Ducks Detail 3rd Jersey Debut
The Anaheim Ducks have officially confirmed that their new alternate uniform will be unveiled when they hit the ice on November 26.
The third jersey announcement was made on Wednesday via the team's website. The new sweater will be worn 14 more times during the season following the game against the Blackhawks. For the record, the Ducks will wear their regular home jersey during warm-ups so the new uni truly won't be seen until game time.
A general description of the new jersey design was included in the release.
“After introducing a new name, logo and colors to our fans four years ago, we felt it important to give our original look due time to establish itself in the market,” said Ducks Vice President of Sales and Marketing Bob Wagner. “At this point, we’re excited to introduce an additional look for the team in 2010-11, one we feel confident our fans will embrace.”
Since the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim became the Anaheim Ducks on June 22, 2006, the club has worn a jersey with a color palette of black and metallic gold with orange accents as a metaphorical link to Orange County. The primary logo emblazoned across the front of the jersey is a strong typographic mark anchored by a stylized “D” that echoes the image of a duck’s footprint.
The third jersey will put an alternative spin on the traditional colors and logo, also paying homage to the club’s history.
Ha! You mean the "strong typographic mark" that Icethetics readers just can't get enough of? That one? Funny. But I digress.
Paying homage the club's history? Likely a popular choice. Who thinks Wild Wing is making his glorious return? I still have that old jersey in my closet. But while a Disney character is unlikely on the new uniforms, it's cool to see the owners are willing to revisit that chapter.
The last line of the pull quote above makes my head spin, though. An "alternative spin" on the "traditional" colors and logo? Is this to say jade and purple could be as much in the Ducks' future as in their past? Or maybe a Duck-shaped goalie mask incorporating the orange and gold?
Whatever it is, I'm excited to see it. It's just too bad we have to wait three months. In the meantime, got any concept ideas? Email them my way.
Thanks to all of you who sent in this story today while I was busy working.

I actually kinda liked Wild Wing... as a Kings fan, that's like sacrilege.
I was never a fan of the alternate they had before the change prior to the 06-07 season. That black with the eggplant striping. I understand it was popular, but the colors are too dark, dull, and boring. The coloring just didn't look good (the Kings knew how to make purple and black look right).
And not only that... but they can't use the same colors as the Kings. That's just not right.
The Mighty Ducks in their short history before being renamed, have amassed a huge assortment of jerseys. Some seasons they juggled two alternates.
I hope the duckbill goalie mask makes a return in some form. The wordmark 3rd jersey or the Wild Wing monstrosity would be a step back.
Also, an orange jersey would look awesome.
Homage to their past? Doesn't ring right with me.
Never saw the Mighty Ducks as a "real" team, but my view on them has changed slightly as they became just "the Ducks". Okay if they chose to return to the colours of the MIghty Ducks, (even thou they are hideous) but I hope they won't bring the Wild Wing back.
Seems like that's exactly what they are going to do thou. He stated that they'd still be using the current colourscheme but with a twist. Hopefully this means orange is dominating, as there are to many black dresses in the NHL.
I always see the "Anaheim mystery third jersey" link, but what about an older mystery? Why DID the (Mighty) Ducks incorporate the black gear (helmet, pants 7 gloves) during the 95-96 season?
I was on the equipment staff at the time and no onever explained that to me. I know we had some difficulty getting a consistent 'eggplant' color from helmet manufacturers (some came out a 'fabulous' shade of light purple - yeah I'm talking to you Cooper!)
I'm a big an of using the current colors on a logo based on the original disney design. Honestly, it was solid logo. You knew it was a hockey team named the Ducks. It was classy, simple, and appropriate. I'm not saying it was perfect by any stretch, but it was about a million times better than their wordmark and even the duck foot D by itself.
And it was better than anything the Canucks or Sabres have ever worn too. Also better than the Lightning and the old Bluejackets logos.
I was happy to see eggplant and teal go away. While I enjoyed having a bright scheme, it was almost like the Ducks decided to take from the Kings and Sharks when choosing their colors. Since all three are in Cali, I didn't care for that.
I think that by "traditional" colours and logo they probably mean "what's currently being used." As much as I'd love to see eggplant and jade make a return, I doubt it's going to happen anytime soon.
I have a feeling the webfoot D will take centre stage on this jersey, but if they're "paying tribute" to the franchise's history, as they say, we could be seeing the duck mask on the shoulders. As a Ducks fan, I can't wait to see it.
Guest appearance by Emilio Estévez.
Something to keep in mind, re Wild Wing: him returning to the jersey isn't out of the question. Since they wiped him off the jersey, he has still remained the team's mascot. Even though it's "Disney" property, they obviously don't have any problem with him still being a part of the team.
Please make it look cool, please make it look cool, please make it look cool. I'm afraid it's just going to look really bad, and when they say retro, the only cool retro thing they did was the black jersey with the purple Anaheim on it, which was the most popular alternate. My favorite was the NIke one from 98-99, where the home was white but it had the multi-colored sleeves. If Kariya comes back, I'm dusting that thing off!
I hope they use the old cursive wordmark. It was awesome.
I have b a Ducks fan since my first game i went to (hich was back in kindergarden for me bck in 99). As much as i would love to see the old script logo i say put the new colors on the old jersey and logo that would ba a hit in anaheim.
I liked the goalie masked duck logo why not have an orange jersey? Too many black ones. Herte's my idea of what they should do. Have the Masked Duck logo white with black and orange detailing/outlining. Then in their (gold/bronze) have Anaheim arched above the logo and for the "A" in Anaheim rotate the web-foot "D" on the regular logo and make it a web-foot A. How does that sound???
Let's get something straight - WIld Wing and the old Ducks logo are not property of Disney - all that stuff was part of the sale of the team. The Ducks can use anything they want from 1993 onwards in their new jersey design.
