Sabres Reveal New Captain Letters

The Buffalo Sabres have been listening. Instead of revealing another angle of the same part of their new third jersey, they gave us a look at the redesigned captain patches. And they're pretty interesting.

To get everyone up to speed on where we are with regard to these weekly sneak peeks, I've assembled the giant graphic below. At the bottom you'll find the new photo that was released today.

By the way, in putting this together I realized there is a method to this madness. We've been getting new images once a week, every Thursday since July 12 — except Aug. 8 for some reason. So it's probably safe to say we'll get another one on Aug. 29. But I'm still more interested in an actual release date.

So what do you think? How's the new look shaping up so far?

Yellow letters on a yellow jersey? Interesting choice there. I guess Philly does the same thing with their road whites, and that works just fine. I'd like to see what the nameplates and numbers look like though… or maybe just the whole thing, you know… that'd be nice too!

I'm a huge Sabres fan and loved the Sabres 40th anniversary jerseys. I think this one will be too crazy. It seems they want to go flashy instead of classic. The C and A patches are too much. I wonder who the Sabres new captain will be? They are a very young team so I think it will go to Vanek and Vanek won't be traded. They will resign him.

The new "C" and "A" patches are the first good thing to come out of this whole thing. I'm scared to see what the jerseys actually look like, but the patches are definitely a step in the right direction.

This is prepping to be a fantastic reveal. I have a feeling I'm going to love this jersey. I think it's great that they're going to have a modern looking third to offset their already-solid home and aways.

I haven't liked much of anything that NHL teams have been putting out this offseason with the possible exception of Dallas, but these are shaping up to be great. I love the captain's letters and am always partial to yellow and blue (i.e.: the nice Nashville unit) so I'm hoping between these and the new white Wild sweater the summer can end on a high note of icethetics!

Ya know, when they first talked about a new 3rd I could have sworn they said something alone the lines of it wouldn't be the old blue and gold like we all want, but it would be along the lines of something traditional. if it ends up 2 toned that is the total opposite of traditional. they seem to be going some moderny futuristic route and im really nervous to see it. I do kind of like the C and A. I wonder if the numbers on the sleeves will have the same crossed swords under them.

I have low expectations. Obviously complete judgement is reserved til the actual reveal, but these look like they're shaping up to be a busy mess. Their throwback thirds were so good! Those were the type of jersey that made me want to have one despite not being a Sabres fan.

I agree with Tom, especially about the nashville thing. When you pit all the puzzle pieces together it looks like the jersey will have blue shoulders and maybe the blue will continue to almost the elbow, thats what i saw anyways.

@Almo8930, I don't think there is anything wrong with those C/A patches. New and unique. The only possible issue I can see is them being hard to see on a jersey if the same color, and if they put the jersey number on the front with those, it will have way too much shit on it. IMO.

Aug 22 · 11:37 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterCodezer0

I'm not a big fan of them putting grey in there but overall the jersey looks pretty sweet so far.

Aug 22 · 11:50 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterPete

It's a T-Shirt!

I think my previous guess was right except I didn't see the 7/12 picture, so one change:
The front half of the jersey is yellow
The back half of the jersey is blue
There's a grey stripe splitting the front and back halves
The bottom of the sleeves (the bottom 1/2 or 3/4) are completely greyl
It's a T-Shirt!

when i think about what the final jersey might look like, i get a picture of an old fashioned patchwork quilt in my head!! like a lot of new jerseys, i get the feeling its going to be another 'love it' or 'hate it' kinda thing.....

Aug 23 · 3:43 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterJerseyman

I pretty much have most of the jersey figured out from the photos, but two photos are throwing me off a bit. This is what I have so far and ill explain it the best I can. If anyone agrees and wants to draw it out after feel free to.

Going through the photos from left to right and from the top to bottom...
- Blue shorts with a new Sabres wordmark.
- Blue shoulder yoke and collar with white accents on the collar. The yoke extends slightly below the collars point.
- The blue yoke also extends down the sleeves until the elbows where the rest of the sleeve will be gray. A white stripe will go from the wrist of the sleeve, all the way up, stopping abruptly at the front of the jersey, at the seam where the front panel and the side panel meet (more detail on this in a second). The dark area between the sleeve and the front panel make me believe that the side panels of the jersey directly under the arms will be blue (or maybe even the whole back, not sure if they're going that bold).
- Directly under the collar (you can see a small touch of it at the top of the photo) there will be a small "Buffalo" wordmark written across the front of the jersey just above the logo.
- The jersey will use the regular Sabres logo and the sleeve has been placed directly on top of the front of the jersey.
- Here is where I give more detail about that white sleeve stripe from before. I believe this photo has been rotated and if you turn it 90 degrees to the right, you will see the only part of a jersey that this seam pattern matches is where the front panel meets the side panel at the shoulder yoke (as seen in the sharks template, http://nhluniforms.com/Sharks/Images/Sharks16.png). So again, the white stripe runs up the entire sleeve, along the extended blue shoulder yoke, and stopping at the seam of the front panel on each side of the "Buffalo" wordmark.
- Under that, the first half-sized picture, we have what I'm sure again is the sleeve resting on top of the front of the jersey as the pattern of the yellow changes from the sleeve to the front since it is a different material.
- This is my first uncertainty. Obviously we have the front of the jersey, at the bottom where the handles of the logo are. What is confusing me is the white that we see on the side looks screen printed on like the old jerseys used to be. Flash of white up the side of the front panel? How and where does it end? Not sure on this one.
- Finally, my second uncertainty. I would like to say that the sleeve is resting on top of the jersey where the side panel is blue and there is a bit of white on the front panel, but the first uncertain photo already shows white on the front of the jersey in a different material. So is this the back of the jersey in blue? Or maybe it is another rotated photo showing the back of the blue shoulder yoke and a white horizontal stripe framing the bottom much like the Bruins?
- And of course the new Captain and Alternate patches.

So that's what I think, anyone agree? And anyone care to help me figure out those 2 photos that are throwing me off? I am pretty certain with everything else though.

I'm still pretty apprehensive about how the new jersey is going to look, but I'm REALLY loving the new "C" and "A" insignia !!!!!

Aug 23 · 7:03 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterR. Doyle

Just reveal the jersey already.

Aug 23 · 7:40 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterJeff

The captain's letters are fantastic. The jersey itself is looking like a bit of a clusterf*** though.

Aug 23 · 8:40 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterJL

This jersey seems like there is way too much going on. I can't see how this is going to all come together in anything cohesive. Each teaser they show is worse that the one before. I have a feeling this jersey is going to be awful.

Aug 23 · 9:14 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterMike

This is shaping up to be a Franken Jersey. Google it.

Aug 23 · 9:17 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterMike

The captaincy patches are way too gimmicky and the sabres do not match that on the logo so it looks dumb. This jerseys seems much too flashy but perhaps the kids will love it and that is all you need!

Aug 23 · 9:20 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterS.Menecola

I think the patches look silly. I think they'll make the jersey look really cluttered and minor league-y

Aug 23 · 9:21 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterRandy

This will be pretty bad

Aug 23 · 12:28 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterJacob

Oh man, this is shaping up to be THE ugliest, tackiest piece of you know what the NHL has ever seen !!!!!!

Aug 23 · 12:41 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterVaytch

The captaincy letters look nice. Too bad the rest of the jersey looks like it's going to be a mess.

Aug 23 · 12:51 PM PDT | Unregistered Commenterantonn

Still on the brink on how I'm going to feel on the overall look but I'm loving the captain letters and the logo on the pants! We shall see but hopefully they'll just unveil this thing in the next week or 2.

Aug 23 · 2:59 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterJoe

It's like a gruesome massacre told slowly in reverse.

Aug 24 · 12:24 PM PDT | Unregistered Commenterel

Look in the bottom right corner of the 2nd picture and you'll see yellow. I am almost 100 % sure there are navy shoulders. I think this jersey can look amazing but im not sold on navy on the back and i dont believe that will happen. I think this jersey will be somewhat similar to the old preds jerseys. Remember the ugly t-shirt jerseys?

Aug 24 · 1:29 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterPERSON

I kinda like the C and A, but I have to reserve judgement until I see the full jersey. I really liked their anniversary jerseys. Sorry they won't be returning as a third.

Aug 24 · 6:05 PM PDT | Unregistered Commenterward09

The jersey and captain patches look to be right in line with the rest of this franchise. Awful.

Aug 25 · 8:46 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterErik

The picture from 8/15 seems like it is the blue shoulder yolk with the white piping. Rotate it 90 degrees clockwise. The white piping stops where the front and side panels meet, just as Eddie stated, with the BUFFALO wordmark just out of the picture. It then has a sleeve folded over on top of the front of the jersey.

Look...I'm a Sabres diehard. I buy jersey after jersey in every color, pattern, and design they make for this team. THIS JERSEY TERRIFIES ME! I love yellow, it's my favorite color, but why is this thing so busy? Multiple patterns, different materials, circular logos, block patterns, vertical and horizontal striping? What is this thing going look like? Reebok employs a bunch of fashion flakes apparently. Possibly these experts are better suited for HGTV? Don't get me wrong, I'm gonna buy it, but I might look like a "special ed" Big Bird.

Aug 25 · 11:42 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterWilliam Johnson Jr

Where did this whole idea of a "Two-sided" jersey come from? A jersey half blue/half yellow, I wonder who came up with that...

Aug 25 · 5:03 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterBrian Brideau

I like the captain letter and the idea in general, but all I see in the alternate is the arrow pointing down in the negative space between the letter and the swords.

Aug 27 · 7:08 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterAxis of Weasels

i guess buffalo have gone in the exact opposite direction jersey wise than san jose have, sharks is the plainest it can be to save weight, sabres jersey is looking really heavy in comparison....

Aug 27 · 8:10 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterJerseyman

Considering how cluttered and messy each thumbnail is, I can only imagine how complicated these new jerseys are going to look. I mean, on a closeup you should be able to find SOME aesthetically pleasing patches right?

These thumbnails, combined with the fact that it's the Sabres (seriously, they haven't had one good jersey since 1996) has me really worried for the poor Buffalo fans.

Aug 28 · 2:12 PM PDT | Registered CommenterSpencer Ford

They released a full pic of the pants today. Odd stripping on them, dunno how it ties into the jersey or if it provides any clues really.
