Concepts Page: How It's Made
Thursday · Oct 4 · 2012 | 2:22 AM PDT 16 Comments
I'll get back to the jersey and logo news in short order, but here's a little something different today. The video above is a time lapse of my screen as I put together the display graphics for the Concepts page. This time lapse was taken on Sept. 18. It features concepts posted between Sept. 21 and today.
I usually try to work ahead about a week or more in order to make sure the posts keep flowing on a daily basis. Hope you guys enjoy it.
I'm also hoping this video inspires a few of our more prolific concept artists to record their screens when they sit down to design a logo or jersey. I think we'd all enjoy watching the making of an actual concept. Who's game?

So you take artwork that people submit to you, cut it apart and place it on your own template with your own logo? Seems rather unfair to the original artist if you ask me.
A side note from a photoshop nerd: I love the look of the all black tool boxes. Looks MUCH cleaner than the older versions of photoshop.
Keep this type of content coming!
A Pixelmator user, eh? Good choice :)
Alan: That's not fair or accurate. Cut it apart? Laughable, actually. If you have something against me or this site, what are you doing here? Because I'm not sure what your complaint is really about.
First of all, any artist is welcome to design their own background on which to submit their work. However, most simply use a blank or white background, which is why I started using a unified display template. And I've been using it for 229 days now. Did you just notice?
And of course the posting will feature the Icethetics logo if it's being posted on this site. It also features prominently the name of the designer and any personal logo they provide. I don't alter anyone's designs, I simply lay them out in a more eye-pleasing format.
So tell me again what's unfair?
Andrew & Josh: I've always liked the look and ease of use of Pixelmator as well. Makes putting together lots of site graphics a much quicker task.
This is such a unique site, and I always enjoy seeing the designers' ideas on here. From the good, the bad, to the weird, we get it all! Great to see how it all comes together, I think it's cool to see a little behind the curtain.
Chris: Don't listen to a guy like Alan, who obviously has never visited your site before. Chris, you're doing such a great job with this website. For a guy like me, who as a kid spend hours designing logos and jerseys for fictional hockey teams, your website is a dream come true! I watch the concepts every day; you're doing a stellar job and keep doing what you're doing.
I've done so many concepts for the NHL, AHL, defunct organizations, and etc that I've got a DeviantArt account full of them. That said I've had ideas of doing a video or step-by-step for me creating a concept. Heck I'd send some concepts in to be viewed on here if I could fix the sizing. Other than that, I've been tuning into the site since the original Icethetics and quite the inspiration it ignited for me.
That was a really cool video! And it makes me feel special that my concept was the last one shown! :)
Cool video, but what is that song?! I think it's awesome!
I'd be game for putting something together but I don't have a screen capture program! Any suggestions for a program?
Mark: It's called "Day After Day" by The Ben Taylor Band - iTunes
Justin: If you're on a Mac, it's built into QuickTime.
What programs do you use for your designing and graphic creation?
Ryan H.: The software I use is called Pixelmator. It's designed specifically for Macs. It's a powerful alternative to Photoshop.
That was great. Keep up the good work Chris, I love this site!
Awesome to see how u put your stuff together. You always do an excellent job Chris, I love visiting your site almost daily and have been since '07!
