Las Vegas Wranglers Launch New Logos
We may be light on new NHL logos and uniforms this summer, but the same can't be said for the minors. Today, the ECHL's Las Vegas Wranglers unveiled a brand new set of logos.
The Wranglers are celebrating their 10th anniversary in Sin City and have decided a revamped look is in order. Gone is the shadowy cowboy and his bull. In its place, well, what the team is still calling a cowboy — wearing an old time hockey mask.
Have to be honest. His head covering looks a lot more like a fedora than a Stetson. Combined with the creepy mask, that's almost unquestionably a Freddy/Jason hybrid depicted in that logo. And overall, it does feel like a downgrade from the Wranglers' previous visual identity.
Las Vegas joined the ECHL's ranks as an expansion member in 2003. So 2013 marks a decade in action. And while I may not be able to offer a glowing review for the new primary mark, I absolutely love the creativity behind the 10th anniversary mark — fives on a pair of dice. When have we ever seen an anniversary logo do anything so outside the box?
The two secondary wordmark-infused logos show us that the Wranglers are retaining a portion of their original identity. Basically, the font's not changing.
So how is the team spinning their new look?
“It’s a simple and bold new look to celebrate a terrific ten-year run in one of the greatest cities in the world,” said Wranglers president and COO Billy Johnson.
“We have always striven to bring a major league caliber experience to Las Vegas through sights, sounds and entertainment, and the new branding is the next step up.”
I don't know if a couple of logos can really do that, unless they think people are less likely to buy a ticket with John Wayne on it.
So it is certainly a simple design and that always wins points in my book. I just wish it looked a little more like a cowboy. What's your take on the new look?

Remember "Freddy vs. Jason" back in '03? Well, this logo is what would have happened had Freddy won (and claimed Jason's mask as the trophy)
I like the new look. The hockey mask (Jason Vorhees-style mask) replaces what would be a bandana tied over the noise and mouth to protect from dust while riding in the desert. That's typically how we picture the outlaws of the West and not the Wranglers, but it's still fine as an "old West" look. I think the hockey mask and cowboy hat combo is a cool look and am interested to see what the jerseys look like.
The color scheme and hat do look Freddy Kruger-ish, infused with the Jason mask, but as long as the jersey isn't a red-and-black-striped sweater, I don't see that being an issue.
I've seen better logos on Freak-out Friday. Sorely disappointed with this artwork.
EW I love aesthetics to death but this, no thanks... LV NV, come on guys... You're the wranglers not the murdering musketeers
I'm highly disappointed with this logo.. It look basic and less like a cowboy.. It look more like a Mafia with a goalie mask.. Calgary Hitmen with a hat?
It looks more like a revamped Wheeling Nailers logo (http://thepensnation.com/tpn/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/wheeling-nailers.gif) than a Wranglers logo.
It is definitely an interesting logo set. The only problem I have with it is the 'LV/NV' lettering...
The 'LV/NV' seems a bit amateur, and just thrown in there as an after thought. And, now that I think about it, same goes for those straps on the hockey mask. I think we all know that it is an old time goalie mask. Not sure if we need those add-on 'straps' to sell the mask look.
The 'LV/NV' and the 'Las Vegas' in the word mark just has a strange font. It doesn't seem to fit with the other, more bold font that they used. I like the 'Wranglers' and the dice, but that 'Las Vegas' just seems thrown on there. Oh well, just my opinion.
The dice anniversary logo is hardly original. They did the same thing for their fifth anniversary logo, using one die.
Overall, it's a HUGE downgrade. What were they thinking?
Why do teams find it necessary to mess with a good thing?
Seriously, what were they thinking?
I love it! If only the poeple who dreamed up the goofy name and 'lack of logo' with the Abbotsford Heat had thought of 'thinking outside the box'. The hat looks like a stetson, but I like the fact that it's got some 'Vegas' style to it, kinda Sinatra like. Kudos in my books for something different. Agree with the dice, again.....well done.
Their old logo was one of my favorite minor league logos. This is really sad.
Don't forget, the Wranglers' former logo might have been beloved, but it didn't appear on the jerseys. For the last five seasons we've had a really basic black and white jersey set with a "poker chip" front that was really plain. It was fine for a while, but I'm certainly ready for a change, and I like the new look.
This logo says "Las Vegas Serial Murders," not so much Wranglers. And the hat looks like a Fedora, not a cowboy hat.
sorry, thought they were called 'Wranglers', not 'Movie Murderers'??? very strange new look.....
So... the Wranglers play rollerhockey?
If you squint, it almost looks like the Las Vegas Rorshachs...
I do like the simplified shield look, but the roundedness of the hat and the mask make it look like they only had MS Paint to create shapes.
Horribly amateurish. What were they thinking?!?
Disappointed to say the least. This logo was great for the Friday the 13th games that it appeared on (similar version). But to see it resurrected for full time use is not cool. The only thing that needed changing was the jerseys (plain black + white). Everything looks amateurish. I'd rather have the Duke (mascot) on it.
That's bad. A cross between Freddy and Indiana Jones.
i love this new logo!
and guys this is a hockey team, that is an old school goalie mask! not murders or mafia
@Dano: It may be an old school hockey mask.. But they are not doing a good job to make it look less like murders or mafia... And yet even losing the whole cowboy aspect to it, which it doesn't make sense why they are called the "Wranglers."
I'm not too crazy about it, but as a fan of the team, I'm sure it'll grow on me. I agree with everyone else, the "LV" "NV" on both sides of the logo is amateurish and looks really out of place there. Get rid of it! Idk if I'd like to see this as the primary logo on a jersey, but perhaps as a shoulder patch on a jersey that has the word "VEGAS" written diagonally down the front of the jersey
As soon as I saw this logo I loved it! How can you not like it? Old school "Jason" mask! It's great!
