Flames to unveil third jersey at Flames Fest

Got a handful of items today, so I'm condensing them into this post.

First, the Calgary Flames sent an email to season ticket holders last night, inviting them to the first ever Flames Fest on Oct. 27. And getting a starring role at the event will be the unveiling of the team's new third jersey. (In fact, it's mentioned four times in the email!)

Specifically, the jersey will be officially unveiled at 1:30 PM MT (or 12:30 PT, 3:30 ET). Of course, if you can't wait, there's always that leak from a couple weeks ago.

Thanks to Ryan C. for sharing the email.

Ducks to wear fifth jersey to Stadium Series game

In a previous post, I wondered aloud whether the Anaheim Ducks would simply wear the eggplant throwback again in January for their Stadium Series game against the Kings. We now have definitive word that they will not.

According to tweets to fans from Adam Brady, the Ducks' Director of Publications and New Media, the team will have a completely different uniform for the Jan. 25 game — making it the fifth jersey the Ducks will wear this season on top of their home, road, third and last weekend's throwback.

Thanks to Matt Baldock for pointing me to this tweet.

There are also rumors — which may have started with an employee of the team store — saying that the Stadium Series jersey will be primarily orange and feature a version of the throwback Mighty Ducks logo. Probably not unlike what's currently used on the shoulder patch of the third jersey.

I can't imagine we'll have to wait too much longer to start seeing Stadium Series jerseys. Perhaps closer to late November? All seven teams are expected to have them, including the Ducks, Kings, Rangers, Islanders, Devils, Penguins and Blackhawks. (We're also waiting on the Canucks' and Senators' Heritage Classic sweaters.)

Do Lundqvist's Stadium Series pads preview jersey?

Henrik Lundqvist BlogSpeaking of the NHL Stadium Series, the New York Rangers will actually play two outdoor games this winter — but I'm only expecting one jersey from them. And Rangers fans may have gotten a sneak

Icethetics reader John F. sent in this photo (right) via Facebook. The photo appears to have been first posted almost a week ago by The Henrik Lundqvist Blog.

Unfortunately, while the writer said the photo was found on Twitter, no source link was provided.

There was also no information about the context of what we're seeing. Where/when was the photo taken? We don't know. Maybe someone reading can help out there and offer a little background.

On the table there's a card that reads:

Henrik Lundqvist
New York Rangers

Stadium Series
Yankee Stadium - January 26, 2014

So it's definitely a recent shot.

All that said, what's interesting about these pads is the striping pattern. While it definitely screams Rangers, it's not like anything they've worn recently.

I can't tell if it's the lighting, but the pads appear to be an off-white color. Vintage white. My favorite. But the heavy use of the Rangers' shield logo suggests we might see used it on a jersey for the first time ever. (The shield was different in 1978 and the 2012 Winter Classic.)

If nothing else, this might be good for another concept artist challenge. Who wants to create a jersey based on Lundqvist's pads?

Bruins throw back to 1940s with Milt Schmidt

Finally, here's one that slipped under the radar a bit. The Boston Bruins paid tribute to Milt Schmidt and the 1940s team on Monday afternoon as part of their 90th anniversary celebrations.

Photos from Boston Bruins

The 95-year-old ex-Bruin stepped onto the ice for the ceremonial puck drop sporting a replica of the sweater he wore way back in the mid-1940s — with the 90th anniversary patch stitched on. (Two minutes for tucking it in, though.)

The scoreboard was also decked out in the 1940s "B" logo, as seen in this photo tweeted by @KyleClauss

Seeing Schmidt in that sweater led some to wonder whether the Bruins would make a good opponent for the Capitals at the 2015 Winter Classic. (Yes, I know they've taken part before.) If so, this would be a great jersey to go up against the Caps' classic red look. What do you think?

Those eggplant-jade pads behind the Lundqvist pads aren't what the Ducks wore earlier this week.

Love the old Boston sweater and would make a sweet "Winter Classc" look. How about the 'B' on the sleeves. Neat.

Gota love when so much word gets out like today. I'm glad the Ducks are most likely going to use the retro logo on the crest however the colors may clash. Unless the jersey is a dark red-orange that yellow-gold behind the mask may get lost on a bright orange jersey. I'm also not sure if I'm a fan of an orange jersey, it'll be cool to see what they do with it but to me Orange is the look of the Flyers. Anyway as for the Rangers and Hanks pads, I have a feeling the jersey will be that vintage white (I'm getting tired of it myself lol) with hem and sleeve stripes as we see it on the leg pad and as you mentioned Chris the Shield will most likely find it's way on the crest. If you look closely behind his pads it looks as though there's a table with the white, teal, and purple pads Viktor Fasth was seen wearing in the Ducks practice b4 their throwback game. Wonder what that's all about?? Can't wait to see all these out-door jersey's surface, hopefully they don't all share the same generic template/style and are all somewhat unique.

Those aren't the pads that you saw worn in the game because those are Fasth's. Hiller played, however.

As far as the Rangers crest goes- they HAVE worn their current crest, back in the 03-04 season http://www.ty-comemorabilia.com/227BarnabyJersey.htm

Any chance you're going to run a minor league (Canadian Hockey League) jersey update anytime soon?

One thing I noticed is that with all the with all the talk of the "new" square cut shoulders is that it appears the the Brampton Battalion were previously wearing this cut (prior to their move to North Bay) .... http://lpunkari.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/ept_sports_juniorhockey_experts-362564423-1292028042.jpg .... I wonder what other cuts may be lurking in the minors?

@Nick
Fasth wore them, but Hiller played, so you didn't see them.

This would not be the first time the Rangers wear the current shield on a jersey. Everyone seems to forget, but 10 years ago the Rangers wore those "vintage" jerseys with the shield logo on it. I can't find an on ice photo of it, but here's a link to the white and blue jerseys. As a Rangers fan, I would much prefer to see them wear the liberty jersey again instead of the shield logo.

The Lundqvist pads are a display from a Bauer sales rep event held last week in Florida. Not a definite clue to anything as there were many mock-ups for many Bauer goalies.

How awesome would it be to see the orange Ducks going up against the purple Kings? I know it's a bit more than a long-shot, but a fan of colourful sports uniforms can dream, can't he?

Oct 17 · 8:24 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterTorontoSharksFan

Finally Lundqvist is gonna have good looking pads. For such a good looking dude playing on a team with gorgeous uniforms, he's insisted on using the ugliest equipment.

Oct 17 · 11:40 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterGuy

@ Chris: If those pads are any indication, the Rangers will just go with their previous WC jersey. Have you forgotten about this one?

I hope the Rangers don't go with the crest on their chest again this year. I thought the winter classic jerseys were good looking and all but it would be cool to see that vintage look with the vertical lettering.

That design is their classic, iconic look and should get some outside play.

Oct 18 · 8:20 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterThe Shivering Sands

@Brian Brideau: Of course not, but if recent history has told us anything, the Rangers are unlikely to recycle an old Winter Classic jersey. That's why I expect something new. Plus, the striping on the pads is unlike what we see on that 2012 jersey.

Oct 18 · 11:28 AM PDT | Registered CommenterChris

That s the same striping the rangers used on the winter classic arms, maybe we'll see a vintage white with the current shield and no yokes...however a friend of mine who's on the inside with the devils says the devils may be wearing the 1980s white sweaters, so maybe the rangers will be dark with vintage white? Lundqvist wears light color pads with dark sweater when they're at msg so it's not unusual to see that combo

Those Lundqvist pads are beautiful. Pretty similar to Harding's or Rask's pads. Not flashy, just classy. I'm glad that look is gaining traction.

Oct 18 · 10:08 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterKurt

I think the pads are vintage, as the logo on the pads seem to be a regular white.

Uh, the John Ferguson era uniforms, anyone? There might have been a minor tweak or two to the shield, but it's essentially the same, and they did wear it on the front of their uniform.

Oct 20 · 10:28 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterZeus

Actually, the Rangers wore shield jerseys for two years under the stewardship of John Ferguson in 1976-77 and 1977-78 - as seen here http://www.nhluniforms.com/Rangers/Rangers.html

@GUY Rangers have beautiful jersey's!? Rangers have one of the worst in the league dude.

Oct 21 · 7:29 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterCodezer0

Fun Fact: Milt Schmidt also GMed both the Bruins and Capitals at some point in the 1970's.

He was the Caps founding GM too.

Any news on when the Outdoor Series jerseys will be unveiled? Seems like if they don't strike soon, they'll miss the holiday buzz.
