Capitals Hosting 2015 Winter Classic

Opponent, location and uniform designs still unknown

The Washington Capitals officially announced this morning that the American capital will play host to the NHL Winter Classic on Thu., Jan. 1, 2015. But that's about all they revealed.

Still unknown are the opponent, location and uniform designs for the game. But in the press release on their website, the Caps said that all of this will be announced "in the coming months."

Until then, there's only speculation. I know we started this a little yesterday, but now that it's official, who would you prefer to see the Capitals face and what jerseys should the teams be wearing?

As much as I like the Caps and Ovi, and as much as I understand it's about the money, it's getting annoying and frustrating having the same teams doing the winter classic over and over again. That being said, a Caps-Bruins matchup would be cool. Games between those teams and always really intense.

Ah, D.C., eh? Might be going to that one, it's not too far away. Wonder what venue will be holding it; it'll probably be RFK or Nationals Stadium. Anywho, I can't wait.

As for the jerseys, I can't wait to see what they wear. I'm guessing they'll have no choice but to bring back the blue, black and bronze era. My personal favorite Caps jerseys, I'm pretty sure they're going to bring back any of these. Any one will be fine by me, I'd love to see them revived.

Seems like the perfect opportunity to add a blue jersey to their arsenal in my opinion. Unfortunately, I doubt that the Weagle will be the star of the show as it isn't very "classic", but we can still hope, right?

what jersey should they wear?? well caps are the home team, so they just need to do a red version of the white winter classic jersey that they've got. simple ideas are often the best ones. more importantly should the capitals be involved in another outdoor game, when other teams haven't had that chance yet?? it doesnt seem fair to me.....

Caps vs sens in 2015. Battle of the capital cities anyone?

@ Andrew O. - I agree. Let's cut to the chase ... when the Pittsburgh Penguins are announced as their opponent, will they wear the light blues?! And will Crosby and Ovi perform a figure skating duet at intermission?!

This is absolute bull****

I'd like to see all teams wear white at home,, Hopefully I can get seats for this game, ( live in Jessup MD, 20 mins from DC )
Caps rival teams are NYR , Phil , Pitt & Carolina ,, could be one of them or Boston . I see game at Nationals Park , Not RFK , parking totally stinks . Caps make a special DC type jersey for the game

Supposedly, the two "finalists" are Philly and Boston.

This will be my shocked face when they announce Pittsburgh: =-|

My guesses for this game:

Opponent? Bruins

Jerseys? Washington in red fauxbacks, bruins in chocolate and gold

Venue? FedEx Field. NHL will want to cash in on 80,000+ tickets.

I also think that Providence and Hershey will play in the AHL Classic at Nationals Park.

I wouldn't doubt Pittsburgh as their opponents. The last time they played each other in the Classic, Crosby was out after the 1st period thanks to that headshot by Steckel. This will be their 'make-up' for that.

I'm not a fan of the NHL continuing the trend of every away team playing host 2-3 years after participating in their 1st Winter Classic, however at least they're consistent with it. Now if they do this with every team it'll take like 25+ years to get each team in the WC (I understand there's 6 additional outdoors now, but none are as special as the WC).

As for uni's if they wana go retro the only routes they can take are the Red 80s versions of what they wore 2 years ago or the late 90s-06' White, blue, gold, & black. I'd love to see the Red or all Blue jerseys

Great. Another retread team. I getting sick of seeing the sane tans over and over and over. Why not like Minnesota? I know. It's about money. As long as they don't play PIT/CHI/DET/PHI/NYR then whatever.

I know it's a longshot but I really hope the hurricanes get to be in this one, canes vs caps games are always intense. Then the canes could get a descent jersey! I'd make the drive from Raleigh to see that in a heartbeat! Probably will never happen, its most likely going to be the bruins or flyers, maybe the canes will get to play in a stadium series game, but I can't see us hosting it.

My dearest Sidney just needs to check his schedule to make sure he can do it. You guys will be the first to know when we confirm.
