sweater! The modified Stick 'n Rink looks better than ever and the Johnny Canuck V is a real original classic. I am absolutely positive that this sweater will be the Canucks' primary sweater in two years, with the Johnny Canuck V on a future third green sweater.
The only pet peeve I have are the numerals. The Canucks should have gone back to the traditional block-style with a green border.
Overall, a great classic look that combines historic elements with a modified look!
I really enjoyed the video. The narrator did an excellent job with the pace and it was well written. I think it means a lot when you learn the history behind the jersey before criticizing it. Good job on the Cancucks!
I like this jersey. The updated logo balances out the rest of the jersey compared to the original vintage jersey a few years ago. I also like the spacing in the stripes with the added blue between the white and green. It feels stronger with that small change.
It would be nice if they put the Johnny V logo on the front of a new white set. I don't mind having two different jerseys for home/away.
Why do so many people want a green jersey? I think it would look hideous on the ice, case in point just look at the Hartford Whalers... Yuck!
Good job on getting the early picks for us Chris!!!
Sharp! Love how most of the teams now are bringing back the vintage look with a modern touch.
YAWN! More of the same. Wake me when it's green.
On the bright side, at least it's not navy blue or black. 19 out of 30 teams have a black or navy blue sweater.
While not a Canucks fan (though, a class of 1970 classmate fan), as a hockey fan, I like these and agree with G-man; they should make these the primary (as they were in 1970) with a green/Johnny third jersey.
beautiful jersey...sabres and canucks got it right this time....lets make the new thirds the primarys really soon....get rid of the "slug" and orca.....nothing beats the classics....or in this case the modernization of the classics
Nice but I would have loved to see the wordmark "CANUCKS" over the stick in the rink logo, now that would make it totally look awesome!
Hey Dandy,
It's called variety. What's the point of having two sweaters that are the same color?
Many people (myself included) LOVED the Whalers green uniforms.
Classic. I was hoping for something new, but this IS a very good looking jersey.
Again I say it, FREE WHILLY!!!!!!!
Lose the Whate and go with this or the V logo as the primary.
Why didn't they put tie-ups on these?
Where did they get the striping pattern from? It doesn't look like anything the Canucks have ever done, it looks like they had two blue jersey's and they needed to make it different and came up with this. When you do things for no real good reason, and base it on no reason you make mistakes. This is pretty much the history of the Canucks and there Jersey's.
Very Disappointed! They could have be a lot better. I guess when you set such a low bar for this team you have to be happy, but measuring up to the Original 6 teams, the Canucks Jerseys and logos, beat around the bush but don't really make any real statement and have no real identity. A stink and a rink can be used by any team in the NHL, isn't not unique at all!!!!!!!!
The V goes back to history and the Johny Canucks has meaning that Vancouver fans respect. Make that the primary, and stop changing the LOGO! The Rink logo looks good only on the shoulder, blown up on the chest it looks way too generic, like buy no-name brand cola.
But what do I know, I'm just a fan who buys a lot of jersey's. I guess the NHL marketers are way smarter!!!!!!! I'm not buying this jersey!
I'm at a crossroads.
Its come to a point where I'm so used to seeing the 07.08 jersey with too much going on - to seeing something as simple as what we are looking at now.
Most importantly, the fact that its just a logo swap (as opposed to a
realthird with new patterns/colours) shows that this is a move they really should've done in the first place.Enough Said.
