Sabres Jerseys Now Leaked
So this is funny. Just hours after I debunked a fake leak, the real thing is here — with 11 days until the unveiling.
Seems someone secretly snapped photos of the Buffalo Sabres' new road and alternate jerseys.
The three photos in this post are making the rounds. And while these images are new to me, I have seen the Sabres' new sweaters and this, in fact, what they look like. And if these are fake, someone has gone to a lot of trouble to mislead us. A lot.
The royal blue third jersey you should find as described in the September edition of JerseyWatch 2010, right down to the strange striping.
While the script across the chest was almost certainly inspired by that of the old Buffalo Bisons, careful observers will note that it is actually different — perhaps a simple modernization?
You'll also note the 40th anniversary logo beneath the script mark — the classic Sabres logo with 19 and 70 inside the blue circle. That leaves the door wide open for the Sabres to keep this jersey in their arsenal for years to come.
The new road jersey also started making the rounds today. It is, as stated, a white version of the new home sweater — formerly the alternate uniform. And as some have asked, it does appear that the "silver armpits" and piping will carry over.
It also appears that neither sweater will have a shoulder patch. And neither these pictures nor the ones I saw had numbers on the jerseys which means will still don't know how they will be placed, especially on the third.
Before I wrap this up, it's important to point out that while I mistakenly used the word "confirmed" on Twitter earlier today, nothing is confirmed or official until the team makes an announcement. There's my disclaimer.
As always, check back here for jersey updates as the season gets under way.

Can we buy the leaker a better camera?
Great find btw - 1 vote "yes/like" for the third jesery. Still wished they went with www.NewBlueandGold.com 's idea for the main ones though. (but anything is better than the slug!)
While I'm reserving total judgement until I see them on the ice, I think both jerseys look pretty sharp.
I couldn't see the numbers going on the upper right side of the third jersey. I could however see the captain's C or the alternate's A going on that area instead of the numbers (like how Detroit's and Phoenix's alternate jersey C and A are). To me it kind of goes with the retro theming of the jersey. The white jersey however I could see the numbers going on their usual spot
Sabres fan here. That third jersey actually looks a lot more sharp than I initially thought it would. I like the homage to the old Buffalo Bison's sweaters in the script. I'm still not crazy about the silver armpits and silver piping down the front of the new away jersey, but oh well. At least we're finally back to the classic logo. RIP Buffaslug.
Not bad... of course, considering I dislike the logo, anyway.
The alternate looks pretty sharp. Something we've kinda seen before (Minnesota), yet unique and new... a different vintage, although I'm not crazy about all the striping everywhere. But I feel the "wordmark" should be larger... you see Anaheim? THAT'S how you make a wordmark look awesome.
why couldn't they just use the winter classic uniform. so much better. the piping and the new orientation of the stripe colors look really poor. its frustrating that they must make minor alterations on what would be a perfect design.
Being picky, but I don't see the damage in having the tail stripes reversed (as would be in the concept).
Small, but otherwise great looking Road jereseys
Man, the yellow middle stripes on the new away are killing me! Reverse it so that it's blue on the inside bordered by narrower yellow stripes. Its just a contrast issue for me. Glad to see them back to the classic logo though.
For some reason I'm a little disappointed in the new road sweaters. I think it's the lack of blue on the arms? Ah well, it's not bad just not amazing like I was expecting.
i LOVE what i am looking at. the third is not at all bad. way WAY better then i had originally thought. the new road jersey is just awesome. i love that they went with silver for the piping so that it blends in. my only complaint would be the striping around the waist but i love it the way it anyway. cant wait to get one
100% love it.
For the third, I like the colors and design of the jerseys a lot, but I dislike any jersey by default when it has text in place of a logo (Dallas anybody?). I really don't care what font or script or whatever it is. If it ain't a logo, I ain't liking it.
As for the roads, lose the piping and you got a really nice jersey. Piping is another thing that ruins a jersey immediately in my opinion.
Even with these faults, at least the slug is gone.
I think a thick, cream-colored (same color as the "Buffalo" script) stripe in between the yellow stripes on the new third would have made a LOAD of difference. Also, I would have preferred a blue closer to the royal they were showing on the Sabres site. Eh, guess that's why I don't make those decisions, I suppose.
OHH AHH SABRES ON THE WARPATH!!!!!
it's clear that the creative team in buffalo is very weak -- the unnecessary silver accents and the "19 70" look incredibly amateurish to me, and when you also consider the slug mess from the last few years, it's clear that those guys are in over their heads.
as designers, they just have no idea how to accurately capture the essence of the team and the area it represents. buffalo is an old school hockey town, and should have preserved and protected their original visual identity like the red wings, blackhawks, rangers, leafs, etc...
sometimes restraint is the most important tool in the designer's kit.
Alternate looks okay. But, I don't really care. As long as were back to the original scheme...Thank freakin God...finally. The away looks nice. Sign me up. When can I buy one? Calling the Sabres store Sept 18 for mine.
</3 the third jersey. I don't mind the striping, but I hate any hockey jersey that has baseballitis, so I guess that would be why. I dig the white one though. All I have is one of the first run of the blue slug ones, so I'm rather due for a new one. Either the (now) home ones or the white ones would do, methinks. Dunno why they went without shoulder patches though, since they were on the old ones.
Side note: am I the only one that has unending burning hatred at Reebok for that inane patch on the bottom of the replica jerseys?
Thrilled the original logo is back. It will take a little bit to get used to but I like them!
very very awsome for both jerseys!! cant wait to see that old school white in games :)
cant wait for the 18th ether gonna pick myself up one of those jerseys as thats when they get officially revealed.
lets hope for all sabres fans this 40th year means something more then just new jerseys.
what's with the silver pit-stains? ugly and stupid. does that say the players don't work hard enough to generate their own? when did silver become a mandatory part of the Sabres color scheme?
Why oh why do they feel the need to add the completely unneeded silver vertical piping on the torso?? I could live with the unnecessary silver on the stripes but the vertical is hideous. Assuming they will put the stupid numbers on the torso as well - worst trend in hockey history that needs to die a quick death.
Laying the white jersey out like that makes the piping and the grey in the underarm seem much more prominent than they will be. In reality, they'll both be real subtle; most probably won't notice them. Either way I think both jerseys look real sharp. Just glad the buffaslug is gone.
The piping is a Reebok trademark. Almost every jersey they redesign has the same piping on it. That is why the CFL allowed each team to bid out their jerseys. They got tired of Reebok dictating their design so every jersey looks the same.
I like the jerseys but I'm sure a lot of people know this but on the original Sabres white jerseys had 2 yellow stripes and a blue stripe in the middle on the bottom of the jersey and 2 blue stripes and a yellow stripe in the middle on the sleeves. in 1970 when they had the jerseys made the maker screwed up they're were suppose to be the same (I think 2 blue stripes and a yellow in the middle). They had no choice cause they had a game to play I believe and chose to wear them anyway. They've been that way ever since. I kind of wish they would've stuck to it.
i hope the 3rd jerseys look better on the ice than they do in these photographs because that is a horrible design. I think they are trying to do too much with the road whites. Take off the blue shoulders and silvers pits and pipping and kick it old school.
Seriously! You people that are complaining need to relax! THE SLUG IS GONE! Yes, Buffalo is a very passionate hockey town (I know, that's where I am from), but we should all be thankful that we have the classic logo back. With the exception of the original 6 teams EVERY team alters their jerseys from year to year (or every few years)...it's how they make money!!! If they kept the jerseys the same every year then those rabid hockey fans that want the latest jersey would not be waiting in line the day that they are released to get their hand on the newest version...it's how the economy works. I think it's sad that there have been many different versions of the Sabres uniforms over the last decade (I chuckle a little when I see someone wearing the red thirds from a few years ago or the old "bessie the mad cow" jerseys), but the important part is that the color scheme is back (blue and gold) and the classic logo is back.
Good job and thank you!
Putrid looking jerseys. That swishy lettering is weak and accurately represents the management, coaches & most players.
I think we can all (or most of us) agree by saying good riddance to the "Slug". A much better uniform set. The thirds are a nice touch and not that bad. My only problem is with what some people are so "meh" about and it's the size of the font. Don't forget, these are replicas judging by the annoying tag down at the bottom right (or left if you're wearing it), the authentic ones might have a bigger font, but who knows... Overall, not too shabby.
As for the whites, I'm on the fence. Am I happy the slug is gone? Absolutely! But I think they're doing too much here when they don't have to and that's what frustrates me from a design standpoint. It's not really an upgrade to the originals, just changes for the sake of changing something. Keep it simple like the new thirds and you got a winner. This team will never get it right, period. It might be a contrast in colors issue along with bad picture quality. I would've rather seen a blue collar, blue cuffs at the wrist (would have been hidden by the gloves anyway so not too horrible, but by itself looks awkward) and switching the stripes down at the bottom. To me it just comes off as one of those childrens knock offs you would find at Wal Mart or Ebay, but when they're worn on the ice with numbers and names added on to them, they probably won't look so amateurish. But hey, who cares what a team wears, as long as they win!
Geoffrey, I totally understand your gripe about patches on the waist on the replica jerseys! So much so that I've actually successfully removed them from ALL of my replicas (or premiers) that I own. I own a Sharks teal jersey and the reebok tag was right between the stripes and it looked so out of place that I couldn't stand it. Basically, just grabbed some scissors and removed the stitching from the inside of the jersey. Took maybe 10mins.
why did we waste our time with that stupid "SLUG" ! ! ! ! ! !
Not sure if you were informed, but WGRZ-TV here in Buffalo reported on these leaks today and credited this site. :P
I would have loved to see the third jersey be a replica of the Buffalo Bisons with the pepsi bottle cap but i still think the new third isn't bad....at least the slugs gone
So many of you are total cry babies... Considering what you've been stuck looking at for the last 13 or so years, you should all be rejoicing. That God awful Slug is gone and you have a vintagesk styled jersey set that looks fantastic! Granted, the new third jersey isn't the strongest design but at least it's only a third and you can now sport home and roads with dignity once again!
I am a designer. I like the third jersey and think the word buffalo works as it pays respect to the Bisons. The lettering also gives me an old feel which is doing its job of paying tribute to the 40th anniversary and the history of the franchise. I like that they didn't just copy the old away jersey and I personally like the piping on the new jerseys. What ever the sabres wear I think people will grow to love. Cant wait to see them in action.
Humm?
The 40th special jersey is nice ... but it seem "flat" .. Its missing some yellow in the script ... nothing to bold but just a like yellow touche somewhere ...
my Grade A -
And the "new" white (cause with Buffalo we dont know how many new jersey are they gonna make) Is no good !!!
whats up with the grey lines ?!#% .... Seems like grey is the "new" black trend or what ! And plus I so f... hate the vertical lines near the stomac on the reebok jerseys
my Grade C
the slug comes out, everyone complains that they want something like the old logo and style back....we, as sabres fans, FINALLY get it and everyone STILL complains...c'mon people, be happy cause these look AMAZING.
3rd meh, love the white, buying a authentic soon as possible. People that whine about it should be forced to go to every home game wearing slug jerseys and have to pay double for it.
Chris do me one favor, tell me the arms stripes go all the way around, not halfies like edmonton?
I myself am more happy that the jersey design that the slug was on is gone, it was the real eye-sore
I just also want to state that you need to keep in mind that these are pictures of the jersey just layed out and had their pictures taken by what looks like a cell phone. These are not the greatest of photos and I am sure once you get a look at these babies on the players, you'll like them just fine.
I have to say, it's great to see that Reebok is at least listening to the fans and are trying to undo the mess they created a couple years ago. I figured this would be a lengthy process and it would be a while before we saw teams get proper looking jerseys again.
For those that don't like the script on the third, let's go over this again...
The third is a tribute to the Buffalo Bisons.
Keep this in mind, and I say this in regards to Dallas as well, jerseys were designed very differently some 60-70 years ago. Text on the front of jerseys was normal. Remember the past when referring to vintage style jerseys, and something tells me that's what the Rangers will be going for as well.
OK, everyone can stop telling us to just be happy that the slug is dead. We are ecstatic that the slug is gone!! Being gone took the homes/aways from D's or F's immediately up to at least B's. The comments here about silver piping and stripe colors are more along the lines of "are these B+'s or A-'s?" or "what little things could we change to bump these up to A's?" type questions. Nobody's saying that they are so bad that we should just go back to the slugs. Personally, I'm 90% happy about the changes and can live with the other 10% not quite being perfect. Heck, in three years, they'll want to at least tweak the designs so that they can sell another round of jerseys and we may see the piping go away or some other less desirable detail changed.
UH, HIDEOUS! FINALLY SOMETHING WORSE THAN OUR THIRD JERSEY!!!!!
Love the away. The gray armpit would have been better if it was blue, same with the vertical stripe. But other than that i LOVE them both. Can't wait to see them in person!!!!
OK look, these new sweaters are a miracle! After looking at that slug, even non-Sabres fans are dancing in the streets (I'm a Leafs fan myself). While I am happy about the Leaf's new sweaters the Sabres are the big news this year. REJOICE THE SLUG IS DEAD! But seriously, did you expect exactly authentic replicas of the 1978-1996 sweaters? No! I expect these changes, it keeps the team up to date, increases sweater sales yet it keeps the old look. The 3rd isn't an exact replica of the white 1938-1966 sweater; but I still like it, even with Reebok Piping. This year I will look forward to when the Leafs play the Sabres, and let the rivalry continue. Both teams are now dressed the way they should be. BTW I never complained about the Leafs "plain" sweaters from 2007-2010. The lack of a shoulder patch and the two waist stripes was nothing next to the slug.
I've never been so happy to see a slug die...
The old style jerseys were good in the 70's and 80's but I personaly like the new jersey but it would of been better with the old logo.I don't like the horizontal strips. I like the third jersy logo, it would of looked nice on the newer style jersey.
Lmao look at this, a Sens fan coming in to say our jerseys are ugly... I wish I had someone around who didn't understand the work "irony" because here's a prefect example to explain it to them!
I LOVE this third. I hope it gets released in a feminine cut, I'll get one for sure!
A little on the slug... I didn't hate it as much as everyone else. I thought of it more as a Buffablur. They kind of went with one of those "woosh" logos. True, it didn't really work with a Buffalo head, but I stopped complaining about it when we won the President's Trophy!
I also happened to like the "mad cow" logos, and the red/black/silver/white combo was pretty sick... But I still bleed blue and gold!
Blech on the gray piping, but a big improvement overall.
I agree with Kevin Butts. The jersey design the slug was on was as bad if not worse than the actual slug itself.
You know, there's something that draws the eye to the too-much-space-between-the-F's and is kind of bothering me. (The second F being squished to the A is also wrong)
The original bottlecap logo lettering wasn't that botched
