Flames Preview New Sweater

Arena teaser video reveals Oct. 27 launch date

We got our first look at the new Calgary Flames third jersey more than a week ago by way of that accidental NHL 14 leak. The team officially acknowledged the upcoming uniform for the first time last Friday with a teaser video played for fans at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

You may note that the team first promoted its new jersey while playing New Jersey. I'm sure there's a pun to be made if it hasn't already.

But the point of this blog post is to show you that video. While I haven't seen it on the Flames' website, Icethetics reader and occasional concept artist Caleb Fuller managed to capture the video from the scoreboard on his phone.

Take a look and then we'll break it down frame by frame.

It's short as most of these teaser videos are, but it gives us enough to prove the NHL 14 leak accurate.

The first shot we see is the black flaming C on a red background. We know from the leak they're cleverly framing out the new script that adorns the crest. Next is a close-up of the collar. It's a new style from Reebok which actually features a different color behind the laces.

Then it's a sneak peek at the new number and letter styles. Looks like sleeve numbers on the left — probably Curtis Glencross' No. 20 — and a name bar on the right. That appears to be a G with an I next to it. Probably looking at the jersey of new captain Mark Giordano there.

Up next is the new striping pattern along the waist. It's not like anything we've seen from Calgary before, but it definitely falls in line with the leak. But then something that doesn't. On first glance, it looks like a close-up of the new shoulder patch. But look again.

On the shoulder shoulder patch in the leak, one of the mountains in the middle is formed by a stylized F. There's no F here. But the way the material curves suggests to me this could be Reebok's infamous "hanger effect." This design may be on the inside of the collar, borrowed from the new shoulder patch. But that's just a guess.

Apparently, we'll find out for sure on Sun., Oct. 27. The final frame of the teaser video shows us the date, which is presumably when the new sweater will launch. But the Flames don't have a game that night. In fact, their next game after that date is Wed., Oct. 30. Will we see it on the ice the first time then?

We'll likely get more information over the next few weeks, so stay tuned!

It's not the first time the Flames have teased a new jersey with the place name.
Back before they unveiled the black sweater with the horse head, the team ran ads in at least one local newspaper (Sun).

I recall one saying something like "Flames moving to New Jersey," with the font being all upper-case, so as to hide the fact they werent talking about the state.
Another ad framed the horse head's ear tips in a way it looked like the horns of NJD, plus text saying "new jersey, you say?"

I grew up in Calgary, so that marketing campaign resonated with me. My Flames jersey is the 90s home white, with the diagonal stripe. It's ugly, but shows commitment. :)

As much as other readers of this blog are hating on this jersey (before even really seeing it) I think it's going to look sharp.

That's a whole lot of detail for something used for the hanger effect. But if it's not from the inside collar, where else could it be? The ends of the sleeves?

@bowsering I have that same white jersey, I'm actually a fan of it. Also have the horse head one, I'm in the minority of people that actually like the black integrated with the Flames colors.

Reveal for the Halloween game? Appropriate.
Definitely a good way to scare fans away from the dome.

This new jersey with the word mark is going to be horrible. Word marks should not be used in hockey along with numbers on the chest. Really bad look for a team with great history of jerseys. Bring back 3rd jersey and make a white version and call it done.

Unintentionally revealing the jersey really takes the steam away from the tease.

Well, based on the EA leak, the new jersey is evocative enough of New Jersey's jerseys, so why not tease them against New Jersey?

They should just substract the wordmark for just the Flaming C, and make it the new home jersey.

Hmm while I'm not a huge fan of the script if it is definitely used, I really like what they did with the lace up. I like how its black from the shoulder yoke all the way down the collar to the laces. And whatever that new design is (looks like the tip of a mountain/the Rockies to me) would look really sick if done right on the ends of the sleeves or even the hem.

Can't wait to see it in a couple weeks.

I don't really have anything different to add to what I said during the last post about this, but I will say this: there is no reason that last year's alternate isn't their current home uniform, with a matching white version. there's just no reason at all. this team doesn't need any jerseys other than those two. this stupid Reebok thing took one of the sharpest-looking uniforms in the league and turned it into, pretty much, a mess. they started getting it right in 2009 with their 30th anniversary throwback, and now they need to keep with that and make it their primary.

The problem with this sweater isn't so much the sweater itself, but the glorious third it's replacing. Honestly, the third the Flames have been running out there the last few years, with the white flaming C, is one of the best in the league. So even if this is an average sweater, it's such a large drop off.
