The Wayne Gretzky trade ushers in a new identity for the Los Angeles Kings in 1988 as the purple and gold are swapped for black and silver. Elsewhere, the Minnesota North Stars add black trim to their logo and uniforms. These are two example of black becoming a trend in NHL branding as the 1980s start to wind down.

Also, in 1989, the Canucks ditched their "gold" home jerseys for the standard white home jerseys at that time.
