The '09 All-Star Jerseys

I've got some great new photos of the 2009 All-Star Game jerseys. They were previously unveiled by the Canadiens — though in a picture that made making out details impossible — when they announced their Centennial plans.

The traditionalists out there will hate them, I can tell you that right now. The sleeves and even torso are asymmetrical. I think it's a refreshing change that we should get a chance to experience at least once a year. So the all-star game is perfect for that.

You'll notice there are three stars down the left sleeve of the East jersey and the right sleeve of the West jersey. On those stars are years: 1969, 1975 and 1993 — the last three times Montreal hosted the NHL All-Star Game. However, they did host the game eight times before '69. The first all-star game was in 1947 in Toronto.

These jerseys will have the player's number on the front the way last year's did — beneath the text. Oh, and while we're on last year's all-star jerseys, can I just say that these are infinitely better than those?

Maybe I'll get myself one of these red jerseys with Lecavalier on the back.

By the way, I made some updates to Third Jersey Central today. There's now a bonus section featuring news and photos for the Canadiens' Centennial jerseys, the 2009 Winter Classic jerseys and — you guessed it — the 2009 NHL All-Star Game jerseys. Be sure to check that out.

Those are sharp! A West Nash jersey would be slick.

Wow those are really awesome.

Nov 7 · 9:32 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterKoho

Nice design but the East jersey text works much better than the West. I feel the West text lacks enough contrast to be truly readable.

I really expected a traditional looking jersey for this game. Not a fan. They should have used the Habs' regular jerseys with a different logo.

Nov 7 · 9:38 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterNHLJeff

Sure Chris, traditionalists will dislike them... but the thing is, outside of the assymmetry, these look a lot more traditional than a lot of teams after Reebok had their way (St. Louis, Edmonton, Florida, etc) These don't seem to have any thin vertical piping making a bib or stripes that disappear for no reason. I'll reserve judgment 'til i see the horrific nontraditional socks.

Something I noticed: on the front of the jerseys, the East jersey has the stars on the west side of the logo, while the West jersey has the stars on the east side of the logo. Interesting..

Gag.

Nov 7 · 9:46 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterDrew Celestino

The players numbers will appear on the front of the jerseys, on the west side and east side below the respective wording/logo for each, as you can see in the special photo gallery for the Canadiens' jersey reveal (both picturing the number '09)...

These kinda remind me of the Columbus Blue Jackets jerseys... there aren't bad, and we'll all probably get used to them. Thanks for the scoop!

Nov 7 · 10:31 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterGreg

Gross! It looks like the Columbus Blue Jackets collided and merged their jerseys together with the Washington Capitals.

Nov 7 · 10:37 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterRye

No no no no! Why are they copying the Trashers? It works well with them, but that's it. We need two jerseys, not four.

Nov 7 · 10:45 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterDamme

Id say its more Capitals meet Atlanta Thrashers - since the Thrash home jersey is asymetrical. But with these, the one side way out weighs the other. Maybe would have been better to have all the color pushed to one side, and have the Starred Years on the other, rather than both on one side.

I do like them though. Not a fan of Basketball style front numbers though.

Also, I thought they would have used the Canadians colors, these seem much darker.

Nov 7 · 10:46 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterJeffy Beef Bone Deluxe

Hmm. Interesting. I kinda like them, but I kinda hate them.

If somebody were to buy me an East Staal I would not object though...

Nov 7 · 11:13 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterJeff P

I was expecting a more traditional, retro look since the game is in Montreal for the centennial. Ah well, I guess Gary has to target the kids.

Nov 7 · 11:19 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterMoosehabs

Why can't the East/West text be in French?

Nov 7 · 11:25 AM PST | Unregistered Commenterasnowballschance

These Jersey's SUCK!

Can't they keep them simple, but classy. The ones that were used in 2004. Check on link.

Those have been the only nice All-Stars jersey's since the 80's. More than 20 years of absolute CRAP!

Like I've said before the NHL marketers SUCK big Time!!!!!!!!!!

To bad, so sad, again.

Nov 7 · 11:29 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterCaptainK47

Hate them!

I hate the asymmetrical garbage like the Thrashers. Given the whole historical thing with 100 years and all, I was shocked the jerseys weren't more traditional, or even old school (albeit with the Reebok touch). But these are way too mainstream for this great event. Like the front and the logos, everything else is disappointing.

All-Star Jersey & All-Star Logo contests come January anyone?

Nov 7 · 12:04 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterJ

The design would have been perfect for last year in Atlanta....... a nice change for this season tho

Nov 7 · 12:09 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterJake

well... they were thinking outside of the box. i'll give them that.

Nov 7 · 12:27 PM PST | Unregistered Commenterjohnny griswold

I think last year's were way better than these ones.

Nov 7 · 12:33 PM PST | Unregistered Commenteranonymous

They remind me too much of the current Washington Capital's jerseys.
When I first saw them I thought it was for like the AHL. They certainly don't look like NHL material and they're so wrong for the celebration of 100 years of the Canadiens.
They don't even represent the conference's colours, unlike the 2006/2007 and 2007/2008 jerseys that used not only the colours of the conference, but the logo as well.

Nov 7 · 1:22 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterThe Bringer of Light

I think the logos are terrible but I like the jerseys enough--for an All-Star game that is

Nov 7 · 2:58 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterPK

off topic, but there was a Toyota Prius commercial where the guy says he won't shave until he needs a fillup. He goes Grizzly Adams by the end, but the thing I found interesting was that he was wearing last year's All Star West Jersey.
So, some people actually do buy these things.

Nov 7 · 3:09 PM PST | Unregistered Commenterwashington

I was fine with the asymmetrical part, but once I got to this:
"These jerseys will have the player's number on the front the way last year's did — beneath the text."

RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGE

Nov 7 · 3:13 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterMatt

I am going to echo the thoughts of many others on here:

Asymmetry sucks.

Nov 7 · 3:41 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterDrew J

I like 'em. Why go "traditional" all the time, the world is moving forward, not back people.

Nov 7 · 4:19 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterIan

I love 'em. Those are the first nice-looking all-star jerseys we've had in a while. The all-star game is the perfect setting for jerseys that are a little on the wild side (since the whole game ends up being kind of ridiculous anyway - LOL), and I think these are very attractive.

Nov 7 · 4:24 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterDaniel E

I love the logos, but the jerseys themselves are just awful. What a terrible design.

Also... Ales Hemsky, Shawn Horcoff, and Sheldon Souray are all on the NHL All-Star Ballot this year, so for all you Oilers fans out there, let's make sure to get those votes in (voting starts November 12th)!

Nov 7 · 4:25 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterDalen Coolio

Asymmetry Add more to a jersey, why not like it.

Nov 7 · 4:46 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterKoho

Barf.

These are garbage.

Last years were way better.

Who gives a crap about the last three years Montreal hosted the all-star game? That doesn't deserve to be on the jersey.

It'd be nice if the NHL could just make and market a half decent jersey for a change.

Nov 7 · 4:52 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterCCM

I kinda like them...but I wouldn't buy one cuz that's what they want you to do.....MWAHHHHAHAHA!

Nov 7 · 4:55 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterJames J.

I wouldn't buy one, but I like them a lot.

Nov 7 · 5:16 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterTHE DUCK KNIGHT

Other people are going to hate me... I kind of like these jerseys. The number-on-the-front thing may mess them up, but regardless of whether they suck or not, at least designers are trying new things (even if they are bad).

Nov 7 · 5:52 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterWingerdinger

Also, I don't see why players from 29 other teams have to wear a jersey that honors one team. The Kings weren't going to wear a patch to commemorate the Ducks winning the cup a couple seasons ago, and I don't think the Islanders are going to wear a patch to commemorate the Rangers winning the Cup in 1994.

Now, I know there is a clear difference between winning a Stanley Cup and hosting an All-Star Game. But I wouldn't like to wear a jersey for the Western Conference that honors another team, especially an Eastern Conference team.

Nov 7 · 6:06 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterKevin

It's bad when the league is pretty much encouraging teams to put numbers on the front center of their jersey. I'm starting to hate Reebok's ideas, but I still love the jersey designs in general. But I wanna knock out whoever's idea it was to ruin the whole point of a logo on a hockey jersey.

Nov 7 · 7:33 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterLeafers LP

all i can say is oh dear lord!

Nov 7 · 10:03 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterLance

The West jersey looks too much like a Blue Jackets jersey. And even though my team is in the Western Conference, if i had to choose one i like better, i would say the East one.

Nov 7 · 10:14 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterFlorio

they suck!!!

as for moving forward, there are false starts: see islanders fisherman, nike swift (any of them, they're all the same), and the vancouver flying V. are these "moving forward"?
this is no different.

asymmetry is something that doesn't belong in hockey, it is one of those things that just doesn't look right to anyone who knows their hockey jerseys.

the years have no purpose there, instead put a sleeve number! as a play-by-play commentator, those little numbers are SOOOOOOOOOOOO necessary

They could have found dozens of ways to salute montreal's past, but they chose not to. These jerseys are random hodgepodges of other barely ok jerseys. not to mention, can we have a LOGO instead of a wordmark? please?!

Nov 8 · 5:12 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterHockeyWeek

It's funny how 10 or 11 (if you count Tampa's) of the 18 3rd jerseys have horizontal stripes. It better piss Reebok off cause they're pissing us off with every attempt at re-creating the hockey jersey.

Nov 8 · 7:01 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterLeafers LP

these shirts are grossly nationalistic, and awfully English, for the all-star game's local audience. The NHL should use its own colours for this event, at the very least.

Nov 8 · 7:19 AM PST | Unregistered Commentermitchellirons

mitchellirons - Its going off the Montreal color scheme - which is red white and blue. Which is not something that always happens for All-Star games. When it was here in Minnesota it was Red and Wheat for away, and Green and Wheat for home. But last few years they have been going off the colors of the current Stanley cup Logo.

Nov 8 · 11:21 AM PST | Unregistered Commenterdave

Major suckage.

Nov 8 · 12:33 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterG-Man

Those are wicked, they look like Columbus jerseys, i would totally buy one

Nov 8 · 7:12 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterAndy

The West wordmark is really hard to read.
