Ottawa to Host 2012 All-Stars
The Ottawa Senators will host the 59th NHL All-Star Game on Jan. 29, 2012, the league announced today.
No time was wasted in unveiling the new logo for the event. It features the Peace Tower, which was a key element in the original Senators' logo, which was replaced by the time the team took the ice in 1992.
It will be the first time hosting All-Star festivities for Canada's capital city. All-Star Weekend will take place Jan. 28-29 at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa.
Some other bits of information that might be of interest: This will be the fourth consecutive All-Star Game hosted by an Eastern Conference team. But to be fair, the East hosted only one game between 2001 and 2007, and that was in South Florida in 2003. (Also '05 and '06 had no All-Star games.)
Also, Tthe 2011-12 season marks the Sens' 20th anniversary. And while it is Ottawa's first time hosting the All-Star weekend, they did host the NHL Entry Drafts in 2005 and 2008.
By the way, it took the league almost four months to give up the logo for this year's All-Star Game after the Hurricanes were announced as host in April. This one we got the same day. Yet we're still waiting just to see the uniforms for the 2011 All-Star Game. Something's out of order here.

very sharp. i like it
good logo very solid
very cool, i like that it has 11 small black stars and the one red star making for 12 small stars on the interior of the logo. looks like they might have actually taken their time on creating this one unlike the carolina one.
Logo looks very good! Only complaint is that the NHL logo seems to be slapped on there in an awkward place. They should have placed it under "OTTAWA" at the bottom of the logo. Other than that it looks great
Is there a significance to there being 12 stars? Personally, I would have loved to have seen the roman laurel leaves (on the rim of the shield on their main logo) rather than stars around the perimeter of the logo. Otherwise, good logo.
Hmmm - 12 stars - 12 provinces - Ottawa being the capital......
Nev: 12 stars, 2012?
I dig the logo though. As for the timing, the probably decided the 2011 game and the 2012 game at the same time, and had to scramble to make a logo for the Canes, since the Canes were scheduled for the 2012 game, but got the '11 game due to the Yotes getting the game stripped due to the ownership uncertainty. The Ottawa logo would have been developed at the same time, but they were able to release it with the later announcement.
But yeah, I have no complaints about the logo whatsoever, other then the NHL logo, but that's pretty awkward in anything it's on, due to it being a logo of it's own and not having been designed to be an element within a logo. Plenty of good reasons for using the real logo, but it does look a little awkward.
The logo should have had cars stuck in traffic on the way out to Kanata...
10 provinces, of which Ottawa is the capital of none (Nation's capital, not a provincial capital). It's also worth noting the Rideau Canal is subtly included just above the "****OTTAWA****" mark. And pretty clever how the roof of the tower forms the top point of the star
[Insert praise]
Seriously though.
Well balanced, thoughtful and utilizes team colours.
...Let's just hope they don't drop the ball with the Jerseys and we're good to go.
LOL JOHN D, take the backroads to Scotiabank Place, works for me.
I love the logo, i dont quite see what ADAM is talking about with the Rideau Canal reference...
Definately Agree with PUNZAK. The shield would look better at the bottom.
Kinda disappointed that there's no Canada flag on the Peace tower tho, i suppose it is a binational league.
Great logo. Extremely sharp. Great job by Adam for pointing out the Rideau Canal and the fact that Canada has 10 provinces, not 12 (+ 3 territories)
Where is a Maple Leaf on the logo to remind Bettman, and the American public in general, that our nation (Canada) actually exists?
I'm also going to point out how awesome this will look painted centre ice.
...But frankly, I'm not a fan of the cropped Ottawa logo currently, so anything would be an upgrade.
Yeah, my bad - I counted the Maritimes altogether and got the 12 instead of the 13. Trust me - I am embarrassed...a geography geek like me should know better! But with the main logo being a star, that does make 13 overall stars...so it still makes sense the 13 stands for the 10 provinces and 3 territories. With Ottawa being the capital - the 13 for 13 makes even more sense.
Peter, the year of the allstar game will also be the 20th anniversary of the Sens. Chances are, the 20th anniversary logo will adorn center ice. Perhaps they could do both logos (ala montreal on either side of the center red line) or have the allstar logo up until the game is played, then switch to the 20th for the remainder of the season. Regardless, I hope that they do NOT put an allstar logo patch on the jersey. Keep it on the helmet. There's barely enough room for the A and C as is. Just look at how crowded the CHL jerseys are. we dont need that.
