Special Jersey Caps 35 Seasons

A week from Friday, the Washington Capitals will celebrate their 35th anniversary with a special one-game-only commemorative jersey.

The details of the big night — which is February 5 — were just released yesterday via the team's official web site. However, the release does not go into particulars with regard to the jersey itself. Only that it's red (probably meaning it's the regular sweater with a special patch).

Caps 35th Anniversary LogoThe Washington Capitals will be wearing a special, one-game-only set of red jerseys containing a unique 35th season commemorative patch when they take on the Atlanta Thrashers Friday, Feb. 5 at Verizon Center. Fans attending the game can leave the arena that night with their favorite Capitals player's one-of-a-kind, game-worn jersey.

It will be Game-Worn Jersey Night in Verizon Center, as MeiGray and the Capitals will be hosting a special exhibit at Section 119 in the concourse: 35 Seasons of Capitals' Game-Worn Jerseys.

On display will be jerseys worn throughout the years by the Caps, including jerseys worn during the team's inaugural 1974-75 NHL season, jerseys worn during the 10th anniversary and 20th anniversary seasons. There will be jerseys on display that were once worn by Bob Carpenter, Mike Gartner, Dale Hunter, Rod Langway, Scott Stevens and many more.

I imagine that is going to be one kick-ass display. If you've got tickets and a digital camera, we'd love to see what they have set up. And we'd be forever in your debt.

I plan to set up a jersey gallery in the Specialty Jerseys section over the weekend following the game if you're interested in seeing what it looks like. Speaking of which, let's start the speculation. What will this red jersey look like?

If the Caps are going for the "heritage" look, they don't have many options. They spent their first 20 years in the original red, white and blue and never really changed the jerseys. It's probably safe to assume that 1974 sweater with the white shoulder yokes will be making a one-time-only comeback  (however, let's hope they don't opt for white pants).

Or could they be planning something entirely different? You'll notice that 35th anniversary logo (above) contains only the secondary Weagle logo that we love so much. Could this special jersey be more of a tribute to the next 35 years? Perhaps hinting at a future where the wordmark is a thing of the past?

We'd love to hear some more theories. Post yours below.

I don't think that it's actually a new design. According to the article, it is "a special, one-game-only set of red jerseys containing a unique 35th season commemorative patch." I think that they're just normal home jerseys that will contain the 35th patch for only one night. That's just what I got out of the article.

Oh yeah, and the other evidence is: "Fans will be able to bid until the end of the game on the jerseys with the 35th commemorative season patch." If they were in fact special jerseys, you'd think that they would make a bigger deal about the jerseys, and not just the patch.

That's probably exactly what it's going to be Glen, but it's not as fun to speculate about.

Maybe they'll bust out the stars ( as in, the pants and jerseys with stars all over them) ?

Jan 28 · 10:07 AM PST | Unregistered Commenterjoelski V

Maybe they'll trot out those awesome white pants they had in their first season for that game?

Pretty sure it's just a patch. If I manage to get tickets I'll take some pics for you guys of the display. :)

Ew... white pants. Much like the "cooperalls", there's a reason they aren't around anymore.

Btw Chris, that jersey gallery... is that only gonna be for alternates and specialty jerseys? Or will it expand to ALL jerseys, regular home and away jerseys, going all the way back in the history of forever? And let the fans vote on all those designs. Kinda like the old NHLToL thing, but with jerseys, not just the logos.

Or to add to Joelski V's idea, perhaps their jerseys will be a non symmetrical American flag-esque jersey...white stars on the blue right sleeve, and red and white stripes on the rest? And our favorite Weagle in the center....

White pants! I'm all for it!

White pants pleeeeease. i know its goofy but it would still be awesome for a one night only thing

Am I the only one to just realize in looking at that patch that the bottom outline of the Weagle actually forms the dome of the Capitol Building???

It never popped so clearly as it does placed atop the straight lines of the #35...

Seriously though, did everybody else already notice that? (maybe the wrong place to ask, what with all the logo geeks)

They're going to just be the regular sweaters. Chris, I know you hate the wordmark, but Caps fans love it.

I hate to say it, but... Pictures of Ovechkin in white breezers would make for some great diaper jokes when i talk to my friends that are Caps fans.

Their history really is nothing to celebrate. The most notable thing in their rafters is a WNBA attendance banner. And that it's self is nothing to be proud of.

i dont understand the love for the weagle... I think the classic wordmark look works much better for the caps

Jan 28 · 6:58 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterGrinch

I also vastly prefer the wordmark.

The white pants were done away with after a special request was granted by the NHL. You see when they got wet they were rather revealing, get the picture? Many people did at the time. And justin if you look closer you will also see an image of a partial Washington monument. Since the weagle's inception it has been known to fans what the images represented. I prefer the wordmark to the eagle being raped by the capitol dome myself.

Poor Justin. Guy's been living under a rock. The head is an eagle, the wings form a W, the bottom is the Capitol building, and the blue/white neck transition is the Washington Monument. All in all, it makes for the second sickest logo ever. (NOTHING can trump the Hartford Whalers)

The 'weagle' not only has the capital dome, it also has an outline of the top of the Washington monument around the neck.

I dont know why everyone loves that secondary logo of the caps it is atrocious I prefer the wordmark

Jan 29 · 5:18 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterBrad

Yes Justin, we all noticed that :)

Although I never noticed the Washington Monument. Are you sure that's it? Just looks like a regular point to me.

Jan 29 · 5:49 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterKevin Y

I think the weagle is the best shoulder patch in the NHL right now. I don't like the wordmark, so lame, but I don't necessarily want to see the weagle placed front and center on the sweater. The secondary logo should be creative, playing off the primary logo without being corny. The weagle succeeds.

Jan 29 · 10:22 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterLeopard Seal

The Weagle is amazing. Has the capital dome, the washington monument as well as a simple W in there. It's one of the most ingenious logo's I have seen since the older Milwaukee Brewers logo with the ball and glove that is actually an M/B as well.

Jan 30 · 10:22 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterEd

I will have my digital SLR with me, and I'll bring the short lens so I can get shots of the exhibit, too.

@Brad - the Weagle is not the worst logo in hockey; that one has to go to the Buffalo Sabres' "angry cashew" logo (AKA the "Buffaslug". Unfortunately, I can't post an image, but we all know what it looks like... boy, howdy, is that thing ugly!
