NHL JerseyWatch 2013

It happens every January. The kickoff of Icethetics' annual NHL JerseyWatch. Every month or so, we collect in one place all of the news on uniform changes working their way through the league's pipeline. As we saw, 2012 was an off year. No big changes to speak of. Not so in 2013.

The reason we always premiere the NHL JerseyWatch in January is because it coincides with the release of Reebok's yearly planning catalog — the document sent to retailers outlining new sweaters that will be available in the new year. Icethetics has gotten wind of the teams on that list — and some of them may surprise you.

As you dive into this post, keep in mind that it's all subject to change or delay. But as of now, these are the NHL uniform changes anticipated for the 2013-14 season.

Sabres have new alternate jersey in the works for 2013

Just yesterday, in the 2013 NHL Season Preview, I mentioned the Buffalo Sabres sending their previous third jersey out to pasture. As it happens, its successor is already in the pipeline.

The news first broke last August when Sabres president Ted Black told Buffalo Business First writer James Fink that a new alternate uniform would be making its debut next fall. "Yes, it will be blue-and-gold and feature the team's beloved original logo," wrote Fink. "What else is on the jersey is still being determined."

Team president says it won't be a throwback

Black has been talking about the new third jersey a little more recently, too. In fact, just yesterday he was on the radio — WGR 550 in Buffalo — fielding calls from listeners when someone brought up jersey designs.

Bruce (caller): Yeah, I was wondering if the Sabres could bring back the royal blue uniforms with the gold stripes and the gold numbers and the original insignia of the Sabres on the shoulders.

Ted Black: We will have a new third jersey for next season. We're still working on the final designs of that. That probably won't be released until the summer. As I say that, it probably leaks out anyway. But, Bruce, it won't look like what you're envisioning. I think that the rest of the jerseys are gonna remain the way they are. From time to time the league does special events and do these retro jerseys so there may be opportunities to showcase the jersey that Bruce is discussing.

Is Ted inviting his Sabres back for a future Winter Classic? You'll recall Buffalo hosted the first one back in 2008 and did, in fact, where a retro white jersey from way back when.

In any case, while Black doesn't say what the jersey will look like, he does say what it won't look like. For those of you, like Bruce, still hoping for that original royal blue getup, forget it. Maybe the 50th anniversary in 2020. But it's not happening this year.

That may seem to go against what was written in Business First in August, but then that article was pretty vague. Will the jersey be blue? Good odds for the Sabres. Will it have the team's primary logo on it somewhere? Also good odds. That happens to describe the last third jersey as well.

I'm surprised to hear Black says the final designs are still being worked on when the deadline for these things is typically the end of December. Maybe they got an extension. Regardless, if it doesn't leak first, we should get our first look at this jersey late this summer.

Reebok says Flames are swapping out retro third

This one definitely gets a big question mark from me. According to Reebok's catalog, the Calgary Flames are apparently eyeing a new third jersey for next season.

The logical question you have to ask is, why? Why dump the brightly-colored retro alternate in the first place? Are fans complaining about it? Are they not buying them? Can't imagine either of those are true. Or that a new Flames third jersey would be any color but black. Which will excite almost none of you.

Here's my hope. Maybe the NHL is wising up to the retro trend and allowing teams a "fourth" throwback jersey. That would allow the Flames to keep their 1980s-style red sweater while also experimenting with a new third design. Then maybe they'll add a few "Retro Nights" throughout the season. On those nights, every team that has one gets to break out their throwback.

But that's all just wishful thinking. Would be nice though, right? And for what it's worth, we've had no confirmation yet from the Flames that a new sweater is forthcoming.

Reebok indicates new home/roads for Hurricanes

That's right, 16 years after leaving Hartford, the Carolina Hurricanes may be getting another uniform overhaul. Or so says Reebok, anyway. The manufacturer is preparing retailers for possible new home and road jerseys. However, the alternate appears to be remaining the same.

There haven't been any rumors about the Hurricanes looking to redesign their sweaters, so it could be that they're just simplifying their designs next season. The fact that the third jersey isn't changing suggests the colors and logos will be left alone for now.

What do you imagine the Canes could have in store for 2013?

Stars changing everything but their name in 2013

The Dallas Stars have been contemplating new uniforms for a couple of years now, but a recent ownership change delayed things a bit. However, all new logos and sweaters are now on track for next fall, according to owner Tom Gaglardi.

During a radio interview back in November, Gaglardi first talked about wanting new uniforms for the Stars. At that point he also mentioned it was possible a new logo would be introduced as well. Around that same time, Stars Inside Edge blogger Mark Stepneski confirmed the team had looked at design proposals.

New look expected to be 'drastically different'

Earlier this month, Dallas Morning News beat writer Mike Heika provided some details about the forthcoming revamp. For one thing, green will be the Stars' dominant color going forward. Black has had that role for most of the past 20 years. He confirmed there will definitely be a new logo along with a drastically different look from the Stars' current branding.

Team may unveil redesign before this spring

Over the weekend, Heika engaged readers in a web chat and answered a couple of questions about the logo and uniform redesign. Here's an excerpt from the discussion:

What do you know about the new jerseys?

I know they were all over the map, and had all sorts of color choices, but that they made a late decision to stick with green. I heard they were very interested in "Eagles" green for a while, but that this prototype is more "Celtics" green. Other than that, I have no idea. I don't know what the new logo looks like, but that will probably make it or break it for a lot of fans.

Will the Stars introduce the new logo and uniform during the season (like Tampa did a few years ago) or wait until the draft?

To be decided. I know Jim Lites is chomping at the bit with all marketing he wants to do, so the guess is they will show you the new uniforms at some point during the 2012-13 season and then start wearing them during the 2013-14 season.

So it looks like we may not have to wait long to see the new designs. Hopefully by now they're completed and just going through the final approval process.

This has got to be the change I'm most excited about. After all, Dallas has needed a new look for a long time. They're still wearing what the North Stars wore their last season in Minnesota.

Wild updating road sweater only in the fall

Just after Christmas, word leaked out that the Minnesota Wild were conducting surveys among fans to determine a new design for their road uniforms. They even had mock-ups to show off — some of which were described in that blog post.

According to one Icethetics reader:

One was a white sweater with the large, Wild head crest on the front, vertical stripes are gone. Replaced with two horizontal green stripes on the arms. The "red was gone" from the shoulder yoke, but didn't specify whether the shoulders had any color left.

The other option was basically a reverse of the current alternates. Antique white base with the Minnesota Wild script and green accents.

The first one sounds better. The final design will probably be revealed some time this summer. My bet is they'll unveil it at the draft and hand it to their first pick of 2013.

Reebok lists new home/road set for Canadiens

Hold everything. That's sacrilege, right? Could the Montreal Canadiens really be thinking about altering their classic home and road jerseys in some way? You wouldn't think so, but there they are on Reebok's list.

In all likelihood, the changes won't be significant. If anything, it'll probably be nothing more than to add a lace-up collar like they used to have in the old days. I can't imagine changing any colors or striping — uniform elements that have almost never been touched. Ever.

It's been a long time since the Habs made any real changes to their uniforms. The red shoulder yoke was added to the white jersey in 1941. They went with a blue chest stripe and no shoulder colors for a few years from 1944 to 1947 before going back to the design we know today.

And as for the red jersey, it has remained exactly the same since the start of the NHL in 1917 — back when hockey sweaters were actual sweaters. And for whatever it's worth they had the lace-up collar going from 1941 to 1975. (All that info gathered from NHLUniforms.com, by the way.)

Penguins ready for yet another third jersey, says Reebok

Guess the Pittsburgh Penguins are ready to have an alternate sweater that didn't originate at the Winter Classic. At least that's what Reebok has slated for the 2013-14 season.

The Pens were featured in the 2008 and 2011 outdoor games — with different blue jerseys each time. And the in seasons following each Winter Classic, the jerseys were adopted as alternates and used another dozen or so times per season. Now it looks like the latest (dark blue) one is getting retired this year in favor of a new design.

I can't imagine we'll get another blue jersey or that Mario Lemieux's Penguins will do anything crazy and super modern. If I were to bet on it, I'd say they roll back the clock a couple of decades to sport something similar to what Lemieux and friends wore whilst leading the team to back-to-back Stanley Cups. But that's all just wishful guess work. It could be anything at this point.

Reebok indicates Sharks revamping home/road uniforms

Reebok's 2013 catalog has one last surprise for us. Like the Hurricanes and Canadiens, the San Jose Sharks are apparently looking at new or modified home and road sweaters for the fall. And also like the Canes, the black third jersey seems to be sticking around.

This is unexpected because the Sharks just got new uniforms (and a new logo) back in 2007. That leads me to think the changes — if true — won't be significant. So what could they be?

Winter Classic staying in Michigan in 2014

Since the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs didn't get to play their big game earlier this month, the NHL Winter Classic at The Big House will likely just shift a season to 2014 — giving the two Original Six clubs another shot at an outdoor match-up.

That means we should get a look at the jerseys planned for this game next winter. In fact, just recently we got a sneak peek in the form of a couple of t-shirts that were leaked by an online retailer.

If nothing else, this probably tells us what the crests and sweater numbers will look like. Though obviously one of these teams will have to wear white — I'm guessing that'll be the Leafs.

No All-Star Game expected in 2014 due to Olympics

Normally, we don't get an NHL All-Star Game in the same year as the Winter Olympics. The league takes a break to allow its players to skate for their countries for a few weeks. In 2014, Sochi, Russia will host the games.

This means Columbus will have to wait until 2015 at the earliest to get its hosting duties back. Though the wait could be longer. During the last lockout, the 2005 All-Star Game was to be hosted by Atlanta. In 2006, Phoenix was slated to get the event — but it was canceled to make time for the Olympics.

Atlanta eventually did get the game in 2008. Phoenix is still waiting. We'll wait and see what happens in Columbus. But it's probably a safe bet that they'll get the next one — whenever that may be.

That's all for the first edition of NHL JerseyWatch 2013. Check back for regular updates on the blog as they're available.

NHL JerseyWatch 2012

August Edition As expected, it's been a quiet summer. This is the first JerseyWatch update in more than three months. That was when Reebok's 2012 planning document for retailers made its way to Icethetics. There weren't really any surprises in it but I got it all on the record just the same.

As with every NHL JerseyWatch update, this post contains all previously gathered information from past JerseyWatch posts. All your 2012 NHL uniform news in one simple blog update. That's how we roll.

Just mind my usual disclaimer that nothing here is official. The team or league will make public announcements when the information is ready to be made official. Until then, this is what we have and your speculation is welcome in the comments below.

Sabres: Anniversary Alternate Retired

The Buffalo Sabres have sported an alternate jersey for the last time — at least for the foreseeable future.

Buffalo News beat writer Mike Harrington tweeted following the game on March 14 that the sweater, which debuted in 2010, was being permanently retired.

At 11:36 PM ET, Harrington wrote, "Alternate blue jerseys with 'Buffalo' script on the front were retired tonight. Won't be worn again."

He then replied to some reader queries, saying, "To all asking: Alternates are done forever, not just this year. Sabres spokesman said team has no plans for an alternate jersey next year."

Harrington's final quote of interest to us read, "It's an anniversary jersey. You have to wear an alternate two years and they've gone their two years."

A little confusing, but what he meant was that the alternate uniform was launched as part of the Sabres' 40th anniversary celebration in 2010. And NHL regulations require a team to use the third jersey for at least two seasons before retiring it. (Though, last I heard it was three years. Maybe that's since changed.)

This team has had its share of identity troubles over the years. In the decade-and-a-half between 1995 and 2010, the Sabres wore four completely different uniform sets. Not the way to build a successful brand. So it makes sense that going forward, the Sabres will not have a third jersey. Maybe things will change down the road, but for now, this is it.

Blackhawks: Third Jersey Confusion

updated Early reports had the Chicago Blackhawks resurrecting their old black third jersey after retiring their Winter Classic-inspired alternate in 2011. Now, that may no longer be true.

Reebok's message to retailers had indicated the Hawks would have no third jersey, just like last season. But more recent updates list a "black" third jersey for the club. But does that mean the 1996 black or the 2009 Winter Classic black?

There is one potential indication. A video featuring Blackhawks draftee Teuvo Teravainen shows the first-rounder in a couple of behind-the-scenes photo shoots and autograph signings in which he's wearing the Winter Classic-inspired sweater. Why produce marketing materials with your newest star wearing a jersey he'll never wear in a game? Unless he will wear it in a game.

All of these details are kind of circumstantial. We'll have to wait until we hear something from the team or see them take the ice wearing something that's not white or red.

Stars: No Changes in 2012

In last year's JerseyWatch, there was talk of the Dallas Stars introducing a green third jersey. But the team's ownership change forced those plans to be put on hold for a while. Now it seems we may get a whole new look in 2013.

Stars TV color analyst Daryl Reaugh went on the record via Twitter last July. He told fans: "[A] new third [jersey] was in the chamber but got shelved in deference to impending new ownership."

Then this year, on March 15, Dallas Morning News writer Mike Heika engaged readers in an online live chat. Someone asked, "any news or whispers about a new alternate jersey coming down the pipe?" To which Heika simply replied, "Nope. I think they will study a completely new uniform in the summer, and then we will see the results of that study with a whole new look in 2013-14."

I, for one, can't wait.

Red Wings: New Winter Classic jersey

Red Wings 1992 retro jerseyThe Detroit Red Wings are hosting the NHL Winter Classic in 2013. So they'll need a new sweater.

If the 2012 Winter Classic told us anything, it's that both teams involved will don special throwback-inspired uniforms, even if they have only the slightest connection to the team's actual history. And for a team like the Red Wings, who haven't really changed their uniforms since 1934, theirs should prove especially hard to predict.

In 2009 when they played outdoors at Wrigley Field, the Wings wore replicas of a uniform used by the franchise when it was shiny and new — way back in 1926. Though then they were known as the Detroit Cougars. The Penguins and Flyers have both played in multiple Winter Classics but neither recycled a Winter Classic jersey.

During the NHL's 75th anniversary season in 1992, the Wings sported a throwback to the late 1920s with lots of red and white stripes — and DETROIT written across the front. If you want my best educated guess, they'll pull those suckers out again in 2013 when the host the Maple Leafs in the elements. If it's not that, I'm out of good guesses.

update Recently, Howard Berger claimed to have the inside track on the Maple Leafs' Winter Classic threads (see below). Now he's tweeted alleged details about what the Red Wings will wear for the game. On Saturday, he tweeted, "Source tells me Detroit Red Wings will wear cream-colored jersey for NHL Winter Classic vs. Leafs. Trying to confirm."

That would certainly be new for Detroit even if it's par for the course for the Winter Classic.

Oilers: Alternate Jersey Retired

Edmonton Oilers fans were happy last summer to see the club add a new retro road jersey to match its home option. Now the last vestige of an awful uniform era is gone.

In their planning documents for retailers, Reebok indicates no third jersey option for the Oilers. However, there is a mistake in the version I've seen. It lists this jersey (right) as the home version. Here in reality, this jersey is being retired, not to be manufactured ever again (hopefully).

In 2007, the Oilers were one of the hardest hit teams of the Reebok Edge era. Their home and road uniforms were plainly terrible and it didn't take long for the team to realize and set into motion some necessary changes.

In 2008, the Oilers launched their royal blue retro third jersey. In 2009, it became the home jersey, relegating the 2007 home jersey to alternate status. In 2010, status quo. In 2011, a white version of the blue jersey replaced the 2007 road uniform, but the navy alternate remained.

Now in 2012, that jersey will go away for good (until it becomes a hip retro jersey 40 years from now). In so doing, Edmonton will probably go without a third jersey at least a year or two — not that they'd need one anyway.

More than a few fans have called for a orange Alberta Oilers-inspired third — a throwback to the club's WHA era. Personally, I've always liked the one Todd McFarlane designed in 2001, but that might be too much to hope for.

Panthers: Alternate Jersey Retired

It's no secret that Florida Panthers brass had fallen out of love with their 2009-debuted "JetBlue" third jersey. And we've now seen the last of it.

Not long after the Florida Panthers announced a partnership with the airline came a new alternate sweater bearing a color scheme that resembled a certain airline branding more than the identity of the hockey club that was wearing it.

Fans didn't like it and lots of comparisons were drawn to the Pittsburgh Penguins' powder blue alternate jersey. But a commitment is a commitment. And after the three long seasons, the Cats are relegating this one to history.

In September 2011, Panthers assistant GM talked to Miami Herald writer George Richards about the sweater and didn't really have anything nice to say it. "As soon as we can rid ourselves of those things, we'll be a happier bunch," said Santos.

He went on to talk about how the Panthers were bringing back the red home uniforms for this season and how their successful years were highlighted by their red uniforms. That still seems to be the case, much to the chagrin of this Lightning fan.

Additionally, Richards said in March the team has absolutely no plans to launch a new third jersey next season. However, it's not out of the question for 2013-14. Jokingly (I hope), he writes, "Expect a dark blue jersey with a different Cat-in-a-Circle logo. Or perhaps the Sunshine/Palm Tree/Hockey Stick logo. Something."

Islanders: Alternate Jersey Mystery

updated There was some question back in May over whether the New York Islanders were already giving up on their new third jersey.

According to Reebok's 2012 retail information, there was no third jersey listed for the Islanders. It just read "TBD" in that space.

It seemed pretty strange considering the jersey just launched last November. And league rules mentioned in that post say teams have to use them for three years before they give them up. (Of course Buffalo dropped theirs after just two.)

Could it possibly be that this jersey was so hated by fans that the Isles were ready to throw in the towel? If Reebok and the NHL weren't cashing in, I could see them allowing this one to be retired early.

Anyway, after some debate over what was happening, the Islanders themselves jumped into the conversation to put the question to bed.

On May 9, the Islanders replied to a fan on Twitter questioning whether the black jersey was going away. They said, "The Isles will wear their black 3rd jerseys during the 2012-13 season."

I have no reason to doubt an official team tweet, so it seems like this "TBD" business was merely an error on the part of Reebok. So if you like the black jersey, you're in luck. If you hate it, well, sorry.

Lightning: Revised Alternate Jersey

updated Back in May, signs from Reebok pointed to the Tampa Bay Lightning replacing their third jersey in 2012.

Those retail planning documents I've been referencing show a nice, big "TBD" where the Bolts' extra sweater should be displayed.

However, last month the Lightning blog Raw Charge learned in an email from the team that the blue BOLTS third would be sticking around, with one minor change.

Team Executive Vice President of Communications Bill Wickett said in an email on Monday [July 30] that the team would indeed employ the uniform again for 2012-13.

Wickett expected the jersey to be used for "12-15 home games" this season. There will be one minor tweak to the uniform though; a more current shoulder patch will be employed.

Last season's jersey continued to feature the Lightning's old (2007-2011) primary logo on its shoulders. It was a time issue that prevented making the change for last season.

It's somewhat disappointing news for Lightning fans. I, for one, was still hoping for a redesigned black third. Maybe it's still an option for 2013?

For a team like the Lightning, it doesn't really make sense to have two blue jerseys. It works for Toronto (it's their only color) and the Blue Jackets (because a team called the "Blue" Jackets can't wear a red jersey). But Tampa hockey fans aren't yet ready to give up black as a part of the color scheme.

After getting fan feedback on the new identity last year, Lightning CEO Tod Leiweke did say that black would be reincorporated into the team's look — though it was too late to substantially change the logo or home and road uniforms that were launched in 2011.

Maple Leafs: New Winter Classic Jersey

The Toronto Maple Leafs just launched a new retro third jersey this season. But it was perhaps a year too soon as they'll need another one in January.

The Leafs will be the Red Wings' opponent in the Michigan-based 2013 outdoor game. It will be the first interconference Winter Classic since the event began in 2008.

update On August 1, Howard Berger reported via a "merchandising source" that the Maple Leafs would be sporting a 1927-style jersey for this year's big game.

Similar jerseys were worn by Toronto for a pair of games during the 1996-97 season (starring Mats Sundin, right). But they didn't include nameplates on the back or numbers on the sleeves. That would definitely be a challenge for the play-by-play guys at the Winter Classic.

Berger usually gets these things right, so I have little reason to doubt him. Of course, that doesn't make it official. We'll still have to wait for word from the Leafs.

Perhaps of note to concept lovers, the Toronto Star recently held a contest asking fans to submit their suggestions for a Maple Leafs Winter Classic jersey. Turned up some pretty ridiculous designs. I think whoever was in charge of assembling this gallery was just having a little fun with everyone.

Jets: No Alternate Jersey Yet

I speculated in previous editions of the JerseyWatch that the Winnipeg Jets might introduce a third jersey as early as their second season in existence. However, according to Reebok, that was just wishful thinking.

It might've seemed a little soon, but there's money to be made on Jets jerseys in Canada these days. Why shouldn't the team keep cashing in? And as cash cows go, could you imagine a better one than a retro sweater for this club?

A proposed design by Jacob Barrette was posted here on Icethetics a few months ago. It got mixed but generally positive reaction. Of course team management seems to want to distance themselves from the previous incarnation of the Jets so that might be less likely even if fans are begging for it.

NHL Special Events

In 2013, the NHL All-Star Game will be hosted for the first time by the Columbus Blue Jackets. That was announced prior the 2012 event in Ottawa. Then on April 27, the team hosted an event to unveil the All-Star logo.

The jerseys, however, remain a mystery for now. Will the NHL recycle their All-Star threads, using them a third time? That hasn't happened since 1997. Or will they create something entirely new for this one? It probably all depends on what Reebok is in the mood for.

Final Thoughts

Are you getting the feeling that 2012 will be a quiet year with regard to new NHL jerseys? A lot of this year's JerseyWatch is talking about what's going away, as opposed to what's on the way. I wish I had better news, but after five straight years of seemingly incessant uniform changes at the hands of Reebok, I think a bit of a lull is probably in order.

That being said, 2013 sounds like it could be a heck of a year on this front. Assuming the Mayans were wrong and we all survive to see it, we'll have a pair of new Winter Classic jerseys, and — if we're lucky — maybe even a new set of All-Star Game jerseys. On top of that, the autumn could bring us new home and roads for the Stars, new alternates for the Panthers and possibly even the Jets.

Finally, and this may just be wishful thinking, the Blues could make a push to give their third jersey the primary treatment. Perhaps even the Flames and Ducks could join that club. The Predators might add a third jersey, though it would be very soon after their rebranding this season. And I'm also keeping my fingers crossed for the Senators and Penguins, who I think could both use a complete uniform overhaul.

By the way, an earlier rumor about the Senators replacing their road jersey next season has been squashed by Reebok. Status quo for Ottawa.

And that's the fourth edition of NHL JerseyWatch 2012. We may have one more update in September, but the way this summer's been going I doubt it. They only thing we're really waiting on now is to see the official 2013 Winter Classic logos and uniforms. As always, keep an eye on the blog for the newest information.

NHL JerseyWatch 2012

May Edition Reebok's 2012 planning document for retailers has finally made its way to Icethetics. There weren't really any surprises in it but I thought I'd get it all on the record here just the same.

As with every NHL JerseyWatch update, this post contains all previously gathered information from past JerseyWatch posts. All your 2012 NHL uniform news in one simple blog update. That's how we roll.

Blackhawks: No Third Jersey

Previous reports had the Chicago Blackhawks resurrecting their old black third jersey after retiring their Winter Classic-inspired alternate in 2011. According to Reebok, that is not true.

Reebok's message to retailers is that the team will continue to sport its standard home and road jerseys and nothing more, just as they did this past season.

It's unclear whether the Blackhawks intend to bring back the third jersey at some point in the future. But at the moment, they're sticking to their brand.

Stars: No Changes in 2012

In last year's JerseyWatch, there was talk of the Dallas Stars introducing a green third jersey. But the team's ownership change forced those plans to be put on hold for a while. Now it seems we may get a whole new look in 2013.

Are the New York Islanders giving up on their new black third jersey already?

There was one surprise as I was perusing Reebok's 2012 retail information. When I got to the Islanders, there was no third jersey. It just read "TBD" in the space where it should've been.

I thought that seemed pretty strange considering the jersey just launched in November. And league rules mentioned in that post say teams have to use them for three years before they give them up. (Of course Buffalo dropped theirs after just two.)

Could it possibly be that this jersey was so hated by fans who refused to buy them that the Isles are ready to throw in the towel? If Reebok and the NHL aren't cashing in, I could see them allowing this one to be retired early.

Again, I'm not exactly sure what's happening yet. Reebok says "TBD." Maybe it means they're considering dumping them. Maybe not. But apparently the decision hasn't been finalized.

Whatever the case, it's something we'll definitely keep an eye on this summer.

UPDATE 5/10 We already have an update on this story. On Wednesday morning, the Islanders replied to a fan on Twitter questioning whether the black jersey was going away.

Lightning: New Alternate Jersey

According to Reebok, the Tampa Bay Lightning may be replacing their third jersey in 2012.

Those retail planning documents I've been referencing show a nice, big "TBD" where the Bolts' extra sweater should be displayed.

Granted, that could mean anything. Perhaps they're dropping the third jersey option for a year while they come up with a new design. Maybe they're still on the fence about whether to bring back the blue BOLTS jersey. But I doubt that.

In fairness, for a team like the Lightning, it doesn't really make sense to have two blue jerseys.

It makes me think a slick black alternate sweater could be on the horizon here. Stay tuned.

Maple Leafs: New Winter Classic Jersey

Maple Leafs 2002 retro jerseyThe Toronto Maple Leafs just launched a new retro third jersey this season. But it was perhaps a year too soon as they'll need another one in January.

The Leafs will be the Red Wings' opponent in the Michigan-based 2013 outdoor game. It will be the first interconference Winter Classic since the event began in 2008.

The third jersey Toronto added this year was inspired by a sweater worn in 1967. The one before that had been in use since 2000 (minus 2007-08) and was based on a much older jersey.

Looking back at their history, the Maple Leafs have a few more options than the Red Wings. But perhaps the most interesting would be their green Toronto St. Pats jersey which was worn for a game in February 2002.

Because the Winter Classic is meant to draw a massive American TV crowd, iconic colors are important. So perhaps the Leafs in green wouldn't be the best of ideas. If you look at the late 1920s and '30s, it's clear the Leafs have some retro designs to work with. Therefore, like Detroit, it may be awfully hard to predict what they go with next winter.

Perhaps of note to concept lovers, the Toronto Star recently held a contest asking fans to submit their suggestions for a Maple Leafs Winter Classic jersey. Turned up some pretty ridiculous designs. I think whoever was in charge of assembling this gallery was just having a little fun with all of us.

And that's the third edition of NHL JerseyWatch 2012. More updates should continue through the spring and over the summer. As always, keep an eye on the blog for the newest information.

NHL JerseyWatch 2012

March Edition Still nothing on the Reebok front. I think they've wised up and decided to play their annual catalog closer to the vest. Either that, or now retailers are in the same boat as the rest of us, wondering what's changing in 2012.

Still, that doesn't mean we're entirely clueless. There are plenty of other sources of information out there. In last month's JerseyWatch, it was all about rumors. This time around, our details are a little more solid.

As always, nothing is official until the team or league makes such an announcement. Until then, feel free to add your speculation in the comments.

Buffalo Sabres

updated

Sabres third jersey / NHL.comAlternate jersey retired The Sabres have sported an alternate jersey for the last time — at least for the foreseeable future.

That blows last month's rumor out of the water, which suggested the Sabres were contemplating a black third jersey for 2012. If they were contemplating it, they aren't anymore.

Harrington's final quote of interest to us read, "It's an anniversary jersey. You have to wear an alternate two years and they've gone their two years."

A little confusing, but what he meant to say was that the alternate uniform was launched as part of the Sabres' 40th anniversary celebration in 2010. And NHL regulations require a team to use the third jersey for at least two seasons before retiring it. (Though, last I heard it was three years. Maybe that's since changed.)

This team has had more than its share of identity troubles over the years. In the decade-and-a-half between 1995 and 2010, the Sabres wore four completely different uniform sets. Not the way to build a successful brand. So it makes sense that going forward, the Sabres will not have a third jersey.

Maybe a few years down the line, they'll have a change of heart. But for now, the rumors end.

Chicago Blackhawks

Blackhawks 2008 third jersey / NHL.comNew alternate jersey The Blackhawks have spent this season without a third jersey. But that could change next fall.

Chicago previously used their 2009 Winter Classic uniform as an alternate over the last two years. But it was apparently unpopular with club management — albeit loved by fans.

It sounds like they will have a third option next season, but they'll be resurrecting a classic rather than reinventing the wheel. It's been reported the black jersey from 2008 may return.

The design was first seen on the ice in 1996 when the NHL began its third jersey program and continued to be worn until the Reebok Edge overhaul in 2007-08. It was subsequently brought back the following season when the league began allowing alternate uniforms again.

It wouldn't surprise me in the least to see this jersey return. It was well loved by fans, and if I'm being honest, it looks great. Would be a winner.

Dallas Stars

updated

No changes in 2012 In last year's JerseyWatch, we talked a lot about the Stars introducing a green alternate uniform. But the ownership issues and subsequent sale of the franchise shelved those plans.

Stars TV color analyst Daryl Reaugh went on the record via Twitter last July. He told fans: "[A] new third [jersey] was in the chamber but got shelved in deference to impending new ownership."

That was really a shame. We were all hoping the Stars would get the chance to add a little more color. But with the change in management, perhaps now is the time to reinvigorate the team's rather dull look. It happened in Tampa Bay last year.

On March 15, Dallas Morning News writer Mike Heika engaged readers in an online live chat. Someone asked, "any news or whispers about a new alternate jersey coming down the pipe?" To which Heika simply replied, "Nope. I think they will study a completely new uniform in the summer, and then we will see the results of that study with a whole new look in 2013-14."

So that's the end of that. For now. But suddenly I find myself very excited about 2013.

Detroit Red Wings

Red Wings 1992 retro jerseyNew Winter Classic jersey The Detroit Red Wings will host the next NHL Winter Classic in 2013. As such, they'll need a new sweater.

If the 2012 Winter Classic told us anything, it's that both teams involved will don special uniforms, even if they have only the slightest connection to the team's actual history.

If it's not that, I'm out of guesses.

Edmonton Oilers

Oilers third jersey / NHLAlternate jersey retired Oilers fans were happy last summer to see the club add a new retro road jersey. Now it seems the last vestige of an awful uniform era will be disappearing.

In 2007, the Oilers were one of the hardest hit teams of the Reebok Edge era. Their home and road uniforms were plainly terrible and it didn't take long for the team to realize and set into motion some necessary changes.

It seems that finally, in 2012, that jersey (right) will go away for good (until it becomes a hip retro jersey 40 years from now). In so doing, Edmonton will probably go without a third jersey at least a year or two — not that they'd need one anyway.

More than a few fans have called for a orange Alberta Oilers-inspired third — a throwback to the club's WHA era. I'm not sure the team is willing to go that far at this point. And for what it's worth, I really don't think they should. But only time will tell.

Florida Panthers

updated

Panthers third jersey / NHLAlternate jersey retired It's no secret the Panthers brass have fallen out of love with their 2009-debuted "JetBlue" third jersey. And we'll see the last of it this season.

Last week, Richards posted more on the subject as the Panthers officially announced this jersey will be retired on Sunday, March 25. The Cats will hold their "Shirts Off Our Backs" promotion that night to get rid of those sweaters once and for all.

Additionally, Richards says he's learned the team has absolutely no plans to launch a new third jersey next season. However, it's not out of the question for 2013-14. Jokingly (I hope), he writes, "Expect a dark blue jersey with a different Cat-in-a-Circle logo. Or perhaps the Sunshine/Palm Tree/Hockey Stick logo. Something."

Tampa Bay Lightning

New alternate jersey This is one rumor I'm not ready to buy into yet, but some think the Lightning are on the verge of replacing their third jersey in 2012.

In fairness, for a team like the Lightning, it doesn't really make sense to have two blue jerseys. It works for Toronto (it's their only color) and the Blue Jackets (because a team called the "Blue" Jackets can't wear a red jersey). So though I'm not convinced it's a real likelihood for 2012-13, it does make sense in a lot of ways.

Toronto Maple Leafs

Winnipeg Jets

New alternate jersey It'll be only their second season in Winnipeg next fall, but can you really be surprised the Jets are already considering third jersey options? Of course not.

It might seem a little soon, but folks, there's money to be made on Jets jerseys in Winnipeg right now. Why shouldn't the team keep cashing in? And as cash cows go, could you imagine a better one than a retro sweater for this club?

A proposed design by Jacob Barrette was posted here on Icethetics a few months ago. It got mixed but generally positive reaction. And if I were to bet on it, I'd say the Jets go with something similar, if not an exact replica of what the old Jets wore in their earliest NHL days.

That is, obviously, assuming the team is ready to add a third uniform. They may not be. Again, we'll have to wait and see what happens.

NHL Special Events

The NHL All-Star Game will be hosted by the Columbus Blue Jackets for the first time in 2013. That was announced prior the 2012 event in Ottawa. Will the NHL recycle their all-star threads a third time or come up with something new? Guess it all depends on what Reebok wants to market.

The Predators might add a third jersey, though it would be very soon after their rebranding this season. Before I go, I should point out I've heard rumblings about the possibility of the Ottawa Senators replacing their white road jersey. That could be baseless, but so could a lot of the aforementioned rumors. Just something to keep in the back of your mind. Though if they change one, they'd be apt to change both.

And that's the second edition of NHL JerseyWatch 2012. More updates should continue through the spring and over the summer. As always, keep an eye on the blog for the newest information.

NHL JerseyWatch 2012: Rumor Edition

February Edition By this time last year, Reebok had already released its planning catalog to retailers for the new season. But so far, I haven't heard a peep about it this year. I could chalk it up to the fact that I've been out of the loop for about a month. But then I haven't seen it on any other websites yet either.

Regardless, that hasn't stopped rumors from percolating about what NHL uniform changes are in store for the 2012-13 season. And while you know I'm usually not a fan of rumors, I'm making an exception in this case. Because how could my first post in a month not be a JerseyWatch report?

All right, so without Reebok, everything you're about to read is speculation, but put through the filter of my experience covering this sort of thing on Icethetics. Still, nothing is official until team/league announcements are made. Until then, feel free to add your speculation in the comments.

Buffalo Sabres

Sabres "black ice" jersey / NHL.comNew alternate jersey At least one source has suggested the Sabres will drop their 40th anniversary blue third in favor of a new one. A black one.

I find that difficult to believe as well, when you consider the team's new ownership seems intent on solidfying the visual identity of a club that's struggled to find one over its history. This would not serve that purpose.

Essentially, the rumor says the black jersey will bear some slight resemblances to the Sabres' "Black Ice" jersey (right). Black Ice is a line of NHL fashion jerseys launched last year.

Again, I'm not sold on this particular rumor. But it's out there and worth a discussion. Black third jerseys were all the rage in the 1990s, much to the irritation of many Icethetics readers. The Sharks, Flames, Flyers and Capitals all immediately come to mind.

Keep in mind the Islanders' new third jersey is black for apparently no reason. Good or bad, are we about to see a resurgence of that trend? Let's hope not.

But it was apparently unpopular with club management — albeit loved by fans and Icethetics readers.

And heck, remember what I just said about black jerseys with regard to the Sabres?

Dallas Stars

New alternate jersey In last year's JerseyWatch, we talked a lot about the Stars introducing a green alternate uniform.

Looking back, Dallas may have been the hardest hit by the transition to Reebok Edge in 2007. They went from having a beautiful and unique set of sweaters to some of the blandest in the league. And green — already in short supply around the NHL — disappeared almost entirely.

It may be a stretch to think that the home and road sweaters could get an overhaul, but we can dream. I do think a new third jersey is much more likely, however.

Detroit Red Wings

Red Wings 1992 retro jerseyNew Winter Classic jersey Technically, it's not official yet, but reports strongly indicate the Detroit Red Wings will host the next NHL Winter Classic in 2013.

If the 2012 Winter Classic told us anything, it's that both teams involved will don special uniforms, even if they have only the slightest connection to the team's actual history. And for a team like the Red Wings, who haven't really changed their uniforms since 1934, theirs should prove especially hard to predict.

If you want my best educated guess, they'll pull those suckers out again in 2013 when the host the Maple Leafs in the elements. If it's not that, I'm out of guesses.

Edmonton Oilers

Oilers third jersey / NHLNo alternate jersey Oilers fans were happy last summer to see the club add a new retro road jersey.

Florida Panthers

Panthers third jersey / NHLNo alternate jersey It's no secret the Panthers brass have fallen out of love with their 2009-debuted "JetBlue" third jersey. And we'll see the last of it this season.

Not long after the Florida Panthers announced a partnership with the airline came a new alternate sweater bearing a color scheme that resembled a certain plane design more than the identity of the hockey club that was wearing it.

He went on to talk about how the Panthers were bringing back the red home uniforms for this season and how their successful years were highlighted by their red uniforms. That still seems to be the case, much to the chagrin of this Lightning fan.

As for the future, the Panthers may once again look to navy blue for another third jersey. But for now, I think they'll be joining the ranks of the two-jersey teams for a while.

Tampa Bay Lightning

New alternate jersey This is another rumor I'm not ready to buy into yet, but some think the Lightning are on the verge of replacing their third jersey in 2012.

In fairness, for a team like the Lightning, it doesn't really make sense to have two blue jerseys. It works for Toronto (it's their only color) and the Blue Jackets (because a team called the "Blue" Jackets can't wear a red jersey). But Tampa Bay isn't yet ready to give up black as a part of the color scheme.

It makes me think a black alternate sweater could be on the horizon here. (And that "black" theme continues...)

So though I'm not convinced it's a real likelihood for 2012-13, it does make sense in a lot of ways.

Toronto Maple Leafs

Maple Leafs 2002 retro jerseyNew Winter Classic jersey The Leafs launched a new third jersey this season. But maybe it was a year too soon if the Winter Classic rumors prove true.

It's been reported the Maple Leafs may be the Red Wings' opponent in a Michigan-based 2013 outdoor game. It would be the first interconference Winter Classic since the event began in 2008.

The third jersey Toronto added this year was inspired by a sweater worn in 1967. The one before that had been in use since 2000 (barring 2007-08) and was based on a much older jersey.

Looking back at their history, the Maple Leafs have a few more options than the Red Wings. But perhaps the most interesting would be their green Toronto St. Pats jersey (right) which was worn for a game in February 2002.

Before I go, I should point out I've heard rumblings about the possibility of the Ottawa Senators replacing their white road jersey. That could be baseless, but so could a lot of the aforementioned rumors. Just something to keep in the back of your mind.

And that's the first edition of NHL JerseyWatch 2012. More updates should continue through the spring and over the summer. As always, keep an eye on the blog for the newest information.
