The Pittsburgh Penguins will be unveiling their new third jersey tonight. Keep an eye on their web site around 6 PM. I'm assuming they'll post pictures right away. And as soon as they do, I'll update Icethetics.
Speaking of the Pens, I don't know if any of you have seen Zack and Miri Make A Porno yet, but Kevin Smith delivers a brief uniform history for the team.
In the first scene, you see Elizabeth Banks wearing nothing but last year's blue Winter Classic sweater. Seth Rogen has a 1991-92 Stanley Cup championship banner hanging on his wall. And later in the movie, a couple of punk kids are wearing a couple of vintage sweaters. One is wearing the black Mario Lemieux-era jersey (from when they won the Cup) while the other has a 1970s-era blue and white one.
So that was kind of cool if you're a Pittsburgh fan — or if you just like hockey jerseys.
According to Damian Cristodero of the St. Pete Times, goalie Mike Smith will be changing his mask on a monthly basis. He said specifically he'll wear a special Christmas-themed mask next month.
"I think it's a great idea for goalies around the league," he said. "The artists are willing to do it and goaltenders have fun with different masks."
Cristodero writes, "The current mask commemorates Veterans' Day and Canada's Remembrance Day. Both are celebrated Tuesday. The United States flag and army boots are on one side. The Canadian flag is on the other. All 30 NHL logos adorn the brow."
So that's kind of cool. However, this constant mask-changing will sure make things tricky when it comes time to do the 2009 Goalie Mask Tournament. Maybe we'll just have a hold a single poll of all his masks from this season in a preliminary round.
I added some new, better pictures to the Chicago Blackhawks' third jersey photo gallery. I've done this with all the teams and will continue to do so whenever they wear their new alternate sweaters.
So make sure Third Jersey Central is one of your regular stops. I think it's easily the best feature of this new site.
One last thing. I've been getting a few Team Canada rebrands. Once I get the Concepts section of the site up and running, I'll build a gallery so you guys check them all out. And feel free to submit your own.

Hey Chris. I really like that idea about changing masks every month, although I'm not sure if that'll catch on with all goaltenders. It just seems too elaborate, and for some goaltenders, misrepresentation. I know guys like Marty Brodeur are classic, and only change their masks every 10 years. Just a thought, but who knows?
I disagree. I hate it when goalies change their masks all the time. It's like going to a plastic surgery once a month. Their mask is their face.
I thought of this site as soon as I saw those classic Pens jerseys in the movie. I noticed that they covered up the (very prominent) RBK logo on the back/neck area with an American flag. I think this looks great and would rather see the counrty's flag in this location than a RBK logo, but that'll never happen.
1) Pits need new jersey's, a third jersey that we have already seen isn't enough. The league is retarded not to spend more time in Teams with Superstar players and improving there jersey's. For example Ovechkin's jersey is by far the best in the league! But Canadian's don't want to buy it because they want to support there favorite Canadian player. I'm an Oilers fan but I still bought a Crosby jersey when he first came into the league. Now I'm looking to get an new EDGE jersey, but there regular ones suck and I don't want a Baby Powder Blue one. One of my friends bought one after last years winter classic, but I like the Yellow and Black ones of Lemieux's glory years in the mid-80's. If they can do an updated version of that, than you'd see a ton of Canadians buying them! But I guess they have enough money and they don't want to do that.
2) Tampa's 3rd Jersey (leaked) is great. I'm also a big LeCav'llllle fan! I never did like the lightning bolt logo and jersey. So the new thirds may be enough for me to buy one, I guess since there is no hope in seeing a decent Crosby jersey coming out for a while.
Goalies doing Masks every Month seems a little much. I think they all look like a big mess of idea's. I'd like to see simple, clean, team themed Goalie Masks that fans remember and identify with, like the vintage masks of the 80's and some from the 70's. I live in Vancouver and the mask of Roberto's that everyone likes the most, or should I say the fans show up to games wearing face paint like, or fake helmets that are painted, is the simple one he had two years ago when they were wearing the Rink logo as there third jersey, it was kind of cream color with the Rink logo on the forehead and a #1 on the chin. That proves to me that fans like the simple clean cut masks. His new one is almost as good, but I don't see fans using it on there signs and face painting etc. at the games.
3) The Blackhawks 3rd jersey's just look bad. Some jersey's just don't look good in black. The Hurricane's jersey is great, but this one and the PHX's black are really horrid looking! Black is over-used now, its not unique and it looks cheap when teams use it cause they have no other color to use. They should be a little more creative and at least use a mix of black with there primary away color, kind of like the Winter Classic Blackhawks jersey, now there is a sweat 3rd jersey. Just take that old logo off and add there regular one and you've got a winner.
is there a designer interested in creating a TEAM QUÉBEC jersey.
i know, we're not a country (yet), but québec as enough symbols to inspire a great jersey. maybe chris can add them to the 'olympics unbranded' section.

Saw Zach & Miri... after that opening scene where Elizabeth Banks wakes up in a Penguin sweater ( jersey ), I knew I would like the movie. Thats the only thing a hot girl needs to wear, a vintage sweater!! Porn & hockey... someone read my mind.
