Penguins Unveil WC Jersey!

Pittsburgh Penguins reveal 2011 Winter Classic sweater

The Pittsburgh Penguins officially unveiled their 2011 Winter Classic sweater today, according to the team's website.

Evgeni Malkin shows off new sweaterThey've posted a photo gallery featuring a few different shots of the new uniform, including the one above. As rumored, the sweater is a hybrid of past Pens jerseys. It's similar in design to the team's inaugural uniform from 1967 with the powder blue and navy inverted. The main difference being the addition of the original logo which was never before used on a jersey.

The design should be no surprise to Icethetics readers. It's almost exactly what I posted here earlier this month. It doesn't replace the the Penguins' first Winter Classic or the Blackhawks' WC/third jersey atop my personal favorites list, but I'm still a big fan.

It's a sharp look and almost has the feel of an "old-timey" wool hockey sweater. Don't be deceived, though, it's still a Reebok Edge jersey. But it's one of the better ones we've seen.

My only issue is the massive size of the waist stripes. Definitely think that could've been toned down a little. Way too close to the numbers on the back.

Otherwise a solid design effort and Pens fans should be pleased. It's a great new look and I hope they keep it around a while. The Penguins announced the jersey will also be worn later in the season after the Winter Classic, on Feb. 10 vs Los Angeles and Mar. 12 vs Montreal.

Now, your thoughts on the new threads?

They should be ashamed of themselves. They are playing in Heinz field. The only option is black and yellow. Or even White and Yellow. As a steelers fan I am upset.

Lets say it was a different stadium........I still dont like it. The numbers and letters are fugly. Too many strips, light blue, dark blue yellow and white?? smh.

awful.

Well said Tommy G, I am a relocated Cincinnati fan, so I hate everything to do with pittsburgh. but they should of went with the black and yellow instead of these. I have asked alot of people and no one likes them. horrible job pittsburgh, you get a second winter classic and you completely drop the ball.

Yawn.
I have a great idea. Put the Penguins in the Winter Classic AGAIN, but this time submit a 2nd grade collage project as the official jersey. Filthy.
Here's the solution to fixing the Winter Ho-Hum: 1 every other year. Maximum. Never 2 in the same year. Don't repeat teams. Very simple. Keep it exciting the way it's supposed to be, not another reason to drop an anvil on Bettman's head.

You know, I don't hate the design, i just don't like the colour combination. I think that that junior or minor league team that had the black and yellow version of this jersey that was posted a little while ago. I think that colour scheme is is alot more appropriate. and then maybe to spice it up a bit, use the 1995-2002 logo on there to spice things up.

eh... They're not bad. I still they should've gone with the diagonal; 'Pittsburgh" down the front though...

@ bavel pure
I've been a Pens fan since 1979 and I must ask why would you want anything associated with the "HOWARD BALDWIN" ownership group brought back (talking about that HIDEOUS Pigeon/Robo/Corporate logo). Jagoff had the nerve to change the logo after winning back to back Cups in '91/'92. I Hated that logo then and I still Hate that logo to this day, so glad Mario brought back the Skating Penguin logo.

weak

I like this but the bottom stripes are just too big.

Oct 30 · 8:29 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterThe "Wild Wing" Jersey

That's disgusting. What a poor excuse for a jersey. The fact that Pens fans will be shelling out tons of money for these disasters shows they don't know what a good jersey is. The only thing remotely good is the old school logo.

I think they look great. I like my hockey jerseys looking like hockey jerseys. Captain Obvious is always obvious.

Oct 30 · 4:05 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterKris

I still don't get why people like the skating pen logo it looks so silly the logo from 95-02 looks way better. I'm a ducks fan and everyone thinks the MD logo looks cartoonish but it looks real mean but the pens have a silly skating penguin and that's a great logo? The pens WC 2.0 jersey looks real weak like everyone says those stripes do not look good at all.

@ Mr. E
Because the Skating Penguin is the better logo. The Howard Baldwin Bankruptcy Pigeon/Robo/Corporate logo is horrible. If I can find it in my old Pittsburgh Press clippings, Mario Lemieux himself called it a Pigeon. My friends and I quit buying Pens merchandise (call it our little revolt, kinda like the die hard Islanders fans not buying season tics after the fugly Gortons Fisherman logo was introduced) when Baldwin introduced that thing! Yes it's a matter of personal opinion but Maybe, Maybe if it were introduced under different circumstances, I wouldn't hate it as much BUT the jagoff changed the uniforms/logo after the Skating Penguin logo was a part of BACK to BACK Stanley Cup victories in '91/'92, who the hell does that?

Oct 30 · 10:06 PM PDT | Unregistered Commenter91Pens92

Well there were in fact five stripes on the pens inaugural uniforms... they just swapped colors... if you go to nhluniforms.com you will see that the preportion of the striping is not off, either. The reason the striping is so close to the numbers is that they had to lower them in order to accomodate the nameplates, which they didn't have on the pens first jerseys.

Two words: Black and Yellow.

@91PENS92
I feel and understand what your saying and I would feel the same way but that aside I think the other pen logo looks sharp and classic not saying the skating pen logo isn't classic but looks real kiddish. Also, I'm seeing it as a ducks fan where the MD logo seems to be thought as cartoonish and such but not the skating penguin which I really don't get.

Oct 31 · 4:37 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterMr. E

Honestly, these jersey are absolutely hideous.

The marketing writes itself for a black and gold jersey in the Steelers stadium. Just more stupid decisions by Penguins management.

No worries though, they'll get the chance to actually make a good looking Winter Classic jersey again in just 3 short years, cuz we all know the Pens are the only reason the NHL even has the Winter Classic apparently... 2 out of the 4 they get in... completely ridiculous.

The logo and numbers are badass, no doubt about that, The stripes coulda worked wonderfully if they separated them. There are just too many stripes goin on in that uniform.

But overall they played it safe, kept it simple, the baby blue on the outline of the numbers is a real nice touch on the navy.

Out of all the Winter Classic Uniforms here's how I rate em all

1) 08 Buffalo Sabres
2) 09 Detroit Red Wings
3) 08 Pittsburgh Penguins
4) 11 Pittsburgh Penguins
5) 10 Boston Bruins
6) 09 Chicago Blackhawks
7) 11 Washington Capitals
8) 10 Philadelphia Flyers.

What were they thinking! They already went back to this era in their last Winter Classic. They should have gone for a more retro (as opposed to vintage) look.

Nov 6 · 7:45 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterRobm

I like them. Yes they went overboard with the striping, 3 waist stripes instead of 5 would have looked great, but other than that I think they are really good. I like the navy blue better than the baby blue. Awesome logo too. The penguin with the scarf just shouts classic. Definitely getting one of these jersey, and can't wait for the WC.

Everyone's crying about the stripe overkill...... but they took the exact striping from the inaugural season.
As well as the first logo, which never made it onto a jersey. The numbers I like too, but if they just subtracted one strip from the hem, the # wouldn't be so close to bottom! Other than that, I think the Pens are 2 for 2 in nailing a nice WC jersey.
Just don't want to see them in this game for a long time........ get over it Bettman.
