Predators Mulling Mustard Again?

One way or another the Nashville Predators will have new uniforms next season. And now, it sounds like they could be considering making yellow a big part of the new look.

Previous reports had the Preds dropping the orange and gold from their color scheme entirely and going with their present third jersey look full-time. Then just this week I received an email from a Nashville fan named Philip.

Predators T-shirt / PhilipHe writes:

I talked with my Preds ticket rep today and he confirmed a new jersey. The jersey is not going to be white like everyone thinks. It will be yellow and have the current logo. He was one of the testers for it and said it's really cool.

Currently in the Preds pro shop they are selling yellow T-shirts that will look like the jersey. I have been wondering why they were selling these but it all makes sense now.

Philip sent in this picture of the yellow shirt being sold in the team store. He tells me its been on the shelves about a month.

It's not uncommon to see team's make T-shirts based on the jersey — the jersey color with the crest on the front. Some you can even buy customized with a name and logo. But most notably, they all have the NHL shield just below the collar, similar to where it's placed on the sweaters.

This yellow T-shirt has that NHL shield below the collar. It's not definitive proof of anything, but paired with the report from the ticket rep, it makes things a little more interesting.

If this is the case, there are two things of note: 1) the logo wouldn't be changing, and 2) is it possible we could finally see a team without a white jersey? The Preds could certainly get away with wearing yellow on the road with all the dark home jerseys in the league. And it wouldn't be the first time either. In the Kings' early days, they never wore white.

And you may recall the Predators previously wore a mustard-colored third jersey from 2001 to 2007. It was retired when Reebok commandeered the NHL's uniforms. But it wasn't quite as bright as the T-shirt in question.

What does this mean about changing the home jersey? Couldn't say. It's all up in the air at this point as we don't have all that much to go on. Just rumors for now.

I'm a minority here, but I love the old mustard jersey, it's hanging in my room as we speak, and I would love to see them bring something similar back.

I'd be fine with that. I think yellow's an underutilized color in the league anyway, and so long as they don't go the route of the previous yellow jerseys I'd be fine with that. I think jerseys in that color, with some blue and white splashed in, would look mighty fine.

Although, I would like to point out that this doesn't necessarily mean anything, as they do have yellow practice jerseys already.

Realistically, they are ugly as hell, but I have always LOVED those mustard jerseys. They're a part of Nashville's history!

Take it with a grain of salt.

Capitals have been selling the same style shirts (NHL shield, name plate and number) in blue for the last year, and obviously that hasn't come to fruition.

Here are my thoughts:

If this report is true then Nashville has the dumbest marketing team in the league and will soon have the ugliest uniform again.

For the love of god, yellow is not a good main uniform colour unless were talking about the Boston Bruins. Yellow helmets are absolutely vomit inducing and should be banned forever. The Kings and Canucks yellow home sweaters are some of the worst uniforms in the history of sports.

Everyone outside of a few unibomber types loves the white version of their third uniform that they have been wearing lately. It is simple and gets rid of that awful yellow and silver garbage that plagues their current set. Go with that!

As hideous as I thought this was at first, I'd actually love to see a white-less team. The Canucks didn't have a white jersey for a while either.

Maybe we could see a wheat road jersey for the Wild, and a gold Sens road jersey! :D

Well done LA, you've dithered and 'ummed' and 'aahhed' and now you've missed your chance; Nashville are about to swan in on one of the few things that the brand was iconic for.

Putting my ever so slight bitterness aside, good on Nashville for having the balls to go with something different, if only more of the recent expansion teams in the league thought the same way cough Columbus, Atlanta, Carolina cough

The Canadiens have been selling navy blue player name/# t-shirts for years like this with not even a thought of having a navy jersy (not including the blue "C" 100-anniversary jersey). And, the Canucks have been selling green ones, too. So, I think the color of the player name/# shirts, even with the NHL shield is completely independent of the on-ice jersey color scheme; just a utilization of the available team color palette for merchandise only.

BTW - 2010 Winter Classic the Bruins wore gold/yellow (home) and the Flyers wore white (visitor) so that must be ok with league branding. Also in that other Preds post the test group dude say it was a third color becoming the jersey base color and from his unpleasant reaction I gauged that was yellow or orange. The preds 3rd blue in their logo is too close to the Pens/Thrashers blue and orange is popular in Tennessee because of the Univ. of Tenn so that was my first bet, but that's so Flyers. I thought the Bruins Winter Classic looked tight as hell, I'd be fine with something along those lines or say a Notre Dame/Vegas Gold based jersey. Even dark gray would be different/cool/southern. I think their home jerseys are fine now, they just run the white up the sleeves too far so it looks like they're wearing a tshirt over a long sleeve shirt. GO PREDS!

I think it would be great if the Preds went back to a yellow, it just fits them. It is also a color not in use very much in the NHL for some reason. How come in football, which is the most popular sport they use a variety of colors on their uniforms but in hockey there are three colors, red, blue and black. Is just because teams are afraid to not sell jerseys or something. What ever happened to unique team identity.

id love to see boston have the yellow jersey back as an alternate and see the kings bring back the yellow along with the purple. i think itd be awesome to see nashville wear yellow, distance away from the usual white. this is what makes the lakers distant from the other teams along with the steelers and packers wearing yellow pants. Yellow is cool and different and i would love it.

Feb 17 · 6:13 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterDerek

I'm not opposed to yellow jerseys, though I have to agree that the Kings should've gone this route as a permanent change (and still should). I've always liked the idea of teams in the same city sharing colors, and the yellow Kings jersey echoed the Lakers' look nicely. I didn't have a problem with the silver-and-black rebranding of the Kings when a certain silver and black NFL team called that city home, as well. Now, the Kings are just wallowing in uniform mediocrity. Along these same lines, I wouldn't be opposed to the Penguins reintroducing that city's particular shade of yellow back into the uniform set (and even subbing it for the white jersey as they once did).

I've seen orange islanders player t-shirts around. I know that the islanders have plans to unveil a new third next season. Does this mean that theirs will be an orange third?

Feb 17 · 6:20 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterConor

First off, I want you to note the following. I am a HUGE fan of the mustard third, simply for the fact that it's so different.
It's not the best jersey, but it is unique. So a return to yellow might be a good thing. Especially since the team's
colors are based off of the Metro Nashville flag's colors.

With that said, I'm not sure what the Pred's intentions are whatsoever.

I went to their last home game, and to my chagrin, I noticed that they had completely painted over ALL of the yellow in the
Bridgestone Arena with a light, drab gray. Furthermore, everywhere you look now in the arena, you see the new logo.
They've started converting all of the old school merch mainstays into the new color scheme.

However, it is still IMPOSSIBLE to tell what next season holds for us here in Nashville. We will all just have to grit our teeth,
wait, & see.

its a yellow jersey with a logo... how is that supposed to look like a jersey?

Feb 17 · 6:23 PM PST | Unregistered Commentermuse

Personally I know that my friends and myself would be deeply disappointed if they current third logo isn't used full time. We just love the red eye in the logo.

Feb 17 · 6:35 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterDrewski

If the Preds are indeed going to yellow as a base color for their away jerseys, I wonder if they will go neo-retro with it to match some of Nashville's hockey heritage (yes, it exists). It would be interesting if they used some elements from the Dixie Flyer days in the late 60's.

Feb 17 · 6:59 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterErik

At least it isn't two tone blue with a circle logo. Props for originality, but this probably won't end well...

Penguins rocking the yellow: http://penshead.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/1980-81.jpg
Most people will hate on those but I likes. I think the key is yellow but not too much yellow

Feb 17 · 8:53 PM PST | Unregistered Commenterbrenthrax

I'm one that's skeptical, and most teams already sell shirts that use their tertiary color as it is. I feel this is a case of "I'll believe it when I see it." I have one of the mustard jerseys, and wear it to every game, and get many comments (more for the things ON the jersey, rather than the jersey itself), but I'm one that thinks that the Preds should move forward, and with that, adopt the white unis we've all seen. I finally got to see one in person, and they are fantastic jerseys. If this guy was a tester, I think that's all it was, testing, and I'm sure at some point, most every team has tested various color/design schemes, but those don't always make it to the final product we see on the ice. Again, I'll believe it when I see it.

Feb 17 · 9:08 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterBrian

The white jersey that the players were sporting at their casino night are absolutely classic. Why would they want to mess up a good thing by bringing in yellow?

Feb 17 · 9:53 PM PST | Unregistered Commentertrailer parik boy

Ducks sell orange shirts just like this and the Caps have been selling blue shirts like this. It's RBK looking to use the other colors of teams for those that want to wear something different

Feb 17 · 9:59 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterHockeyCali

Everyone, we all know that team shirts are being sold in secondary colors, but Philip got this straight from the source itself. This probably will be happening (unless they reconsider again)

Feb 18 · 4:20 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterBlueshirts95

More yellow jerseys please! Since the expansion of 1967, only the Kings, Canucks, Penguins and (Golden) Seals had yellow home jerseys, mainly during the 70s and 80s. And even if the Preds use that color for their away or third jersey, that would be good. It would be different than the blue/logo in a circle/fake retro style of jersey that various teams are using for their new sweaters.

Feb 18 · 8:27 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterBob

I've always lumped the mustard third jersey in with the Islanders hideous "Fisherman" shirts... they're terrible, but for whatever the reason, I absolutely LOVE THEM!

Bring back mustard!!

Feb 18 · 9:05 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterBrianB23

I hate the mustard. I especially hate when the fans wore them when we would play Boston. Duh! Yellow?!?!?!?
I've had a yellow preds shirt similar to the one above for a few years. I think it looks good. A full jersey would have to be done carefully so it wasn't too much....

Feb 18 · 9:52 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterCisar

"Really cool" I'm sold.

Feb 18 · 11:44 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterCharlie

I like the idea. There hasn't been a white-less team in the NHL since the 1988-89 Canucks, and I think it's about time. Hope the Preds decide to go with it :-)

As Brenthrax mentioned, the NHL seems to consider yellow to be a "dark" jersey now (as in the 2010 Winter Classic), which I don't like. I think yellow makes more sense as a road jersey. From a distance, yellow and white can look pretty similar.

@EL, why do only the Bruins have the right to wear yellow jerseys? It's not like they're the only team with yellow in their colors.

@Rob, you have to give Atlanta some credit for being the first team to wear a pale blue jersey since the 1972-73 Penguins. That showed some originality.

Feb 18 · 12:01 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterDaniel

as long as its not as bad as their old yellow, its fine with me

Feb 18 · 1:22 PM PST | Unregistered Commenterst4rr

Yeah, I was never someone who hated the old mustard yellows. Infact, I liked them since it was such a rare occurrence to see a yellow jersey in the NHL. I hope that they still incorperate the checkered pattern on a yellow jersey (if this is infact what they have planned).

Feb 18 · 2:45 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterJimbo

Sucks.

Why can't we just have jerseys that look like Hockey jerseys? Too much to ask I suppose.

Feb 18 · 3:47 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterDan

okay... i officially despise the nashville predators. they are absolutely retarded. yea, i also loved those mustard jerseys...but no way in hell should they bring something similar back as a HOME jersey. and no, they're not gonna have that beautiful alternate jersey become the home jersey and sport a yellow road jersey. i don't think that even the preds are stupid enough to do that. please, predators...PLEASE! bring in that wonderful white version of the alternate as a road jersey and promote the alternate to primary status. and...if you really want to...bring back the mustard jersey as an ALTERNATE only.

Feb 18 · 8:02 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterTroy

So Nashville wants to look like Team Sweden now. GO WITH THE WHITE SWEATER THAT MATCHES THE CURRENT THIRD!!!!

Geez, do I have to think of everything?

Feb 18 · 8:04 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterMatt

The mustard jersey doesn't bother me, but the wordmark and 90s logo are lame. Why not go with the awesome tertiary logo of the skull? That paired with some dark trim would balance out all the yellow.

Feb 18 · 8:33 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterDecker

Fact: If Carrie Underwood wants mustard, Carrie Underwood GETS mustard.
/Totally kidding.

Yellow in lieu of white wouldn't be so bad, but the jersey template itself on the mustard bombs was so boring. Plus that logo was horrendous. Maybe the team will just sub in the yellow onto the white prototype...

Feb 19 · 12:07 PM PST | Unregistered Commenterdownruplyb

Great. The possibly of more ugly crap when they were so farking close.

I have no objection to yellow. I root for a college team that uses it rather prominently, even with a full on yellow third. Which I like. But Navy, silver, and yellow just look bad together. I don't care where the color scheme comes from, it's flat out ugly. Dump the yellow, or dump the silver. And cub scouts aside, I don't think all that highly of navy and yellow. If the shades are right, sure. But in Nashville's case, the shades aren't right.

The simplified logo and simplified colors looks a billion times better. Players know it. Fans know it. Management seemingly has some idea of that. So why on earth would they press forward with more crap?

Feb 20 · 1:36 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterJeff P

The yellow jersey gets my vote. Sick of seeing every team becoming BLUE!

Feb 20 · 4:14 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterKevin

If this was a team that was in "traditional hockey market" people would love to see this in yellow. I'd say give it a try especially if it is a different tone of yellow then what they had before, and they put this logo on it not their secondary I think they would look pretty sweet.

Feb 21 · 2:18 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterSteve-O

I feel exactly the same as Derek and Bob. Ever since I first watched my Canucks wear their home yellow V uniforms on Hockey Night In Canada back in 1980, I just fell in love with the look. Now, being a traditionalist, I love white being worn at home. However, a nice shade of yellow with good complementary colours can give the light-coloured uniform a distinctive and unique look. Winning and contending helps too. Here are my observations on why yellow has gotten such a negative rap in hockey:

1) Canucks - The Flying Double V design was one of pro sports' most gaudy designs and had taken away from the uniqueness of the home yellow. Should have kept the classic Stick 'n Rink crest. Also with the exception of the '82 Cup run, Vancouver never had a winning season in those uniforms. Losing never helps. Thank you very much Harry Neale! >: (

2) Kings - The one fashion sin the Kings committed during the purple and gold era were the home gold pants. After goalie, Rogie Vachon, and the Triple Crown Line(Taylor, Dionne, & Simmer), where were the rest of the guys to make up a great team? Beautiful uniforms, horrible management.

3) Golden Seals and Penguins - Lots of losing and LOTS of losing. Enough said.

4) Predators - The idea to use yellow-gold was great. The choice to make it look like dried out mustard was a big boo-boo.

If they went with the third jersey now for thier home jersey and the white ones we've seen around for the away ones, then a yellow jersey would be awesome as a third.
