Expansion Logo Submissions

The 2012 expansion of the IceHL Project is moving right along. Today, I'm unveiling the team names and accepting logo design submissions for both teams.

  • Hartford Mariners
  • Northwest Narwhals

Based on these names, your task — should you choose to accept it — is to brand the franchises. You choose the color scheme and design primary, secondary and script logos around that. You may design additional logos, but these 3 will be the ones included in the voting process.

Submit your work to icethetics@gmail.com. I'm also outlining guidelines for submissions below. If you don't follow them, your work will probably not be included.

Logo submission deadline: Saturday, May 5

  • DO NOT STEAL ARTWORK. Logos copied or even adapted from existing designs will not be accepted. Do something original!
  • Submit THREE (3) logos: primary, secondary and wordmark. Vector format (PDF) is preferred. If you cannot provide a vector version, a high-resolution PNG will be acceptable. Use a white background. If your logo requires a white outline (think old Lightning or Capitals logos), then use a gray background with the white outline included. ALL 3 LOGOS will be used in the voting process. If you leave out one, your work may be disqualified.
  • You must include your first and last name within the graphic itself as well as the email. I need them in both places so I can easily search my email to find your artwork and email address.
  • By submitting your own original artwork to any Icethetics email address, you agree to grant permission of its use for online or print publication by Icethetics. Do not watermark your logos. Your work will be protected for use in projects related to Icethetics only.
  • No jersey concepts, please. That will come later on.

I'm happy to answer any additional questions you may have. All logo submissions that meet the above criteria will be included in the voting process next month.

A few years ago when we did this for the rest of the IceHL teams, there were some incredible logo designs submitted. I can't be certain whether the same talented artists will be with us this time around, but I do hope so. Good luck to everyone!

Could you tell us the runner-up names.

Northwest Narwhals. A beautiful name. The combination of an "N" to start and a "w" in the middle in both words flows so perfect together. My number 1 choice from the list and by far the best. I really cant wait to see what logos and color sets people come up for this.

Hartford Mariners I don't like, but that is largely because of the baseball team of the same name.

George: Sure thing. Yellowknife Miners and Yellowknife Narwhals were the 2nd and 3rd place names for the Northwest Territories team. For the Hartford team, it was Connecticut Sea Wolves and Connecticut Clippers as a distant 2nd and 3rd. Hartford Revolution wasn't far behind those.

Is it possible to submit a 4th logo like a few others have in the past?

I agree with A. Northwest Narwhals has a good ring to it and I don't like names that are already other team names. Out of the runners up, I would have like Connecticut Sea Wolves better for the Hartford team.

I love the Northwest Narwhals name too. It's about as perfect a name as you can get.

Ben: Yes, you can create as many logos as you like for your set, but only the main 3 will be on display for voting. Level playing field and all.

That Northwest Narwhals set is going to be BEAUTIFUL!

As for the Hartford Mariners, I thought there was a rule that no WHA team names were allowed? (Or did you make an exception since the San Diego Mariners are kinda obscure? The Sea Wolves wouldn't be eligible either, as Hartford used to have an Arena Football team called the New England Sea Wolves.)

Overall, the identities are gonna be SWEET! I would pay good money for some Narwhals gear...

When expansion and relocation time comes, how about we resurrect the old IHA teams? (Remember that one Chris?!)

Wonderful!!! Northwest Narwhals is the best team concept you can ever imagine!
When and how will be the process of choosing a new manager? I'm already candidate ;)

Can you submit 2 sets of different logos or is it just the one set?

Apr 20 · 2:19 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterPhil

I don't know why but I really hope the Narwhals have a yellow and black color scheme. I can't wait for the logo!

Dan: Of course I remember the IHA! I didn't think anyone else did. But that was a project I ran for another guy. The IHA actually exists out there somewhere in cyberspace using the logos we created and voted on. I'll have to look it up someday.

Phil: You may submit as many logo sets as you like. Just make sure you include distinct primary, secondary and wordmark logos in each.

Looking forward to what comes up. I just hope the color schemes are unique. No more blue on blue or green on green, please.

It just came to mind that the plural form of Narwhal is Narwhal. But I guess it's on the same grounds as Maple Leafs.
