Sweater Switch 2011

Lots of players have gotten new teams in the last couple of weeks either by trade or, mostly, free agent signings. Like in the past, I'd like to start collecting photos of these guys wearing or clutching their new team's sweater. If you know of any players I'm missing, shoot an email!

Brad Richards (19) signs with Rangers / Blueshirts United

One of the biggest signings of the summer was also the saddest for me. I was one of the deluded Lightning fans hoping that Brad Richards would choose to come back to the team where he won his Stanley Cup. And the team that drafted him. Especially now that all of the pieces we got for him are gone (Jussi Jokinen, Jeff Halpern and Mike Smith). Guess the home town discount was a little to steep for him.

Anyway, Richards signed with the New York Rangers on July 2 and four days later he was in the Big Apple being given his new No. 19 sweater. Richards is returning the number he wore during his seven seasons in Tampa Bay. He played the last three and change in Dallas wearing No. 91.

For Richards to have 19 in New York, it meant former Lightning teammate Ruslan Fedotenko had to give it up. So Rusty then took No. 26 which he previously wore in Pittsburgh. The domino effect continued with Erik Christensen who was wearing 26 last season. He now has 40. This all comes by way of the Rangers' official Twitter account, which also indicated new addition Mike Rupp will wear No. 71.

Nine new players were welcomed to south Florida / Panthers

On July 8, the Florida Panthers held a press conference to introduce nine of their newest players to the media (and there are in fact more than nine total). Matt Bradley wore No. 10 in Washington but will switch to No. 22 in south Florida (David Booth has 10). Scottie Upshall had No. 8 in Phoenix and will now wear No. 19 (Tim Kennedy has 8).

Michael Repik, now wearing No. 26, gave up his No. 32 sweater for newcomer Kris Versteeg who previously wore it in Chicago and Toronto. (Most recently in Philadelphia he wore No. 10 even though the equipment guys had 32 prepared for him.) In addition, Nolan Yonkman, who came from Phoenix where he was No. 52, will be No. 34 with the Panthers. Early in his career, he wore No. 40 in Washington. (I think he just picks them randomly.)

New goalie Jose Theodore will continue to wear his famous No. 60 while Brian Campbell will stick with 51. Ed Jovanovski returns to the Cats lineup in the same No. 55 he's always worn. Tomas Kopecky is keeping his No. 82 jersey as is Tomas Fleischmann with No. 14.

But it doesn't stop there for the Panthers club, which now barely resembles last year's team. Sean Bergenheim, No. 10 last season in Tampa, will return to No. 20, which he wore with the Islanders. Another recent signee, Marcel Goc, has picked No. 21, according to the Panthers' website. He wore No. 9 most recently in Nashville and No. 11 for several seasons in San Jose.

Still not done. Jack Skille is changing his number from 15 to 12, according to a Panthers tweet. No reason was given. No one else has taken No. 15 in Florida. Finally moving on now...

Semyon Varlmov (1) gets his new Colorado sweater / Avalanche

Goaltender Semyon Varlamov signed with the Colorado Avalanche on July 1. Six days later, he was welcomed by the Denver media and given his new No. 1 sweater by the team. He wore No. 1 last season with the Capitals but had 40 prior to that.

On a related number note, no Avalanche player will ever again sport the No. 21 sweater that Peter Forsberg made famous. According to a tweet on June 30, the team will retire it on opening night (Oct. 8) against the Red Wings.

But wait there's more. I haven't seen photos yet, but a number of other players have already settled on jersey numbers with their new teams.

Details on Dany Heatley and Martin Havlat have moved and can now be found in the July 12 update.

Jaromir Jagr is making his return to the NHL this fall. He's keeping his trademark No. 68 sweater, but this time he's bringing it to the Philadelphia Flyers. You can already buy one. That's just so wrong. Speaking of Philly, newcomer goalie Ilya Bryzgalov will keep his No. 30.

Peter Budaj is joining the Montreal Canadiens this season. He hasn't yet said what number he'll wear, but he won't be hanging on to the No. 31 he wore in Denver as long as Carey Price is around. For that matter, newcomer Erik Cole will probably have to give up the No. 26 uniform he had as a Hurricane unless Josh Gorges decides to give it up.

In a July 7 tweet, the St. Louis Blues announced Jason Arnott will keep the No. 44 he wore in Washington and Jamie Langenbrunner will keep his No. 15 jersey. Arnott previously had No. 25 in New Jersey.

And in what could possibly be the best name/number combination to ever skate on NHL ice, Mike Commodore tweeted on July 6 that he's considering sporting No. 64 for the Detroit Red Wings. He's had No. 22 for the last three years in Columbus.

Let me know if I've missed anyone important. And if you do, please provide a link to a tweet or news article for verification... something beyond a team website's roster page. Those aren't always updated.

Just to add on more info:

Richards changed to 91 in Dallas because 19 (Bill Masterton) was retired in 1987.

Kris Versteeg has always stated that his number is 10. 32 was assigned to him in Chicago because Patrick Sharp already wore 10, and he just stuck with it. When Brayden Schenn was acquired (#10 in juniors, #55 for the Kings in his short stint), Versteeg gave it up and returned to his familiar 32, which he will keep because (as you said) David Booth already has it.

Nolan Yonkman's 34 was of his choosing. His previous numbers had been assigned by the team, as with most depth players who don't figure into the lineup regularly.

Jack Skille wore #12 during his NCAA days with Wisconsin and I imagine that's the reason for the change.

Cheers.

Setoguchi wearing #10 for the wild.

Even as a Hawks fan, the idea of a Commodore 64 jersey is just all kinds of awesome....

Jul 10 · 3:24 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterChicagolander

Havlat wore No. 9 in his days in Ottawa and had the nickname, at least locally of MACH9 because of his speed.

Jul 10 · 3:32 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterDave

On the note of the 'Reebok' instead of the Vector, it seems as though all of these jerseys have the word mark, even those that are not new this year.

Jul 10 · 5:57 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterDave

The Commodore 64 jersey will sell like gangbusters, too, from folks I've talked to here in Detroit. Wings' equipment manager says that 64 is Commodore's for the taking... Wings won't "not allow" it.

Varlamov wore #1 last year in DC, too.

Jul 10 · 9:29 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterPaul

Varlamov was wearing #1 for the last while in Washington.

Havlat wore #9 in Ottawa. Dean Brown and Gord Wilson of The Team 1200 called him "Mach 9".

Not the first time I've posted this but any excuse... In a year when even Florida are getting things right on the jersey front, Nashville make bold progress and Edmonton now have a beautiful road, the Avs are STILL going to ice for another season in the uniprons. I like the Avs but they really need to get back to the mountain range that won the Cups. Right now, it's the worst jersey set in the entire league - the most visible victims of EDGE clinging on relentlessly. I really dislike them and the third is little better... and I can't say that about any other teams, not even Anaheim.

Havlat did wear #24 for a little bit. See this photo here: http://www3.pictures.zimbio.com/gi/Martin+Havlat+Minnesota+Wild+v+Columbus+Blue+bqDgu7R_lrhl.jpg

"And in what could possibly be the best name/number combination to ever skate on NHL ice" I think Steve Heinz #57, is hard to top. :-)

For the Blues, Scott Nichol will be wearing #12, and Kevin Shattenkirk will switch from 12 to 22.

Oh, and it can be verified here.

Anyone else notice that there's Reebok text on the Avs jersey but not on the other ones?

I didn't recognize Voracek with short hair.

FWIW, long-time part-time Jacket Andrew Murray wore #17, and it wasn't clear he wouldn't be returning next season when Carter was signed. So that might have played into Carter's decision to take #7.

What color will the Cats' helmets be? I would assume navy, but red is possible... both would look funny.

Jul 10 · 6:53 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterCarlos

It's funny, but, the two players not available for pictures with them in their new jerseys, Carter and Richards...

Jul 11 · 5:05 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterDSchwiz

Kotalik will probably wear #12 (Mancari, who had it last year, is off to Vancouver) again during training camp and maybe while Pominville is on LTIR (if, indeed, he is on it to start the season.) Otherwise, he'll be down in Rochester or maybe headed over to Europe.

I'll be surprised if Leino chooses #10. He's worn #20 twice in his career (Finland and NHL), which is available (Rob Neidermayer is off to Europe), and he's worn #20, #21, and #22 in the NHL, so #23 also seems a likely choice (assuming we don't see the return of Chris Drury.)

Jul 11 · 6:56 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterCarpandean

Josh Gorges has number 26 since his arrival in Montreal so I'd be surprise to see him give it up to newcomer Erik Cole. Habs haven't announced new numbers yet. They always do after everyone else...

My heart sank a little to see Regehr with his Sabres uniform.

Good luck Reggie, Calgary will miss you.

Jul 11 · 8:06 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterMinh

Jeff Carter wore #7 in Junior Hockey. He wore #37 with the Phantoms when they won the Calder Cup. So I guess he likes the #7.

Jul 11 · 11:49 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterBetty

The Rangers and Sabres jersey's still have the Reebok mark.Maybe the teams had some lying around. I would suspect that all newly manufactured ones will have the word Reebok.

Jul 11 · 12:11 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterRob S

Wow it'll be strange to see Reggie where #24 for the Sabres next season. Its for the best though. He'd done all he could with the Flames, and it was time to move on. Buffalo seems like a good fit even though he doesn't look so pleased about the situation in that picture.

Jul 12 · 12:31 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterDavid

the reason Jack Skille probably switched is because he wore #12 in his career with the Rockford Icehogs whear he had a lot of success as an AHLer, probably a superstitious kinda thing.

Jul 12 · 6:31 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterJoe

The Habs picture doesn't make my head explode. I'm used to seeing that. The National Lacrosse League has Reebok as the official outfitter, so all equipment has a Reebok logo. This past season, all the new jerseys have the new Reebok wordmark. I have Buffalo Bandits season tickets and from where I sit, I can see most of the details on the players jerseys. I've seen quite a number of Bandits wearing the Vector and Wordmark jerseys, it is noticable on the back of the jerseys. The fronts also have Reebok on them, so the older ones with the Vector are visibly covered with the wordmark patched on. There are pictures that show what I'm talking about somewhere on the NLL website. I know this isn't hockey related, but I wanted to bring it up. LETS GO BUFFALO!!

What is so "ridiculous" about MTL having so many retired numbers???

Jul 14 · 2:16 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterNick

Nick: Well obviously the fact that eventually there will be no numbers left for any Canadiens to wear. They'll have to fold the team and start a new one ... that or dip into the triple digits. I kid, of course. But seriously, I'm not in favor of retiring jersey numbers forever. Maybe shelf a number for 25 or 30 years or so then put it back into rotation so someone else can further its legacy. The Leafs do it right. They "honor" numbers rather than retiring them.

Jul 14 · 7:46 PM PDT | Registered CommenterChris

This is always a subject to debate. I know there are ex leaf players and fans who dislike the fact that they don't retire their numbers. And to be fair to MTL there are a couple numbers that have been retired for more than just 1 player, so I don't think that they have noticed the problem they have run into with retiring so many.

Jul 15 · 4:07 AM PDT | Unregistered Commenterzane

Jets management has said they're interested in honouring the old Jets in some way. Whether that means outright retiring 25 and 27 for Steen and Numminen, or just informally witholding them, is hard to say. Maybe hanging honoured (but not quite retired) number banners from the rafters as a recognition of the city's history.

But it seems likely neither Kane nor Little will be asked to give up their #9 and #10, arguably the two greatest retired numbers in Winnipeg sports history. If I were a betting man, I'd wager that Kane and Little will be quietly encouraged to change numbers like Montreal's Ryan O'Byrne did a couple seasons ago when the number he was using was retired mid-season--in a pre-game ceremony honouring Hull and/or Hawerchuk's contributions to Winnipeg's hockey history. I'm not sure either has a deep connection to their current number and would be especially resistant to change if it were in deference to a hockey legend like Hull or Hawerchuk

"As for guys like Ben Eager, Eric Belanger, Cam Barker, Darcy Hordichuk and Andy Sutton... we'll just have to wait."

#20 - Eric Belanger
#25 - Andy Sutton
#55 - Ben Eager
#13 - Cam Barker

Jul 26 · 5:34 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterEpidemic

Cam Barker actually wore #25 most recently with the Wild. When he first got traded there, Eric Belanger had 25, so Barks took 45, but Belanger was traded later that year, so at the beginning of last season, Barker took 25 back. But, given Sutton's veteran status, makes sense that Barker had to lose his preferred number, which he wore in Minnesota, Chicago, Rockford, and Medicine Hat.
