Sharks Third Jersey Leaked!

If you were able to join us earlier tonight for the Live Chat, you were treated to history lesson dealing with the past jerseys of the San Jose Sharks followed by a leaked image of the club's new third jersey — which will be officially unveiled next week.

I won't bore you with the history lesson here. For that, you'll have to catch the replay of Live Chat IX. I recommend it. It's good reading. Anyway, here it is.

It's obviously not the greatest quality image you've ever seen, but it is what the actual jersey will look like. It's black — shockingly. It features the full-body shark logo on the front as seen in the graphic in the upper left corner of this post.

There is a white SJ logo on the shoulders fashioned from the new wordmark introduced last year when the Sharks unveiled their new branding. The uniform features a tie-up collar and teal stripes at the elbows and on the socks, trimmed in white.

There are no stripes around the base of the sweater and the numbering and lettering style appears to be the same as the current home and road uniforms. What it's obvious from this image is whether the letters and numbers will be trimmed in teal or not at all.

If one of our talented readers would like to take a stab at creating a graphic that enhances what we're seeing here, I'd be thrilled to add it as a follow-up to this post.

Either way, we'll only have to wait a week to see the real thing. But it's always nice to get a bit of a preview.

Pretty much as expected from my end, minus the "SJ" shoulder patches, never knew about the new word mark. I'm sure "another black jersey" will get people riled up, I don't think it is half bad for a third.

Looks like I will be buying another Sharks Jersey. Still not a fan of the new teal and white jerseys. The new logo has grown on me. Cannot wait to see real images of this fantastic looking Sharks Jersey.

Go Sharks!

Overall, I'm pretty happy with it. We all know it could have been worse. Really, really simplistic, kind of like their previous 3rds, but has establishes a new look. I'm glad it's not an exact retread of the old 3rd and not simply just a black version of the current uniform set.

The laces are a nice touch - especially with this 'traditional' bent that SJ has been kinda angling for. Kind of reminds me of Anaheim's Black 3rds. Plus without the yoke and the bottom horizontal stripe, the chest number doesn't seem to make it overly busy anymore. Will wait to reserve judgment on the 'SJ' wordmark on the shoulder until a clearer picture surfaces, but I might consider getting one.

And as long as it doesn't prominently say 'BlackArmor' on it.

Ugly. They went from best jerseys in the league to worst. :(

Nov 14 · 12:22 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterDandy

This will look great in real life. that graphic doesnt do it justice!

Nov 14 · 1:21 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterShark fan

Woah. It's...uh...decent?

Nov 14 · 1:31 AM PST | Unregistered Commenter~Kilza~

i'm a bit disappointed in these. they had the potential of being so much better, or maybe im taking it at face value do to the not so clear image. hopefully they will be better looking in person.

Nov 14 · 4:10 AM PST | Registered Commenterbpc89

Looks a bit like a football jersey... black logo with black background?

Nov 14 · 5:19 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterBrian

Not the greatest, but it has the full bodied shark, so as a SJ fan it's a must buy.

Nov 14 · 5:34 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterIan

Well, I know one person at least who will be getting one...and that's me (#71 personalized just like my new home jersey LOL)

Nov 14 · 5:49 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterJames J.

You've always been accurate so I have no business questioning you but what's the source of the leak?

Nov 14 · 7:44 AM PST | Unregistered Commentersamusasu

Here's a clearer look at the shoulder logo:

Nov 14 · 8:12 AM PST | Unregistered Commenterdc32

yea its not too bad...could have been way worse...im kinda disappointed that they didnt go with the shield as the logo...that would have been sweet

Nov 14 · 8:35 AM PST | Unregistered Commentergosabres21

OMG OMG OMG OMG!!! Where is it! LOL

Nov 14 · 8:41 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterMikePho3niX

I have the chance to pre-order and if it's Full Bodied shark I'm gonna, but earlier you had an informant that said it was a the UGLY orange shield and my heart sunk. What's your confidence that this IS the 3rd? I'm still questioning since the BlackArmor nomenclature still eludes to the shield.

Nov 14 · 8:53 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterSJJohn

I hope people do concepts for all of the other blurry third jersey leaks, they're great.

Nov 14 · 9:17 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterKoho

Dans is sweet but i think the striping on the arms are to thick well maybe the teal .

Nov 14 · 9:30 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterMikePho3niX

YAWWWNNNN! Another "BLACK" third jersey, whop di dooo, kudos for Pittsburgh and Vancouver for not going black.

Nov 14 · 9:35 AM PST | Unregistered Commenterzdaddy

Thanks for the link, dc!

I updated mine as I hadn't noticed the tubing 'til it was mentioned. I had thought there was something last night, but I shrugged it off and attributed it to the pixelation.

Nov 14 · 9:38 AM PST | Unregistered Commentersh0ez (tPB)

Disappointed. I wish they would incoroporate more of the orange and teal. I would have liked to see as much orange as on the Flyers third with some teal and black. It would really stand out, and as stupid as it sounds it would be ugly, but it would be different. The black looks boring.

Nov 14 · 10:43 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterJOHN STANSBERRY

I think I'm just relieved that the shoulders don't have the triangle shark logo on it. I still think the primary's full-body sharks on the shoulders are overkill. I guess there's only a week till we see if there's piping for real or not.

Unless we see another leak of the actual jersey that have been surfacing on this site beforehand >=J

Nov 14 · 11:19 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterWashington

Meh. I like the lace-ups and the sleeve stripes, but the lack of stripes on the bottom and overall dreary black look doom it. As long it stays the third jersey I suppose it's okay.

This is the new SJ shoulder logo.

Nov 14 · 11:37 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterPuckguy

As the owner of every Sharks jersey they have ever had, I wll definately buy this one. I love it. I am slightly disappointed they went with the SJ instead of the Shark Fin on the shoulders however. Are you sure this is no Orange stripping on the arms? I seem to detect a hint of orange stripping in the original grainy picture. It would make sense sinse the teal and white both have orange stipes. I also like the teal piping on the front and back. Thank goodness they went with the Full body shark instead of the shield.

Nov 14 · 11:40 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterEasy E

The black logo on black is really hard to see; the shield would have been a better choice if they wanted to go with black.

Personally, i would have liked to see the full body shark on white, i know most teams dont use white 3rds but the leafs do it (even though as a leaf fan i would rather see the old blue version of their third)

Nov 14 · 11:43 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterJosh

I think this jersey is very cool, I like Ivall's Version but i like the piping better on Dan's. I would buy this if it's close to eather one.

I will only wax nostalgic this one time. Growing up in the bay area, even playing ice hockey out there before we had the Sharks, you learned what it meant to have an identity. Throughout the NHL's history, teams have had signature looks that have remained untouched for decades.

The Original 6 would be a fantastic example of what I'm talking about. Even if the team isn't fairing too well during a season ( yes you, Leafs fans) , the classic, basic look of their jerseys bring an intimidating look to the table every time they take the ice. For me, growing up seeing the classic looks of teams like Boston, Detroit, Montreal, ( etc..) always brought a dignified, almost regal look to their franchises. Every time you see those jerseys, you can't help but think about franchises rich in hockey history.

The San Jose Sharks first came to the NHL in 1991, and their jerseys were basic, aside from the fact that they had something NO ONE in the WHOLE NHL had. The color teal. And with that, they had an identity. Even through years of frustration, you knew when San Jose was on the ice by their signature color.

When the Sharks added orange, traditionalists shrieked. I shrieked. People looking at their jerseys puked. To this day, it's horrible to watch any Sharks games simply because of the color orange. Home jerseys, away jerseys, whatever. It's just friggin' disgusting. The Sharks had carved their identity, and it was thrown out the window because the NHL and Reebok wanted to make a quick buck off of San Jose fans.

With the leak of this jersey, my faith has been restored a little. The shoulder markers signify the first time any Sharks jersey has said 'YES SAN JOSE IS IN CALIFORNIA AND WE HAVE A HOCKEY TEAM". I hope they also have the new school fin logos inside of the 'SJ", and hell, you can even add a little orange in those if you want. But the main point that sells me on these sleek jerseys is the lack of orange, or a hope for a lack of orange.

For old school Sharks fans such as myself, this is a step in getting our signature identity back. Let's hope this carries over to their regular jerseys in the next few years.

Way to go, San Jose. You now have a RBK jersey I will actually wear in public. And it looks freakin' suh-weet.

( P.S. thanks for the leak/live chat last night. I haven't felt like a giddy little kid in ages.)

Nov 14 · 2:42 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterJoel Vinson

Blacketty black-black-black! Man, even Dallas' home set isn't this dark! It looks OK though.

Nov 14 · 2:43 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterJason

Awesome. I wished the Sharks had gone with the full-bodied Shark as their primary, so at least it's good to see it made it on the alternate

Nov 14 · 3:06 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterSteve

Holy smokes a black alternate i think this is a first for the season, seriously get over the black third jerseys go with something other than black - like kings maybe Purple or like there yellow jerseys serioulsly this is getting boring for the black jerseys.

Nov 14 · 3:42 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterMighty Flyers 09

No orange is a plus too. The San Jose Sharks are not Orange!!! Teal, black and white only! This jersey is definitely better than the other new RBK ones.

The old school laces are a nice touch too.

Nov 14 · 5:00 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterBrandon

In response to Joel's whining about orange, I've been a Sharks season tix holder since day one, also play hockey and don't mind the orange. With all the whining going on, you'd think there using it as a main color for #@! sake.

Yes, I like the original sweaters because they do give the team an identity (and I own a light and dark one). I remember that the Sharks were originally thinking of using crimson and silver as their colors. They changed their minds after a markeitng survey (plus it didn't help that Stanford uses cardinal red). But those of us who were there from the beginning saw the original uniform and logo mockups when choosing our seats during the old Cow Palace days. And one of the original concepts had ORANGE in them, so this isn't a new idea. One of the original logo concepts was also the one they used for their farm club in Cleveland (and the one they now use for the club they own in China, the Shanghai Sharks).

So for all of you whining about orange, get over it!!! The new ones still look better than the second generation jerseys and look better than this new black one. It's a pity, since all they needed to do is just add a little orange trim to the numbers, some teal and white trimming (with or without a little orange) on the bottom of the jersey (like Columbus uses) and replace the silly SJ shoulder patch with the diagonal fin logo and you'd have an extremely sharp black jersey. As it is, this jersey is okay. Sharks fans can only hope they'll go back to the original jersey as a third someday.

Nov 14 · 6:05 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterMonty 35

Woohoo! No shield-logo as previously rumoured. Glad that never made it onto the jersey!

Nov 14 · 6:05 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterWingerdinger

Well said Joel. I too am from San Jose and shrieked when I heard the addition of orange. Teal has practically become the official color of the city of San Jose and the Shark its only mascot. Orange is San Francisco, not San Jose.

I can't even recall how many times people have asked me where San Jose is. It has one million people, is home to some of the most important companies and venture capitalists in the world, and is safe and beautiful. One thing San Jose does not have: identity. No landmarks (thanks 1960s city govt for destroying all the historic buildings). But we have a hockey team. An awesome hockey team, an awesome arena, and awesome fans.

And now we have awesome sweaters.

Nov 15 · 3:03 PM PST | Unregistered Commentermatt

Monty - If you had any sense of tradition, you'd know that this concep ( http://lh6.ggpht.com/_stOBIbYpMvg/RwkicBcsxQI/AAAAAAAAC_0/eBeM66kUh6w/sjshome%20copy.jpg ) would have been much classier, solely because they silver/gray color that was once a staple of Shakrs jerseys wasn't thrown into the trash bin for some hippie's idea that San Jose would look much better if they looked like Anaheim..

Sharks aren't orange. shrug

Nov 16 · 12:23 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterJoel Vinson

Everyone says they hate how many black jerseys there are, but man, every team has at least one white jersey.
whatsupwitdat?

Nah, but seriously, at least the jerseys arent as bad as baseball uniforms. every jersey would be either white or grey. hecka lame.

Nov 16 · 3:11 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterDude

For everyone complaining that its black... what other color options are there?
The sharks palette is teal, black, white, and orange. Seeing how people freaked out over adding orange (it was never added, only further emphasized as it was always in the logo on the stick) then what color would you recommend? We have teal and white, so its either black or orange.
Grey has been dropped from the palette, as the new shark fin logo is black. I also mocked a grey jersey up real quick and its just, rather boring.
Adding another color would most likely look bad too, if you guys recall the red practice jerseys, they always just looked, well, wrong.

Im not blown away by this, but its not bad. im not sure what they could do to blow me away though, not enough history to fall back to something retro. I think they made a safe and smart decision. It would have been cooler if they saved the full body shark logo for this jersey release though and didn't unveil it awhile back

Nov 17 · 1:04 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterMike

Joel -- stop acting like other morons that say the Sharks look like Anaheim. For a slight bit of orange trim? The uniforms look nothing alike for #$%^@ sake!! Look at Mike's post -- there's always been that stick with the ever slight hint of orange. And the same "hippie" made the original mockups with gray and w/o gray and with orange in the early 90's before they established the uniforms.

And if you're talking tradition, then apparently you forgot that the original Sharks jersey were in fact teal -- they made the switch to "pacific teal" with the second generation jerseys (the first third jersey was that PT jersey).

Nov 17 · 12:03 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterMonty 35

I'm sorry Monty, but I've been a Sharks fan since day one too and the orange is just attrocious. If you look at Joel's pic, the gray is infinitely better and there is no way in hell these new rbk edge jerseys are better than the 2nd gen Sharks jerseys which are still the best looking jerseys we've ever had.

The darker "Pacific Teal" is also better looking than the original teal and the new green teal that our guys wear now. If you just look at any Sharks pics in any current hockey magazine you'll see it looks like they're wearing pajamas, it's hideous.

I refuse to buy any Sharks product with any orange on it beyond the coloring of the stick and triangle. This new 3rd looks very promising and may be my first rbk jersey purchase...

Nov 18 · 8:40 PM PST | Unregistered Commenterblueshark

WooooW! What's with all the brickering about the "SHARKS JERSEYS" and the "COLORS" they wear? Does it really matter what colors are on the jersey? I thought we are supporting the team, players and the oganizations, that brought the Sharks to S.J.. Yes , I understand that the Sharks need an identiy that separates them from the rest, which they do. I don't see anyone else in the league with the teal color on any of their jerseys. The closes one I can think of are the canucks. So, doesn't that count as their identity. Aren't the FANS, the identity of the Sharks....I mean, coaches and players say that its hard to play in the TANK because of the fans. Doesn't that count as identity? I may not be a long time Sharks Fan, but I do know that the jerseys doesn't make the team. The players make the team. I don't really care if they just wear a plain teal or white or whatever color they want to wear as long as I can tell them apart from the opponents on the ice and root for the team. Yes! I would still buy those plain jerseys if they wear them. Isn't that what a fan is? You support and root for your "TEAM" and not the jersey or color of the jersey.

If you don't like the jersey they put out, don't buy it and wear your old ones that you have. And if you like the jersey, then buy it!

with all said and done....GO SHARKS!!!! lol

Nov 20 · 7:54 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterIce Monkey

This is the actual third jersey as told to me by none other than SJ Sharkie. He came to my work and I asked him if the new 3rd jersey looked nice. He motioned for me to move away from my computer and proceeded to type in the icethetics website and said "Shhhhh"

That being said, I don't like the black jersey's, new or old. The laces are lame. The Sharks are not an original six hockey team and trying to make the jersey look old fashioned is foolish. The Sharks are approaching 20 years in SJ and its about time for a retro jersey.

On top of that orange IS NOT a color of the San Jose Sharks. It is a color of a stick on our logo! A stick which, by the way, the shark is DESTROYING!!! Anyone who likes the orange should go waste their time being a Giants fan. YUK!!!

The pic incorporating the grey is way better than our current "orange highlights"
