Avery Leaks Rangers Third

Rangers third revealedNew York Rangers forward Sean Avery has taken it upon himself to give us a sneak peek at his team's new third jersey.

This image was posted today on Avery's website. Looks like a pre-release photo shoot with the new alternate sweater — obviously.

Having gotten an early look at it myself, I can say that this is in fact the extra uniform the Rangers will have on hand for the 2010-11 season. You can see a patch there on the right shoulder. It's most likely the 85th anniversary logo.

I'm not sure when the team plans to hold an official unveiling for the third. They may just wait until November, like Anaheim. Or they may do it sooner. Either way, you've already gotten a chance to see it for yourself.

I'm a big fan of the color scheme, but it's no secret that personally, I would've rather seen them go with with the Lady Liberty logo from the mid-90s. What do you guys think? Hit or miss?

Yeah, the Lady Liberty logo would've been a better option. This jersey is too similar to the current home jersey. Boo.

I actually really like it.

Sep 16 · 4:20 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterInjection

thats pretty sweet. the stripping is very nice. might have been better if "New York" wasnt in the "Ariel Narrow" font though.

Sep 16 · 4:22 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterJeff

I gotta say a miss by the Rangers on this one. The Lady Liberty Third jersey was an iconic jersey and showed that the third jersey program can work and be successful, there was even a white version of it for a season or so. I can understand that they want to honor the 85th anniversary with a throwback as many teams are doing (i.e. Buffalo, Vancouver, and Los Angeles) but it just feels like they dropped the ball on this one.

it's decent, nothing particularly special

Sep 16 · 4:31 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterGrinch

i am a die hard rangers fan and i actually really like this one. they could definately have done something better. its a little plain, maybe some kind of shoulder yoke would have been nice but i like the vintage white. i would love to see lady liberty come off the practice jerseys and into games but this jersey is a nice third

Sep 16 · 4:36 PM PDT | Unregistered Commentermike

I like it. As a Rangers fan, I've always hated the liberty jerseys. Lady Liberty is closer to NJ, anyway...!

Sep 16 · 4:38 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterJ

This man looks... enthused.

Sep 16 · 4:51 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterPeter

As a die-hard Rangers fan, and one who always thought the white Liberty jersey was better than the dark blue one... AND a person who just loves retro style jerseys: I love it. Period.

Sep 16 · 4:57 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterFranco

Too similar to their ahl affiliate in my opinion. Lady liberty wouldve been way better

Sep 16 · 5:00 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterStefano

It's a lot better than I was expecting. The collar and navy blue make all the difference. I too would have liked to see the Lady Liberty logo used as well, maybe even altered a bit to give it an art deco / retro feel, but for a wordmark jersey (which I typically can't stand), it's about as good as it gets.

Sep 16 · 5:09 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterV

Definite Hit!!

looks good.

lady liberty would have been really good too though. :P

Sep 16 · 5:22 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterMe

MISS, FAIL.. whatever. I get it but at the same time I don't. I get teams like me sabres using a script as the third for a first time etc. ..BUT NY only uses boring ass script already. If it was a 1 game thing it would be fine, but like you said. They should have used lady or at least the shield logo from the late 70's early 80's

Sep 16 · 5:23 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterReadBetweenTheLines

The Liberty ones were great. But from the NHL's point of view, they want to make money. Which do you think will sell more, the one they used until a few years ago or a brand new one?

Sep 16 · 5:34 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterSean

This is an amazing looking sweater. It's extremely clean and I can't think of a single criticism (outside of the hokey reebok edge collar that looks terrible for everyone) I always disliked the lady liberty because it primarily used a color outside of the Rangers pallet in the name of being trendy. Original six teams don't need to be trendy.

Sep 16 · 5:35 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterEricRomain

There's nothing wrong with it. In fact, it is very similar to the jersey they wore for select games during the 1991-2 NHL 75th anniversary season. Very nice.

Sep 16 · 5:50 PM PDT | Unregistered Commenterjrzman

hate it. hate everything that has to do with the rangers. yeah i'm still bitter from '94.

Sep 16 · 5:53 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterConnor Hanley

I love it! I've always wanted the Rangers to bring back the jerseys that say New York on it, they went above and beyond that and made an amazing third by combining two classic Ranger jerseys. I loved the Statue of Liberty jersey, but this is by far their best third jersey. By far New York is the greatest city in the world

Sep 16 · 6:05 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterJoseph

It's not bad... yes, we'd all prefer the Lady Liberty logo, but this one does use the same shade of blue as that jersey.

It's different enough from the regular (because of the color), and looks very vintage. And it looks very similar to "USA, USA!" which, considering it's New York (where, of course, the "USA, USA" chant began at Lake Placid), fits very well.

A- (only because it's not Lady Liberty).

Sep 16 · 6:07 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterKevin Y

It's cool. It's a good alternate jersey for the anniversary year. If you haven't noticed, it's the same color scheme as the "Lady Liberty" jersey. They may be setting themselves up for it.

Sep 16 · 6:18 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterTyler J

hit! and this is coming from a die hard islanders fan.

Sep 16 · 6:22 PM PDT | Unregistered Commenterb-ern

For it's purpose, this counts as a hit.
I'm not impressed, but so long as we're in context of a 'throwback/make it modern/let's use ivory instead of white so it looks dirty; celebratory anniversary sweater" - then yes, we have accomplished that.

There really is no immediate need to try anything new and different if you're going to spend all season wistfully calling on the good ol' days; ESPECIALLY when the Rangers looks has survived the test of time.

I have no doubt that the club will eventually introduce a new version of the Lady Liberty jersey; in time.

Sep 16 · 6:22 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterMinh

I never liked lady liberty. I think this is about as good as it gets when it comes to Rangers' third jerseys.

Sep 16 · 6:30 PM PDT | Unregistered Commenterlarry

I feel the same as alot of other people here. It looks like a good jersey design as far as stripes and colors. But the Liberty logo on the front would have knocked the entire look out of the park. Statue of liberty is synonymes with NYC regaurdless of wether its actuall closer to NJ. Give the rangers an actual logo and use the lettering as alternates.
It should be: New 3rd jersey with Liberty logo as home jersey, white "NEW YORK" as away jersey, and blue "NEW YORK" as alternate. just my opinion.

Sep 16 · 6:52 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterPunzak

Good thought by Tyler J. Maybe next year they will just switch the NEW YORK with the Liberty logo.

Sep 16 · 6:54 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterPunzak

classy

Sep 16 · 7:27 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterRoF Hockey

Simple fix, Lady Liberty logo should be on the shoulder. Done deal.

Sep 16 · 7:30 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterDave

Minh, I'm glad to see someone else take issue with this whole faux-aging off-white epidemic that's spreading through the hockey world of late! All I've seen of these new ivory/cream/sand/dirty-looking-crap jerseys is that they take what in most cases are a perfectly sharp design, and dull the crap out of them by making them look dirty. Seriously, somebody get these people a case of Clorox already!!! ARRRGH!!!

I said it before, and I'm sayin' it again - faux-aging is the new acid-wash.

Now that I've gotten that off my chest... overall, it's not bad for a throwback-inspired design... personally, I'd prefer to see it for just one season, though.

And, Sean? Your argument is flawed. Since Edge is evidently here to stay (for better or for worse), it would mean that any new Liberty jersey would be exactly that - new. Just because the logo's the same doesn't mean the jersey itself wouldn't be different than the pre-Edge version - in fact, it most likely would have to be different, because of the Edge system. And it should be pretty clear that there are plenty of Rangers fans who would love the opportunity to snatch up a new Liberty jersey, possibly even with their favorite current player on it.

Sep 16 · 7:37 PM PDT | Unregistered Commenterkyojikasshu

def disappointed that they didnt bring back lady liberty. BUT i really really like this jersey. its simple like the other jerseys they have and i love the color scheme and font. i plan on purchasing this for sure

Sep 16 · 7:50 PM PDT | Unregistered Commenterjoe

I am with you on this Chris (well sort of). The colour scheme and striping and everything is absolutely fantastic. However, I would like to a logo on this. This is where my opinion differs from yours though. I don't like the Lady Liberty logo so much. But really, even that would be better than just text.

Sep 16 · 7:52 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterNathan

Pretty much exactly what I expected based on your suggestions, Chris. It's the 1940 jersey (and font) in the navy blue of 1997 with the 1983 "New York" across the front instead of "Rangers". It's a three-way throwback, and it's very subtle... Well done to whoever designed this! I want to see the back! I will bet that the letters will NOT be arched, like the Turn Back The Clock jerseys of 1992 (in fact, I'll bet that's exactly what the back will look like), with block font numbers (which the sleeve numbers suggest); if any difference, the numbers may be slightly narrower.

Leave it to Avery to steal the thunder...

Sep 16 · 7:55 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterDallas Hicks

meh, looks just like the home jersey. be creative with the third jersey. if it sucks you can always do a new one next year

Sep 16 · 9:06 PM PDT | Unregistered Commenterbickleton wigglesworth III

I can't stand when people say they would prefer the lady liberty logo -- it was done simply for the 2k factor. Don't re-implement something into the league that left for a reason. That would be like the Flyers bringing back their beveled/embossed logo. They're actually another perfect example, look at their new set of home/road jerseys.

This New York jersey is just perfect. It has a beautiful vintage colour palette of that really dark, rich blue, the worn out red and of course the vintage cream. Looks awesome — almost like something they'd wear at a Winter Classic game in Yankee Stadium.

Nice job on it, can't wait to see it in action! And better pics of course.

Sep 16 · 9:20 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterBrendan

Im really upset with current 3rd jerseys in the NHL. I think they should be more outside the box seeing as they will only be worn a few times. Teams should try something bold and unique. The rangers 3rd is very boring. Who cares about a jersey with the words New York across it (yawn). 3rd jerseys in the 90s were great. Many were ugly but at least they were memorable and unique (predators 3rd, bruins yellow 3rd, etc)

Sep 16 · 9:24 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterJeff C

As a die-hard traditionalist when it comes to jerseys, I always disliked the Liberty jersey. Teams that have classic images and styles should maintain their heritage and the Liberty jersey was a forced modernization and re-branding of an organization that did not need it. The Yankees, while hated by most, have stuck to their traditional look while all other teams have done some sort of changes to their uniform styles. I know the Rangers have not always had this look, but for the most part (aside from the Liberty uniforms), they have stuck to traditional looks, and this anniversary edition uniform is right on the money for me. I would have liked to see a more royal blue, but overall, much better than I could have expected. Can't wait to buy one!

Sep 16 · 9:38 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterSolidBlue94

Pretty much toeing the line here - prefer Liberty, but I like this color scheme. Oh well, it coulda been worse.

Side note: Looks like Sean Avery is trying to make the "Falling Down" (psycho Michael Douglas movie) en vogue this year. =D

Sep 16 · 9:46 PM PDT | Unregistered Commenterdownruplyb

The jersey's fine...would look nice if the Rangers decided to wear "NEW YORK" on the road and "RANGERS" on the home jerseys (kind of like how baseball teams do it). But it's a miss, and a complete miss, because the team with the best or close to the best logo in the sport failed to use it. If you can use a diamond over a cubic zirconia, you don't use the cubic zirconia, you use the diamond. The Rangers failed to do that, and, despite producing a fine-looking jersey, they failed because they had something of far-superior quality and failed to use it. It's an F.

Sep 16 · 9:52 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterDrew

That is a massive WIN in my eyes. As a rangers fan I was a little worried, but that is awesome!

Sep 16 · 11:29 PM PDT | Unregistered Commenterleggett84

Like it.

Sep 17 · 12:35 AM PDT | Unregistered Commenterbreaktheice

I'm hoping this is just for this season being an anniversary year.

I LOVED the Liberty jerseys. Some of my favorite jerseys of all time, I own a white and blue version. They use the Liberty logo quite a bit and alot of goalies use it on their helment too.

I really hope in the near future we will see the logo make a comeback on to third jerseys, it really was amazing.

Sep 17 · 2:14 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterMatt

Great jersey! I like this much more than their actual royal blue home kits. I thought Lady Liberty was sort of neat back in the day and because of it, we saw the possibilities for 3rds to come alive... However, since the Rangers are a original six team, it's better to go looking deep into history for inspiration and that is obviously something they did. Good job NYR! A DEF HIT!

Sep 17 · 2:19 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterJimbo

It's probably safe to say that 3rd jerseys exist primarily to move merchandise. More jerseys, more logos, more merchandising options. Which is fine, if I want a jerseys and don't like what's out there, just wait a year or two and they'll come up with something I like better. The thirds were originally the "wild" designs, then a lot of teams went with the wild designs as their primaries and now the thirds are largely the more traditional ones.

I'm a traditionalist and I simply don't understand all the love for Lady Liberty. What does it have to do with "Rangers"? At least "Buffalo Sabres" has "buffalo" in it. Anyway, I like this because it's a VERY traditional design, but I think the Rangers regular home blues are the best they've ever had so why have a blue alternate? If only they'd fix the weird angle of the text they've had since the Reebok edge cut came along.

Sep 17 · 5:40 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterGregg

I love it! Think it's really clean and certainly has a "feel" to it...

Sep 17 · 5:54 AM PDT | Unregistered Commenterpk

As a Rangers fan, I'm dissapointed by the lack of originality but at least it looks good.

Sep 17 · 6:10 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterIan K

"I feel the same as alot of other people here. It looks like a good jersey design as far as stripes and colors. But the Liberty logo on the front would have knocked the entire look out of the park. It should be: New 3rd jersey with Liberty logo as home jersey, white "NEW YORK" as away jersey, and blue "NEW YORK" as alternate. just my opinion." Almost agree 100%. The "Rangers" text jersey should ALWAYS be the primary home. It's tradition is amazing; the jersey is a classic and has stood the test of time. The away jersey should have "New York" text. And the third should be Lady Liberty. Lady Liberty should be the shoulder patch on the home & away too.
I like this jersey design a lot, other than the stupid off white. The stripes are classy and the white collar works. No doubt in my mind Lady Liberty would look perfect on this. Put her up front and I'd pick this up, despite the fact that I'm not a Rangers fan. Cater to your fans first (it seems like a good number of Rangers fans want Lady Liberty back) and try to get a few more sales with nonfans like me.
As it is, this jersey is in the upper half of recent thirds. Nothing spectacular, but points for using a different color scheme & pattern (unlike Vancouver). It's clean and classy. B

Sep 17 · 6:28 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterAdamEdg

i think it's quite nice. i really like the dark colors and nice to see what looks to be more of a true white where they could've easily gone for the cream, off-white vintage which is all too quickly playing out.
Or maybe my eyes are fooling me and it is a cream as others have said. If that's the case, I'd like it more if it's bright white.

Sep 17 · 6:45 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterJ3

The font style is to basic. Looks like a first jersey from the 1930's. Question would be what would the name plate look like as the Rangers have been using the drop shadow and arch for years. From the look at the numbers that would be gone; it has been a staple on the Rangers uniform. Looks like a department store knock-off.

Sep 17 · 6:50 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterDennis

I agree with most, i like the colors, but the "New York" is a little lame. I'm not a big fan of the Lady Liberty logo either. Why don't the rags put their Primary logo on it. That might look pretty good.

I also agree with Jeff C about the state of third jerseys. Lets get a little more creative and have some fun with the jerseys. You don't have to wear them a lot just every know and then. Some teams wear their thirds just as much as their home jerseys, that's too much.

We should def create a jerseys category for thirds from the 90's. You already have the Lightning, what about the Coyotes, Bruins, Mighty Ducks, Blues, Kings, those were some wild jerseys lol

Sep 17 · 7:26 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterRich

Snooze

What a boring uniform. Does Reebok just enjoying doing the exact opposite of what the consumer wants?

Sep 17 · 7:47 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterBrianB23

This option combines colors & lettering from throughout the 85 year history. I feel the Lady Liberty logo, the silver & lettering are a bit too contemporary. This uses the navy, the bold presence of red & classic lettering to identify the team. I'm buying.
