NHL JerseyWatch 2013
It happens every January. The kickoff of Icethetics' annual NHL JerseyWatch. Every month or so, we collect in one place all of the news on uniform changes working their way through the league's pipeline. As we saw, 2012 was an off year. No big changes to speak of. Not so in 2013.
The reason we always premiere the NHL JerseyWatch in January is because it coincides with the release of Reebok's yearly planning catalog — the document sent to retailers outlining new sweaters that will be available in the new year. Icethetics has gotten wind of the teams on that list — and some of them may surprise you.
As you dive into this post, keep in mind that it's all subject to change or delay. But as of now, these are the NHL uniform changes anticipated for the 2013-14 season.
Sabres have new alternate jersey in the works for 2013
Just yesterday, in the 2013 NHL Season Preview, I mentioned the Buffalo Sabres sending their previous third jersey out to pasture. As it happens, its successor is already in the pipeline.
The news first broke last August when Sabres president Ted Black told Buffalo Business First writer James Fink that a new alternate uniform would be making its debut next fall. "Yes, it will be blue-and-gold and feature the team's beloved original logo," wrote Fink. "What else is on the jersey is still being determined."
Team president says it won't be a throwback
Black has been talking about the new third jersey a little more recently, too. In fact, just yesterday he was on the radio — WGR 550 in Buffalo — fielding calls from listeners when someone brought up jersey designs.
Bruce (caller): Yeah, I was wondering if the Sabres could bring back the royal blue uniforms with the gold stripes and the gold numbers and the original insignia of the Sabres on the shoulders.
Ted Black: We will have a new third jersey for next season. We're still working on the final designs of that. That probably won't be released until the summer. As I say that, it probably leaks out anyway. But, Bruce, it won't look like what you're envisioning. I think that the rest of the jerseys are gonna remain the way they are. From time to time the league does special events and do these retro jerseys so there may be opportunities to showcase the jersey that Bruce is discussing.
Is Ted inviting his Sabres back for a future Winter Classic? You'll recall Buffalo hosted the first one back in 2008 and did, in fact, where a retro white jersey from way back when.
In any case, while Black doesn't say what the jersey will look like, he does say what it won't look like. For those of you, like Bruce, still hoping for that original royal blue getup, forget it. Maybe the 50th anniversary in 2020. But it's not happening this year.
That may seem to go against what was written in Business First in August, but then that article was pretty vague. Will the jersey be blue? Good odds for the Sabres. Will it have the team's primary logo on it somewhere? Also good odds. That happens to describe the last third jersey as well.
I'm surprised to hear Black says the final designs are still being worked on when the deadline for these things is typically the end of December. Maybe they got an extension. Regardless, if it doesn't leak first, we should get our first look at this jersey late this summer.
Reebok says Flames are swapping out retro third
This one definitely gets a big question mark from me. According to Reebok's catalog, the Calgary Flames are apparently eyeing a new third jersey for next season.
The logical question you have to ask is, why? Why dump the brightly-colored retro alternate in the first place? Are fans complaining about it? Are they not buying them? Can't imagine either of those are true. Or that a new Flames third jersey would be any color but black. Which will excite almost none of you.
Here's my hope. Maybe the NHL is wising up to the retro trend and allowing teams a "fourth" throwback jersey. That would allow the Flames to keep their 1980s-style red sweater while also experimenting with a new third design. Then maybe they'll add a few "Retro Nights" throughout the season. On those nights, every team that has one gets to break out their throwback.
But that's all just wishful thinking. Would be nice though, right? And for what it's worth, we've had no confirmation yet from the Flames that a new sweater is forthcoming.
Reebok indicates new home/roads for Hurricanes
That's right, 16 years after leaving Hartford, the Carolina Hurricanes may be getting another uniform overhaul. Or so says Reebok, anyway. The manufacturer is preparing retailers for possible new home and road jerseys. However, the alternate appears to be remaining the same.
There haven't been any rumors about the Hurricanes looking to redesign their sweaters, so it could be that they're just simplifying their designs next season. The fact that the third jersey isn't changing suggests the colors and logos will be left alone for now.
What do you imagine the Canes could have in store for 2013?
Stars changing everything but their name in 2013
The Dallas Stars have been contemplating new uniforms for a couple of years now, but a recent ownership change delayed things a bit. However, all new logos and sweaters are now on track for next fall, according to owner Tom Gaglardi.
During a radio interview back in November, Gaglardi first talked about wanting new uniforms for the Stars. At that point he also mentioned it was possible a new logo would be introduced as well. Around that same time, Stars Inside Edge blogger Mark Stepneski confirmed the team had looked at design proposals.
New look expected to be 'drastically different'
Earlier this month, Dallas Morning News beat writer Mike Heika provided some details about the forthcoming revamp. For one thing, green will be the Stars' dominant color going forward. Black has had that role for most of the past 20 years. He confirmed there will definitely be a new logo along with a drastically different look from the Stars' current branding.
Team may unveil redesign before this spring
Over the weekend, Heika engaged readers in a web chat and answered a couple of questions about the logo and uniform redesign. Here's an excerpt from the discussion:
What do you know about the new jerseys?
I know they were all over the map, and had all sorts of color choices, but that they made a late decision to stick with green. I heard they were very interested in "Eagles" green for a while, but that this prototype is more "Celtics" green. Other than that, I have no idea. I don't know what the new logo looks like, but that will probably make it or break it for a lot of fans.
Will the Stars introduce the new logo and uniform during the season (like Tampa did a few years ago) or wait until the draft?
To be decided. I know Jim Lites is chomping at the bit with all marketing he wants to do, so the guess is they will show you the new uniforms at some point during the 2012-13 season and then start wearing them during the 2013-14 season.
So it looks like we may not have to wait long to see the new designs. Hopefully by now they're completed and just going through the final approval process.
This has got to be the change I'm most excited about. After all, Dallas has needed a new look for a long time. They're still wearing what the North Stars wore their last season in Minnesota.
Wild updating road sweater only in the fall
Just after Christmas, word leaked out that the Minnesota Wild were conducting surveys among fans to determine a new design for their road uniforms. They even had mock-ups to show off — some of which were described in that blog post.
According to one Icethetics reader:
One was a white sweater with the large, Wild head crest on the front, vertical stripes are gone. Replaced with two horizontal green stripes on the arms. The "red was gone" from the shoulder yoke, but didn't specify whether the shoulders had any color left.
The other option was basically a reverse of the current alternates. Antique white base with the Minnesota Wild script and green accents.
The first one sounds better. The final design will probably be revealed some time this summer. My bet is they'll unveil it at the draft and hand it to their first pick of 2013.
Reebok lists new home/road set for Canadiens
Hold everything. That's sacrilege, right? Could the Montreal Canadiens really be thinking about altering their classic home and road jerseys in some way? You wouldn't think so, but there they are on Reebok's list.
In all likelihood, the changes won't be significant. If anything, it'll probably be nothing more than to add a lace-up collar like they used to have in the old days. I can't imagine changing any colors or striping — uniform elements that have almost never been touched. Ever.
It's been a long time since the Habs made any real changes to their uniforms. The red shoulder yoke was added to the white jersey in 1941. They went with a blue chest stripe and no shoulder colors for a few years from 1944 to 1947 before going back to the design we know today.
And as for the red jersey, it has remained exactly the same since the start of the NHL in 1917 — back when hockey sweaters were actual sweaters. And for whatever it's worth they had the lace-up collar going from 1941 to 1975. (All that info gathered from NHLUniforms.com, by the way.)
Penguins ready for yet another third jersey, says Reebok
Guess the Pittsburgh Penguins are ready to have an alternate sweater that didn't originate at the Winter Classic. At least that's what Reebok has slated for the 2013-14 season.
The Pens were featured in the 2008 and 2011 outdoor games — with different blue jerseys each time. And the in seasons following each Winter Classic, the jerseys were adopted as alternates and used another dozen or so times per season. Now it looks like the latest (dark blue) one is getting retired this year in favor of a new design.
I can't imagine we'll get another blue jersey or that Mario Lemieux's Penguins will do anything crazy and super modern. If I were to bet on it, I'd say they roll back the clock a couple of decades to sport something similar to what Lemieux and friends wore whilst leading the team to back-to-back Stanley Cups. But that's all just wishful guess work. It could be anything at this point.
Reebok indicates Sharks revamping home/road uniforms
Reebok's 2013 catalog has one last surprise for us. Like the Hurricanes and Canadiens, the San Jose Sharks are apparently looking at new or modified home and road sweaters for the fall. And also like the Canes, the black third jersey seems to be sticking around.
This is unexpected because the Sharks just got new uniforms (and a new logo) back in 2007. That leads me to think the changes — if true — won't be significant. So what could they be?
Winter Classic staying in Michigan in 2014
Since the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs didn't get to play their big game earlier this month, the NHL Winter Classic at The Big House will likely just shift a season to 2014 — giving the two Original Six clubs another shot at an outdoor match-up.
That means we should get a look at the jerseys planned for this game next winter. In fact, just recently we got a sneak peek in the form of a couple of t-shirts that were leaked by an online retailer.
If nothing else, this probably tells us what the crests and sweater numbers will look like. Though obviously one of these teams will have to wear white — I'm guessing that'll be the Leafs.
No All-Star Game expected in 2014 due to Olympics
Normally, we don't get an NHL All-Star Game in the same year as the Winter Olympics. The league takes a break to allow its players to skate for their countries for a few weeks. In 2014, Sochi, Russia will host the games.
This means Columbus will have to wait until 2015 at the earliest to get its hosting duties back. Though the wait could be longer. During the last lockout, the 2005 All-Star Game was to be hosted by Atlanta. In 2006, Phoenix was slated to get the event — but it was canceled to make time for the Olympics.
Atlanta eventually did get the game in 2008. Phoenix is still waiting. We'll wait and see what happens in Columbus. But it's probably a safe bet that they'll get the next one — whenever that may be.
That's all for the first edition of NHL JerseyWatch 2013. Check back for regular updates on the blog as they're available.

NO MORE ORANGE IN SAN JOSE. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE. I've seen more concepts on this site in the past 6 months that look better than their current jerseys.
Also, hope you got the tweet about the george Gund patch/stickers, Chris.
I take it the canucks don't have anything planned for the future? Maybe making the black '94 jerseys or the 40th anniverseries their alternates?
As a huge Flames fan I can tell you nobody complains about the awesome retro third jerseys. I suspect if the rumour is true the Flames will be using the black third jersey they had in the works that never saw the ice a few years back. I do hope your right and they keep the retro as a fourth jersey for occasional use.
Hopefully the Canes are getting rid of those awful shoulder stripes.
Phoenix getting an All-Star game is kind of dependent on the Coyotes staying in Phoenix... and until Greg Jamison's closed that sale, I consider the franchise's future to be still very much up in the air.
Buffalo - Wonder what they do since this isn't a throwback
Calgary - Why?
Carolina - I think it's about time. They need updating but it's good the third jersey is staying
Dallas - So happy they're getting new jerseys. It's been a pain watching one of my favorite teams in such atrocious sweaters
Minnesota - Hopefully a white version of the current alt
Montreal - Kind of scratching my head here. I know there may be insignificant changes, but this is just weird
Pittsburgh - Like this move. Maybe a gold jersey?
San Jose - Like this as well. I'd really like to see what they do
What about Ottawa away jersey's
As a habs fan i was hoping for some type of 3rd jersey news. This is slightly less exciting. Some far-out possibilities? Habs go with the "off-white" that has been all the rage, new fabric cut?, inverting the jersey styles?, blue? none of those will happen with the home, or road. Lace-up collar, imho is VERY lame. It's overused and doesn't suit the modern Habs.
@ Chris,
As a Canucks fan, I have always loved the Flames' 80s red uniforms. I am kind of wondering if the Flames are going the route of the Oilers. There hasn't been mentioning of a matching retro away white uniform, but who knows? There is absolutely no need to copy the Canucks' early 90s look. Remember, though, the Flames also own the CFL Stampeders and we know what kind of "black" disaster the Stamps have with their unis.
On the topic of Vancouver, it is too bad that Stars owner, Tom Gaglardi didn't get to own the Canucks. Seeing what he has in store for the Stars, I am sure he would have gotten rid of the constipated orca logo. It is sickening that the Canucks will not promote their alternate Stick 'n Rink to full-time status or better yet, try a skating Johnny Canuck jersey as a new alternate. A Johnny Canuck jersey with traditional block-style numbering would sell out like crazy.
I love the current Canucks colours/overall jersey look; blue and green suits the team perfectly. I don't have a problem with their current logo, as I find it works well with the jerseys they have. That being said, I've seen a lot of people wanting the Canucks to adopt the old school "rink & stick" logo. Am I the only one who absolutely HATES that logo? It's so basic and unappealing. I wouldn't mind Vancouver adopting the alternate V/Johnny Canuck as their principal logo, but not the C "rink & stick" logo.
Buffalo: Considering this team's recent track record for jerseys, I'm really not expecting much. I really wish they'd forget about making a third and fix the current jerseys by ditching the front numbers and piping.
Calgary: Why in gods name are they worrying about the alternate when their primaries are far and away the worst in the league? Promote the third to primary status with a matching white... Or at least get rid of those tacky flags...
Carolina: Hopefully changes will be minimal. Ditch the phantom shoulder yoke and straighten out the sleeve stripes.
Dallas: Thank god they're going with green. Hopefully the logo is just tweaked and not a full sale change
Minnesota Wild: Keep the Bear head on the road jersey. That logo is just too good to not be featured on at least one of their sweaters
Canadiens: Change the white jersey to the version with the blue stripe.
Penguins: Why all he changes to their alternate when it's their primaries that need a change the most? I know they won a cup in that set but that template is awful.
Sharks: I had feeling a change was in store for this team. If it were up to me I'd simply replace orange with grey on the striping and ditch the front numbers.
Blues still not getting rid of the Bettman Stripes? Argh!
First I've heard of the Sharks new or revamped design for the fall. From the previous couple of playoff home games there was quite a stir that the Sharks will be making the third (all back) uniforms the primary home, and creating a road one to match.
The other possibility that heard through the chatter is the removal of burnt orange from the jerseys. Firstly, I'm not a big fan of the burnt orange. Yes, it does pop more than gray, however, metallic silver would be a more welcome choice to a lot Sharks fans than burnt orange.
I would say there are quite a few Sharks fans that still don't know that the Sharks primary colors are now Teal and Orange with Black relegated to a mere accent/third color. If Sharks fans knew this, they would probably NOT be okay with it.
A few seasons back the Sharks handed orange t-shirts to a playoff home game for people to "orange out" the tank. It was a massive failure and very few wore them. People started complaining that the Sharks were turning into the Miami Dolphins, and I guess now into also the Miami Marlins.
I personally would prefer the Sharks to revert to a Teal/Black color scheme and use metallic silver, or at the very least keep the orange off the jersey except in the logo. I'd also prefer the team to wear teal at home. After all one of their nicknames is "Team Teal" and if that means making a new teal jersey then I'm all for it. I also prefer the bright blue-teal, but then again I'm kinda stuck in nostalgia at the moment.
Finally, I think the Sharks really are contemplating bringing back the old colors at some point. That might include altering and/or changing the logo, and would require new uniforms.
I would say the most popular uniforms for the Sharks were the 2003-2007 jerseys, followed closely by the originals. Anyway hope if true the new uniforms are awesome!!
Darn, I was hoping Buffalo would bring back their original jerseys, hopefully it looks good. I'm hoping the Penguins and Sharks both go back to what they wore in 1991. Their uniforms at the time were nothing short of awesome. I am completely shocked with this JerseyWatch and what the hell is going on with Montreal? Hopefully they are only changing the block numbers on the jerseys if anything. And Calgary? Their retros are the best, hopefully they are being swapped with the home jersey with a new away and Carolina will probably only remove the Shoulder Yolk stripes.
I would love to see a Montreal road featuring the old school blue stripe, that is one of my favourite retro sweaters.
I like sharks as they are, the orange is nice in my opinion, adds a bit of something to the palette, without being too obstructive. I can't envision a major change, the city bleeds teal, it would be silly to change that brand.
All Calgary needs on the third jerseys is some collar strings, I think the flames have some of the nicest jerseys in the league, please don't bring back a black third.... And no more horse heads either.
Pens must be the wealthiest teams in the league with all the jersey revenues... To be honest though I thi k the last 2 winter classic jerseys have been amazing and so I'm excited about what is in store for this year. I'd love to see the return on the diagonal name jersey. I would also like a return to gold from Vegas gold on the home and road.
Overall I'm excited about what's to come.
I'm with you, Andre. I too want the Canucks to adopt the old stick & rink logo -- it's the best logo they've ever had. They team that up with an awesome Johnny Canuck shoulder patch and you've got yourself a damn near perfect uniform! I fell in love with those 40th anniversary sweaters a couple years ago and think that would make for the perfect jersey design, too.
Overall, this news comes as a welcomed "surprise" with most of these teams (especially Dallas & Minnesota). Not sure what to make out of Montreal wanting to make changes to their sweaters... laces or any other small changes would seem rather pointless to me.
I've also got to be one of the few people who don't mind the orange in the sharks uniform. I LOVE their updated logo, and I think orange and teal work very well for a California based team. I always thought the only thing the Sharks really needed to do with their jerseys was to get rid of those goofy front numbers.
Christopher Sprason-the Pens are not the wealthiest team with all the jersey revenue. All jersey sales, like every other sport, is equally divided up between all the teams.
I'm willing to bet the new Habs sweaters simply straighten the arm stripes to no longer follow the cut of the jersey, at least on the red, and perhaps the white will be the version with the blue stripe, also with straightened stripes, similar to NYR or Chicago versus Dallas or the old Edmonton unis.
As a long time Habs fan, I don't think there will be significant changes in the team's uniforms. The owners have to "be kind" with the fans, so we can forget the lame season and the "Gomez affair"... The only big change that would be welcome by the fans - then again not everyone of them - is the road jersey with the blue chest band. The visual problem with that jersey is the red numbers. So I think they might go with a real replica of the 40s (white numbers with blue outline) on the back and within the arm bands. That would force a modification to the home jersey (again, the arm number within the blue band). Other than that, could only hope they change the blue shades of the jersey, helmet and pants so they match!
@ Bill Blazina: agree with you! Laces would be lame!
Surprised about the Sharks, but fans have been complaining about the addition of orange since they came out, so maybe they are finally listening, don't mind it personally though. And as someone else pointed out, lose the numbers on the chest, that trend didn't catch on, especially now that they put numbers on front of the helmets, its just overkill. And I'd go for a different shoulder patch, the main logo and full body version are too similar, maybe go with the newer fin logo that hasn't really been used yet except very tiny in the SJ patch on the 3rds.
Can't imagine what the Flames or Sabres will be doing. Not many options
Please, for the love of hockey god, do not change the Habs jerseys. They are perfect as is.
I'm glad to hear the Wild are going to get a new road sweater. They have a great logo and excellent home and alternate jerseys. A good road one is definitely needed.
I am somewhat disappointed the Avs and Ducks aren't listed in this post. The Ducks have one of the worst sets of jerseys in the league (just my opinion). I love the Avs' third jerseys but their home and aways could use be updated a bit.
I wish the Flames would switch the retro jersey to their primary home and road jersey. I have been a flames fan my entire life and have to say that I was never a fan of their jerseys since they dropped the retro in the 90's.
LOVE the Canes and Sharks unis. That's a shame.
Maybe the Flames are going retro full-time?
No laces for the Habs please.
The single best piece of news in here is that a vintage white/antique white/beige the Wild have used forever/whatever it's called road jersey is realistic enough to be under consideration. It might be a tiny step, but anything that moves away from the "color/white" dichotomy is okay by me. It's not 1955 anymore. People can tell colors apart on their TVs.
Agree with TDEUCE. I'm surprised that the Avs believe their jerseys do not need any work...Shocked, in fact. It's a great color scheme... wasted. At this point, we can't still be blaming Bettman/ RBK. Teams have had multiple opportunities to rectify mistakes at this point...
FYI, readers... Check this article out about how teams are responding to the lockout with various deals / discounts.

@LV It's not about all TV... as a player, I find it easiest to play with one team in white and the other team in color (not yellow or gold).
Calgary should do what their enemies to the immediate north did and just adopt their 1980s look outright. I don't think anybody on the entire planet would complain, and Battle of Alberta looks weird otherwise.
Seriously.
Canes have one of the worst logos in pro sports.
Any word on whether or not the Lightning are putting victory stripes back under the arms of the home and away shirts? I'm a traditionalist, and have never liked these new blue duds we've been given. But, if I have to live with it, at least bring back the victory stripes!
BRING BACK THE BLACK! GO BOLTS!
The only changes the Habs should make are ones that look like throwbacks to the 70's: collar on red sweater becomes white and collar on white sweater becomes red, the white gap between the red outline and blue numeral on the white sweater's numbers goes away and the sleeve numbers on the red sweater are moved inside the blue band. Other than that...STAY! On another note, have a good day tomorrow celebrating the return of the NHL, everyone!
@ APPLECLOCK
I'm a die-hard Flames fan and I would complain if the Flames went completely retro. I love the 80's jerseys and the retro third the Flames have but I believe the Flames should leave the full uniform set in the past. I would love it if the Flames made a new set of home and away jerseys using the retro colours and logos but with a new updated design.
I wish the Ducks would scrap the wordmark. Their 3rd was a step in the right direction and would much prefer to see a white version of their 3rd become their away jersey with the alternate taking over the full time duties at home. I am surprised by their lack of mention based on the way they incorporate the 3rd into almost all of their marketing.
Regarding the changes to the Sharks jersey, saw this on the Sharks section of HFBoards, take it FWIW:
"I know a few people that work with Reebok with NHL merchandise.
Prepare for no numbers in front. Here's what I got the birdies to squawk.
The Sharks realized that they wouldn't have the numbers during the Stanley Cup Finals, so they want to drop it.
Along with that, they want to remove the jumping Sharks from the shoulders, and replace them with any of the various unused logos, such as the shield, fin in diamond, or wordmark.
Currently, Worcester uses the wordmark and shield on their shoulders.
They will NOT be removing the orange, they will NOT be changing the jerseys, as they signed 3 more years of this jersey design, along with the "BlackArmor" jerseys."

The Stars primary logo is not even featured on the current set of jerseys, so they haven't been wearing that design since Minnesota. That would be a shame to ditch this logo. There is no way they will improve on this primary logo. I don't mind color changes, but keep the Stars Logo and put it back on the front.
Rob S: The Stars actually do wear their primary logo on their shoulders. They've never gone a season without it.
I've been hearing rumors about the Ducks making a new road jersey and making their current thirds the home jerseys. Is it more than just a rumor?
@R
I wouldn't be surprised to see the Ducks do this. I've been saying the same thing for 2 years now. They have worn their third jerseys in many of their big games including the 2011 playoffs and their two games overseas last season. Another interesting note, the Jr. Ducks wear that jersey as their primary.
This evidence seems to point to a similar move made by the Kings two years ago. The Kings wore their thirds in the playoffs for 2010 and 2011 and their youth teams wore it and a white matching jersey leading up to promoting it to a full time home jersey.
Thanks Taylor. :D I have been seeing their third jersey so much on TV, during the playoffs, and on the internet that it is almost as if their current road and home uniforms don't even exist. I'm surprised that they aren't on Reebok's list for jersey changes this year. Also, I saw an infomercial for Lightning tickets and I noticed the players were wearing their home jerseys but they were wearing the pants, socks, and helmets from their third jersey. I have heard that people don't care for the lack of black on the their new uniforms so I'm wondering, could that be a sign of what's to come?
when is the next one
Lately, I have been hearing that the Sharks will change their home and roads and remove the orange completely. I also hear that the Sharks will have a new teal third jersey. I know that there was someone who mentioned everything about the Sharks was staying the same except they were finally dropping the front numbers and going with a new shoulder patch. Are these new rumors true? Or is this nothing but a load of crap?
