Canucks Celebrate Millionaires

Photos by Severin Samulski via Fort Nucks

How long have we been waiting for this?!

The Vancouver Canucks revealed some great news today. As part of their season-long tribute to the 100th anniversary of pro hockey on the west coast, the Canucks have unveiled a Vancouver Millionaires jersey — modeled above by Ryan Kesler.

So when will this jersey see game action? That's not entirely clear, but I'll get to that in a minute. First, the reason this unveiling came today is that the Canucks will wear their third jersey tonight — a third jersey that will feature a special Millionaires patch on the front.

Here are some details from the press release:

The Vancouver Canucks are proud to announce they will celebrate 100 years of hockey on the West Coast by wearing the Vancouver Millionaires “V” patch on their sweaters for select home games in the 2013 season beginning tonight versus the Chicago Blackhawks.

The Vancouver Millionaires were the first professional hockey team on the West Coast, playing in the Pacific Coast Hockey Association from 1912 through 1922. The Millionaires won the Stanley Cup in 1915 against the Ottawa Senators of the National Hockey Association, which later became the NHL. The Millionaires played at the 10,500 seat Denman Arena built by Frank and Lester Patrick at the corner of Georgia and Denman and were the first Canadian team to play hockey on artificial ice.

The Canucks will wear the “V” on the front right chest of their sweaters in honour of Vancouver’s original hockey heroes such as Fred “Cyclone” Taylor, who was a member of the Stanley Cup winning Vancouver Millionaires squad.

To my knowledge, the Canucks have not yet released their third jersey schedule.

Now back to that Millionaires jersey at the top of the post. A line in that press release may indicate that the Canucks are planning to wear it in a game next month.

Check back often for more exciting Millionaires news as the Canucks continue to honour Vancouver’s hockey roots, particularly in-game March 16th as the Canucks host the Detroit Red Wings.

There's no reason Reebok would produce this jersey if there was no intention to wear it in a game. Looks like we may get it sooner rather than later. Mark your calendars for Sat., March 16. That could be one nice looking hockey game if true!

Not terrible, but I don't really like the beige pants. Reminds me too much of the Flames Heritage Classic, which I consider a massive fail.

Speaking of Millionaires...I haven't heard much from you, Chris, about the potential for Seattle to pick up an NHL franchise (Phoenix?).

Would love your design perspective on what a Seattle-based NHL franchise could look like (personally I'd kill to see the NHL franchise working from the Sounders/Seahawks color palettes).

Thoughts?

Didn't the Vancouver Giants wear these a couple seasons ago?

Beige shorts are fine. It's a heritage concept anyway, it's not like they're going with those full time.

Seattle Pete: I did address that a bit last year when the arena plan started coming together.

Surprisingly, not so much a fan.
I'm sorry but beige pants are horrible... and even after the Flames Fail, it just feels like they (reebok?) are pushing for them to happen.
Secondly, I don't know... this whole burgundy thing just doesn't say Vancouver Canucks to me. The Millionnaires were a different franchise, in a different league... Why do we have to mix it up?

@Adam - the Giants did wear these about 5 or 6 years ago, beige pants and all. I think that was the last Giants game I went to before moving back East.

Also, as a Canucks fan, if they wear this jersey I will buy one in a second. I expect if not this season, they will wear it as a 3rd in 2015, to celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the Millionaires cup win.

i'm a bit of a sucker for throwbacks and these are no exception. these are super cool! especially love the striped sleeves.

Just as Kurt said, I to am a sucker for throwbacks... Canucks, you've opened my wallet.

I heard a rumour about this last year and had been hoping it was true ever since. Soooo "yes"

Feb 1 · 12:22 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterChristine

Very cool! I'm buying one of those jerseys. Also FYI to the other posters, the Vancouver Millionaires wore khaki coloured canvas pants back in that era, so wearing any other coloured pants with this uniform is not an option.

fuck ya!

People, the beige pants are because back in the early days of hockey, pants were initially made of leather, and then after that, natural colored padded canvas. They got the idea of adding stripes before they got the idea of changing the color, for some reason. Couldn't tell you why, but I've seen old pairs in person, they did.

It would be very nice if a team finally had the balls (see what I did there in a discussion about pants?) to actually wear a historically accurate look on the ice. The Red Wings and Flames have both had opportunities where they should have been worn, but have chickened out. IMO, the Canucks need to actually follow through. It's history, and the entire point of doing this is to show how times and tastes have changed.

IMO, the entire getup looks really good. And it has the benefit of actually being right.

I will be ticked off if they wear that Mar. 16 because I'll be in Phoenix and I would kill to go to that game. Hopefully it will be televised down there...

I hope they switch to these full time. The orca has to go.

I don't care what other people think about the beige pants. I think this is awesome and an excellent tribute to the Millionaires. I for one can't wait to see them and on top of that, after all the crap with that Lockout, this is a breath of fresh air.

The 1925 Stanley Cup champion Victoria Cougars were dissolved in 1926 and the players rights were purchased and relocated to Detroit as the Cougars, Falcons and then... Red Wings.

Knowing that the Canucks did a joint retro history night with the Kings in 2010-11 (no name bars)... could we see something similar from the Wings?

I must find a way to get that vintage white pant shell. Those are awesome. Not very fond of the jersey (mainly because of the striping), but the colors and socks are amazing. Wouldn't mind seeing it in a game.

Hate the Canucks but love this jersey

Feb 1 · 8:46 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterBriz

Matt beat me to it. Nobody would just pull that colour of pants out of their ass for no reason. And it's no that this looks like the Flames, it's that the Flames look like this.

Feb 1 · 8:53 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterTyler

Looks good except for NHL reebok style collar, one other thing is that the Canucks are in no way the Millionaires! Teams are starting to get carried away with this idea that just because they played in the same city there is a connection.

Feb 1 · 10:19 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterRob S

I wonder if they are going to have namebars on the back of these jerseys, or if they will follow suit with their 40th anniversary jerseys and go with just numbers?

Feb 2 · 2:31 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterMax

Big meh from me. Take away the history and nostalgia factor and these are pretty bland designs. Not to mention the logo which may as well have been designed by a kindergarten student. The Canucks need to learn that they can honour these past teams without wearing replica jerseys all the time and messing up their already messed up catalogue of jerseys.

The old V is kinda tacky with the solid color. I think the new redesign V patch would be the best option as a main front crest. I find the Letters stand out more. When its just the V outer line and the letters that are white on the blue background. Then it would be Blue outline with blue letters with white background in the middle of it,

Thats a way better V then the old one. This needs to be our long term identity. We are Vancouver. Logo wont get any better then that.

I unstand they want to sell products of the oroginal V Millionares logo. What i dont get is why they made a modern new designed V logo as a patch on the 3rd jersey. Yet are not selling any products under that design. I seriously think that New Modern V logo needs to be our main front logo and call it a day.Very sharp.

That link is what our logo should be.

I think they look absolutely tremendous. Should be made full-time alternate jersey. A perfect no-brainer. Would buy one in a second.
