Isles Ready for First Game in Brooklyn

Photo by Joe DeLessio / New York Magazine

Special Brooklyn patch seen on jerseys in team store

For the second time, the New York Islanders will attempt to play an exhibition game at Barclays Center — their future Brooklyn home — tomorrow night.

The inaugural Brooklyn game was scheduled to take place last year during the preseason on Oct. 2. But we all remember the lockout, right? So they're trying again this weekend. Above you can see the variations of the Brooklyn logo the Isles have been using to promote the event.

Interestingly, the newer one can be seen as a jersey patch in the team merchandise store at Barclays Center. The photo was included in a New York Magazine piece by Joe DeLessio. Does this mean the players will be wearing them tomorrow?

A lot of readers have been emailing and tweeting that photo to me so I wanted to get it on the record in comparison to last year's which went unused. The biggest question: Will this be the new Brooklyn shoulder patch when the team moves? I highly doubt it.

This is a marketing logo designed for a specific event. It's essentially the same design we've seen from the Islanders art department for every special event logo over the last few years. When a new shoulder patch is designed, I'm sure it'll be something a little more creative and timeless in style.

Unrelated: Caps to host 2015 NHL Winter Classic?

I don't think it warrants an additional blog post just yet, but the Washington Post and USA Today are reporting that the Washington Capitals will host the 2015 NHL Winter Classic. According to the Post, the announcement will be made tomorrow morning. If that's the case, I'll have a blog post then with all the pertinent facts.

In the meantime, feel free to speculate. What should the Caps wear for their second outdoor game? And who should their opponent be?

I am so confused why Minnesota, the state of hockey, has not been a host for the winter classic. They have beautiful Target Field and the weather wont be a problem there. Im not even from the area, and I have never been there but I cannot understand it.

The Capitals don't have such a huge selection of jerseys to wear... unless they come up with a new one like Philadelphia and New York did.

I would like them to wear their 90s blue jersey but I don't think it's been long enough since they ditched it to have the "classic" feel, so we will probably see their old red jersey.

As to their opponents, I am hearing Pittsburgh (again), Montreal, or Philadelphia. Since I doubt the league will go with 2 Canadian teams 2 years in a row, it's probably going to be between Pittsburgh and Philly.

Elliotte Friedman and Sean Leahy have been reporting on Twitter that there'll be a Winter Classic, 3 or 4 Stadium Series games, and potentially a Heritage Classic in 2014-15'. Clearly the novelty of these outdoor games is wearing off quickly in favour of television revenue for the NHL.

I agree I would like to see the Capitals where the Blue Eagle uniform but am expecting them to wear their old red uniform which I also like. The Capitals will not play Pittsburgh IMO since that has happened they will most likely play the Flyers but I could see the Ranges given their last few years in the playoffs.

Seems like it would be natural for DC to wear the red version of their current throwbacks. For what it's worth, the Caps just had an alumni game where they wore the old red sweaters (non-Edge versions).

Still waiting on Denver... :(

Montreal, New Jersey, Ottawa, St. Louis would be my picks, in that order.

I would say Minnesota or Winnipeg but I'd rather see those too teams face off and build some more rivalry. Also getting kind of tired of the Winter Classic just being in the East for the same handful of teams. I get the need to publicize the teams with the "star" players but it makes more sense to use one of the popular teams against a smaller market team to build awareness.

I'd like to see the Caps do a blue variation of their original jerseys.

Philly or Ottawa - Philly going back to there Patrick division days and because of American history of these 2 cities or the Battle of Canada and the US capitals i think this one maybe a bit more of a long shot, but getting tired of the Penguins having to be in all of these and considering the Pens are in one in 2014 against the Hawks.

Could we see a modification of this NYI Brooklyn patch as the main logo for a third jersey for home games in Brooklyn? Hmm...

I know the Hurricanes haven't been around for very long, and maybe 16 years isn't old enough to play in a winter classic, definitely not old enough to host one , but man would I love to go to a canes caps winter classic on the national mall! The two teams were rivals in the late southeast division so it would be a good game , plus that's close enough to me in Raleigh NC I could go to that game. Then maybe the canes would actually get a good looking jersey, (maybe a green whalers inspired jersey?). Probably never going to happen, but I can dream can't I?

I really hate to admit this (I hate Brooklyn and almost all things NYC, and I live there), but that is a PERFECT PATCH...
..;plus: yeah, Why hasn't the NHL gone to Minnesota or Denver? It seems that there is a "members only" feel to the Winter Classic...Buffalo did a great job, and why not a little Canadian v. US feel? One Heritage and one Winter?

I really hope their opponent doesn't come from Pennsylvania. Also, could you imagine if the Capitals went with white pants for this game?

Well since all these teams are getting second and some even third time go a rounds with outdoor games how about bringing the sabres outside again. I know they arnt the best team but come on how many times to we have to see Pittsburgh outside. As far as the other outdoor games next year go Denver , Minnesota , Raleigh ,Winnipeg , St. Louis .
