Blue Jackets Plan Third Jersey

The Columbus Blue Jackets will launch a brand new third jersey this November, according to the Columbus Dispatch. Jackets beat writer Aaron Portzline revealed this information in his latest posting on Puck-Rakers Blog this evening.

Here is what Portzline had to say on the subject:

Reebok has been handed design ideas by the Blue Jackets regarding the third sweater, to be unveiled next season. The club expects to get a prototype back from the sporting goods' supplier shortly. Local retailers have already been asked to submit orders.

The Dispatch has been told by a high-ranking front-office member that the new duds will be unveiled next November.

One interesting thing in this article is the first line. Apparently, the team is submitting ideas to Reebok and not the other way around as some have surmised. If we can get our hands on pictures of any of these prototype jerseys, you can count on Icethetics to share them with the world.

The Blue Jackets were rumored to be launching an alternate jersey to celebrate their 10th NHL season. This now appears to be confirmed. The last time the Jackets debuted a third jersey was 2003. It was used until 2007 when the logo featured on it became the team's primary mark.

Thanks to everyone who sent in the link!

By the way, I would've posted this sooner, but I couldn't turn away from the Latvia-Czech Republic game. Those Latvians sure put on a good show. I actually wondered for a little while if they were going to pull off the upset.

That game was one of the best of the the Olympic hockey tournament so far. I'm having trouble deciding which is the better goaltending performance: Edgars Makalskis versus the Czech Republic or Ryan Miller versus Canada. Drama is gooooood!

To the topic at hand, now... I have mixed thoughts about this. I mean sure, the Jackets have great uniforms, but I'm worried about what they'll do. Hopefully nothing too psychotic.

Also, the Norwegians tied their game against Slovakia with less than a second left in the second period. Not sure it would be as big an upsed as Latvia almost got, but still...

Would've been great to see Latvia upset the Czech Republic. Nonetheless, they played a great game in what might've been the most important in country's history...

.....now, any idea what to expect from the Blue Jackets third? They HAVE to have a blue jersey.... it's in the freaking name. Anything else would be... "blasphemy"? But really, what more can they do? The only thing I can think of is to make red more prominent, somewhere between a secondary color and accent color, but I really can't think of much that they can do.

Any ideas? Concept art perhaps?

I'm thinking of their old 2nd home with the stars down the side, myself.

I'm hoping for a return of their mascot/bee guy. I mean he was on the original jersey... Or the Civil War cap on the USHL team's jersey would be cool

I hope it's not too drastic. i'm scared they'll bring back the insect holding the hockey stick.

I bet they use that cap logo that's on Mason's mask/

I hope they use the union cap logo -- currently an alternate logo on the primary jersey -- and follow a blue civil war jacket look -- updated, but classy.

Gotta go with the Union cap. This is exciting news!

No kidding, the Latvians almost won it when it almost bounced of Vokun and in. It was truly a great game.

It needs to be the word Columbus diagonally down the front, much like the New York Rangers. Ive seen them sell hooded sweatshirts around Columbus like that and I think it looks really good.

Korrey: ARE YOU CRAZY????

The "diagonal" sweater has been done by several teams (rangers, avs)-- while a traditional hockey look, I hope they can be more creative than that. It needs to scream "Union Soldier". As far as Stinger goes -- I wish they would zap him and replace him with a character such as "Sarge" or "Major Pain".
