Sabres "Leak" Debunked

Time again to debunk another Sabres rumor. And this was a good one.

Looks like over the weekend, an image started spreading, as these things do. It was believed to show the Buffalo Sabres' new road jersey, unlocked in someone's copy of NHL 11 from EA Sports. In an effort to keep Icethetics readers a step ahead of everyone else, I quickly got on Twitter and let you know it was a fake.

By the way, if you want to see the image, you have to click here. If I display it here in the post, I worry some visitors won't bother reading the text and make inaccurate assumptions.

How do I know it was fake? A couple of reasons, but that's not important. What you want to know is how the actual jersey is different from the ruse. Most important, the stripes around the waist are reversed. Gold should be in the middle, with blue/silver above and below. It is different from the original '70s jersey in that regard.

Also, while there is thin silver piping running up the sides of the sweater, it's not nearly as heavy-handed as what you see in the viral image. And of course the image is blurry, as you would expect for something of this nature. So I can't see whether it has the silver stripes around the waist and sleeves. The real thing does, just like the new home jersey.

Also, some have asked about the silver "armpits." I haven't seen that part of the white sweater so I can't answer that. My guess would be that it mirrors the blue one, so it probably will.

Any other questions I can answer for you guys? This jersey will probably be unveiled in 11 days along with the new thirds. I've gotten some concept art based on the descriptions I posted. I'll try to get that on the site soon.

Have the shoulder patches been retained? the "B" with the sword through it was the one constant good mark in the last 14 years of Sabres hockey.

Actually, I'm hoping it's similar to Calgary in that regard, as on Calgary's home, it has black in the armpit area, while it is white on the road.

Well, like I said before, silver in the armpits shouldn't be quite as noticeable on a white jersey. Silver piping (where there's Sabres gold on the blue) should be all right - the "maize" (gold) piping on Michigan's white football jerseys the last few seasons actually kind of fades into the white from a distance (you'd have to be watching hi-def, or seeing a close-up, to notice).

Interesting that you say the gold stripe is in the center on the body... that makes it a bit more distinctive from the 1970-96 forebear in that aspect.

Awww, they stuck that damn side piping on it? Boooooooooo!

all they did in that fake is photoshop the winter classic jersey already in the game. Take off the patch, add some piping, and thats what you get.

I saw a mock-up of the jersey based on what you described, and it has a gold collar and blue laces. The reversal of the bottom stripes I can tolerate, but having a gold collar wouldn't look as crisp to me on a white jersey. Can you confirm what the color of the collar and laces are?

Jim, the collar is gold and it looks great. The key is that it doesn't really touch the white of the jersey. There's a dark blue shoulder yoke, bordered in gold that makes all the difference.

it's kind of funny how the alleged leaked image looks EXACTLY like one of the sweaters that was posted in the concepts page here...

Chris if you can't post the pics how are you going to give us the awesome history lesson pre-release? That has become a staple of yours that everyone has grown to love and participate in! Maybe you should create an alternate website and give users access to see info that "can't" be shown if fearful of losing sources or someone else's job? OR if I was you, I would give access of stuff like that by charging a membership fee to the site >.> not that I want to screw me or anyone else over but I would be damn willing to pay you a few bucks for a early look as I bet would other people. I know you'll prolly say you didn't make this page to make money but hey, just putting the thought out there. ;)

That is definitely the winter classic jersey and a little photo shop/paint. the black piping is so fake! it's not even blue nor is it even close to silver. I hate when people try to do that and try to make lies!
