Penguins Unveil Third Jersey!
The Pittsburgh Penguins unveiled their third jersey tonight! At the time I"m writing this, however, there are no pictures available on the team's web site.
I'm told the new sweaters are identical to what the Pens wore for last season's Winter Classic and I've even got a couple of pictures to share with you.
A reader sent these in this morning saying Dick's Sporting Goods had already put them on sale as of today — this, prior to the Pens' official unveiling.
Thanks to Loren for the pictures.
The only difference I can see from the Winter Classic jerseys is a slight boldening of the outline on the sweater numbers. Otherwise, the striping and shoulder yoke appears to be the same. Looks like whoever said it was going to be different was trying to throw us off.
I'll update this post later tonight when more pictures are available.
The Penguins finally did post a picture of Tyler Kennedy, Kris Letang, Alex Goligoski, Paul Bissonnette and Eric Godard modeling the "new" third jersey. This is it.
But that hasn't stopped oodles of fans in attendance from sending in photos.
There are a bunch more photos accessible from Third Jersey Central.
These jerseys will make their on-ice debut against the Buffalo Sabres once again when they visit Pittsburgh on Saturday, November 15.

Killer! I loved seeing those at the Winter Classic. Excellent jerseys!
Nice, Powder blue, this decade`s teal.
I think the numbers' trim changed from dark blue to black. I'm disappointed that the logo's triangle didn't change from yellow to vegas gold and that there's no piping. Oh well, they're still nice.
is it wrong that i actually was hoping for something different like a combo of older jerseys? i was a bit disappointed seeing that its the exact same thing (with minor stuff according to Chris). oh well. Im still extremely happy with the Sabres one!
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. And no piping to be found.
Huzzah!
i too am a little disappointed...i was hopeing for somethign even a little different...they are nice but they were already done before...i still think the sabres ones are the best...even with the piping...vancouvers will be great though
yes I'm disappointed as well. Why did they wait to re-release these after last year? The NHL's marketers suck!
Please give us a Crosby jersey we want to buy!!!!! Should fans have to beg? dumb. There regular jerseys suck, they are cookie cut and the Gold doesn't stand out at all, they need to go back to Gold (yellow) like the 80's.
The Penguins should go to these full time, as the current jersey's are too plain and boring.
Beautiful. No piping to be found and faithful to the originals, can't ask for more than that.
In the winter classic, you could hardly tell the white jerseys apart from these, cause the Powder blu is so light and they have White striping and White Shoulders. Maybe if this was there alternative White jersey it would be better, playing against a dark jersey. These really suck when your trying to watch a game.
I like them. Glad there is no unnecessary piping like the Sabres' thirds. Why would Pittsburgh unveil something new? This jersey has been hot since last year's winter classic.
I really Hope/Pray that when they move into the new Arena they go back to the Stanley Cup Jersey's. Those are my Favorite Penguins uniforms of all time. Plus, they are black and yellow gold not that black and beige crap
It looks to me that the difference is that the navy was replaced with black.
Good to see Pittsburgh stay with that classic. That person who gave phoney rumours off was probaly some guy who wanted something different. Maybe different would have been nice.... but who cares, glad to see this jersey back!
It's better than the Crosby babycrap gold color they have. Nice job Penguins.
the piping is not bad on the sabres jerseys...yea it may be unneccessary but ya no what...its unique...at least the sabres do something different...and i agree with capitank47....i really dont know why it took pittsburgh so long to re-release a jersey that was worn already...i mean we saw this already...and if im not mistaken, i believe they already sold these...there are alot of people with this jersey...
That is not black trim, that is navy. The lighting is awful in these photographs (florescent lighting will do that)
Considering that they confirmed right after the winter classic last year that they would be using them as thirds this year, I'm not surprised at all.
And the pens are not going to go back in time for primarys when they move into the arena guys- they may do a new retro themed design, but I doubt a straight up early 90's jersey set is in the works.
boring. but powder blue is sexified
There is a difference... i think
The colors are a bit slight, this jersey seems to be Baby blue, black and white, in the WC jersey there was some dark blue too.... wasn't there?
Found on the Pens Message Board

I'll say it again.... that is NOT black the coloring on the photo is off. It is definitely still navy
Even though it's the same as the Winter Classic jerseys, It's Very Nice.
The Highlights
-Powder Blue Days are Back
-Color Combination clashes well
-Everything you thought about the Winter Classic jersey
The Lowlights
-The yellow in the penguin logo
Kudos to the Penguins for reviving this jersey for the Winter Classic and now as the Third Jersey. 5/5
I wonder what team will decide to go vintage style after the third jerseys?
Calgary with the White Flaming C?
New Jersey in Christmas Colors?
Gets kind of difficult after that.
Damn! These jerseys have to be the nicest in NHL! They look great, my only complaint is I am not a Penquin fan, so I wont buy one.
It seems like all the Pittsburgh fans on the official site aren't fans of them bringing this back. Either they prefer keeping with the Pittsburgh City tradition of gold and black, or they are upset because they thought these were cool for one-time use in the Winter Classic only.
I personally like it! In my opinion, it is a color that actually relates to the nickname. Who doesn't think light blue--ice--when they think of Antarctica (the Penguin's natural habitat, for all you Americans out there!) Who ever has heard of a black and orange Duck, or a blue Leaf?
looks sharp!
I personally think the Pens should switch to these colors in 2010 when they go into the new building. I have lived in Pittsburgh my whole life and would not care about breaking away from the black and gold. Plus these are the original colors of the franchise so people shouldn't get upset if they do change. This has to be one of the top jerseys ever, right along with the North Stars and the Blackhawks. Great move by the Pens to bring this back.
@: the Duck Knight - It's better than the Crosby babycrap gold color they have. Nice job Penguins.
LOL. I'm gonna call it that from now on. Vegas Gold is so vague. Babycrap Gold is the new Mustard Bomb Yellow.
Question: I remember in the concept for the new Penguins store there was a White Body version with the powder blue yoke. Does anyone know if the team is actually selling or planning to sell this alternate-alternate jersey?
Best third jersey. The same one as in the Winter Classics. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Good job Pittsburgh.
Btw, it is NOT black. It's navy, but it looks like black. I checked the photo send by someone with PSP and it's navy.
Why did they wait so long to release a jersey that they already wore last year?
Loved it in the winter classic and still love it now! Shame I'm not a Penguins fan, otherwise I'd buy 4 right now...
Yes the jersey looks the same, but they can still alter the pants and socks, doubt they will though. Are they going to be wearing these permanately when they move into their new building?
The rest of the uniform will also look the same as the WC.
And, no, the idea of these ever becoming the first jersey is laughable. They're a nice variation and they represent the team's history - but they won the Cups with black and gold, (and, oh, yeah - Mario Lemieux still owns the team) and despite what various assorted Pittsburghers may say, the VAST majority of the town would riot if the Pens would ever be stupid enough to even consider it.
Which they wouldn't. (They pride themselves on "being in touch with the fanbase".)
I gotta say I agree with the love for the powder blue and white. Much like the San Diego Chargers new blues this uni is really nice looking. I do agree with the poster that said switch the yellow to the Vegas Gold in the triangle, i think that would look spot on. So now with having seen jerseys from approx. 14 of the 18 teams, still waiting on San Jose, Dallas, Ottawa, and LA, I gotta say i'm very happy at what we've seen. However I gotta give extra kudos to the teams that seem to have done so real design work, and some actual reinventing of thier image, such as the Bolts, Thrashers, Coyotes, and Bruins, and even the Blues changed things up, all be it using the same logo, just in a different way. So I'm excited to see the 4 remaining teams, and most excited to buy a new B's jerseys!!!!! Come on Bruins hurry it up, I need my # 81 Kessel or # 91 Savard or the MASTER OF ALL JERSYES the #8 CAM NEELY. My Joe Thornton Bruin jersey doesn't get worn anymore so it's time for a new one, if only i could change the 19 Joe Thornton into a 22 Shawn Thortnton.
Nope...
Guess I'm a "dedicated" BLACK-N-GOLD kinda fan.
Was hoping that they'd return to the "old/new" penguin logo that they had in the early/mid 90s!
THAT was a nice jersey!!
DAVE
The jersey was dropped in the movie Zach and Miri, right at the beginning. Elizabeth Banks wakes up wearing just the jersey and some socks.
Needless to say, I think that would be a much better promo shot than some players sitting on barstools.
the movie was entertaining, but not great, for those who are interested.
Ryan, please do not get a Cam Neely third jersey- jerseys that players never wore with their names in my and a lot of other people's minds makes you look like a tool. Get a player appropriate to the jersey- If you have a pens cup era jersey with Crosby on it, how does that make you look? What about one of the new ones with Barraso or something? It makes no sense, even if the player was great.
Nice find.

Very nice. I'm glad they didn't ruin it with piping like was rumoured.
I think they should wear the mario lemuiex era jerseys. With the triangular penguin. I think that would be much coooler
Is it me or are logos on the new 3rds huge? They all look larger than the regular jerseys...especially PHI.
One thing that I am interested to see is that they kept the authentic "ugly penguin", as I like to call him, who is, however, accurate through the Cup era (and was on the WC jerseys as such) - but if you look at any of the knockoff Winter Classics or even people's replica Cup-era jerseys, they always seem to have the current, much better-looking version of the skating penguin.
I'm personally grateful to the Pens for giving the little guy a modern-day overhaul (though I've always been curious about just when it happened - I seem to recall the original banners at the Arena have this modernized version, not the one the players were actually wearing on their sweater). Nevertheless, it's nice to see his ugly older brother in his proper historical place - and that includes the 'real gold' triangle (there was no Vegas gold in '68, folks).
I don't agree with using them again, and the it should have either been a one time thing, or change something up a bit more. If they did in fact change the outlining to black, then I'd be pretty pissed if I was someone who bought it last year. I'd like my jersey to be the newest if I thought it was when I bought it just a year before.
If the Penguins decide to switch to powder blue when moving to the new arena, I have a mixed opinion. I look at it two different ways:
1. Pretty much half the league has the colour blue somewhere on their logo or uniforms, so why change one of the few unique teams?
2. There are no teams with powder blue in their identity, so it could bring a new colour into the mix.
I don't know, I wouldn't mind it, but something wouldn't feel right about ditching the gold.
I think they should've used the old white home jersey with the Triangle Penguins logo or even brought back the white 90's Stanley Cup jerseys back even.
Leave these jerseys as something to remember the Winter Classic by.
The Howard Baldwin Bankruptcy triangle Pigeon logo SUCKS arse and should never ever be used again. The Penguins true logo is that of the Skating Penguin(It is the only Penguin logo that has EVER won Stanley Cups). Thank God Mario Lemieux buried the Pigeon logo a few years ago!!!!!!!
Couple comments:
1) As a Pens fan I think these are awesome, and am VERY glad they used the original yellow instead of the craptastic beige they use now... in fact my favorite part about this jersey might be that it marks the return of yellow. I'm also thrilled that there's no piping involved.
2) As has been stated several times, the trim is NOT black, it's still navy.
3) I'm getting a Malkin or Goligoski one for xmas.
4) Although I prefer the skating penguin, there's absolutely nothing wrong with the mid-late 90s "pigeon" logo. I always thought it was a cool design, and there's no arguing that as a whole package those jerseys were better than our primaries now. I wish they would've continued to include it as a shoulder patch.
I'm definitely getting me one. And whoever thinks the mid to late 90s Bank Pigeon logo should be brought back needs to stop smoking crack.
I'm glad Mario brought the old skating penguin back. It has attitude and I associate it with winning Stanley Cups!
