The guy two posts above me saying that the blue jackets logo represents it's country, not the area but it's country must not have read anything in the comments section.

1. The flag wrapped around the star is an Ohio state flag, not an American flag. There's no triangular blue area or a red circle in the American flag

2. The star that the flag is wrapped around represents the fact that Columbus is the state capital of Ohio.

3. And thirdly, the Ohio flag is bent in the shape of a C which stands for Columbus.

I just stated two examples that the Blue Jackets logo represent it's city and one for it's state. Anyone who says it doesn't mean anything from now on is just ignorant.

if this were a poll between cbj and the todd mcfarlane design for the oilers third jersey then my vote would most likely be for the oilers but all I can think about when I look at this oilers logo is "80s" and anything that reminds me of that horrible decade just can't get my vote

After reading all the comments about what CBJ's logo represents, I must admit that I've changed my mind about it. It's more than just stars and stripes. There is actually some cool meaning symbolism behind it.... However, as smybolic as it is, the average NHL hockey fan who doesn't live in Ohio doesn't see it. A logo is supposed to represent your team and your city to the rest of the league. Unfortunatly to most of the uninformed NHL fans, the CBJ logo represents what? The city where they've got nothing to be proud of expect being american? (I now know that's wrong)

Edmonton wins by default.

Since you posted to me, allow me to reply!

1. The flag wrapped around the star is an Ohio state flag, not an American flag. There's no triangular blue area or a red circle in the American flag

As posted above you people have posted the Ohio state flag and I quote "Definitely not the same as the logo. Count the stars and see the proportions of the circles."

2. The star that the flag is wrapped around represents the fact that Columbus is the state capital of Ohio.

A star is representative of many things, when I look at the logo I see stars and I see stripes. When you hear the saying stars and stripes what is the first thing that pops into your mind?

3. And thirdly, the Ohio flag is bent in the shape of a C which stands for Columbus.

Which is a hidden detail I didn't know about before the comments here. I am also the 11:26 AM comment from yesterday. You will see that I agree their logo is better than the old one, however for pretty much everyone who doesn't live in the Ohio area, the jackets logo visably has more to do with the country than with the city/team.

Just because the flag isn't exactly the same as the logo, the flag in the logo still resembles the actual flag of Ohio. And the 12 stars on the logo could represent the fact that the city was founded in 1812. Even if it wasn't intentional, that is a representation of the city of Columbus.

"...but to say that the Oilers' logo somehow signifies the area or team any better than the Blue Jackets' is just plain silly."

In case you don't know the Oilers represent Northern Alberta. On all the game tickets this year, there was a different location of N. Alberta. New Your In Oil Country billboards can be seen everywhere in the city, in small towns, and throughout the province. Alberta is a very significant source of crude petroleum and exports it to other countries including the western U.S. For you to think that Oilers has nothing to do with Edmonton is just "plain silly".

The Oilers symbol doesn't represent the team or the city? Are you guys that naive? I mean, I know Americans know jack about Canada, but geez. First off, a drip of Oil and the drooping letters easily represents the team's name... "Oilers". Is it that hard to understand?

Now, Alberta has been experiencing an incredible economic boom. Why do you think this is? The mountains? Their prairies that blow-ass for farming(unless it's irrigated)? NO! For the OIL! I didn't know that this sort of thing needed to be explained.

Besides, is Nashville known for its Predators? No. It's got a cool logo, and not because it's got "hidden messages".

The Oilers' logo is better, for both "city representation" and aesthetics.

Oilers logo for sure. It does a much better job representing the team name.

The Columbus one looks like a logo for an all-star game

Aug 18 · 8:41 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I don't think you can say a logo "represents the team name" when the logo has the team name written in it.

But that's the first GOOD argument I've read about the Jackets logo. I'll admit it DOES look like an All-Star Logo, but definitely NOT a team USA logo.

*Blue Jackets*

I dont like the edmonton logo and columbus made a great upgrade recently.

Aug 20 · 11:12 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterMicky

to be honest i liked the other columbus jersey better

Aug 21 · 2:34 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Columbus does have a sharp looking logo, but I just don't like, it looks awkward

Aug 22 · 1:35 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Hockey is more than a sport: it's a culture.
People in Colombus don't get that.
Culture rimes with tradition and with tradition comes perfection. That's why the Oilers and the Habs logos are winning.

the only hockey team that should be drawing on the civil war is gettysburg, should they ever be awarded a franchise.

columbus fails for the same reason buffalo does, the logo is all about the city and not the team. spare me anymore info about its meaning. i was prolly one of 3 non ohio people in this country that understood the logo when it was debuted as an alternate awhile back. the ohio flag may be the only triangle/pendant shaped state flag in the nation, but it doesnt make a good universal logo. i could see it as a road jersey crest but at home they are not the Ohio Columbusians. how, if possible, is anyone to know they are the BlueJackets by looking at it.

that said the oilers isnt the greatest but it is nice enough to have lasted this long. the text may seem like its trying to beat you over the head, but a rig would have made them look like the old nfl team and any literal attempts to logo the name would only create crappy ones, like their little oil man of recent years.

Oilers will take this easily

Aug 23 · 12:16 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I can't believe that the Oilers are going to win this. The Oilers logo is, next to the Panthers logo, the WORST in the league.

Aug 24 · 12:05 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Both are great logos. From a design stand point the Oilers logo is simple and to the point and I love anything that has effective typography the way Edmonton's does. However, the CBJ logo was way more context and was designed for the people of the State of Ohio so it makes a lot of sense to them. I don't expect Canadians to understand it especially when your average person from Canada thinks most Americans are flag waving, TV watching morons.

It's just too bad the Oilers logo is as boring as the city of Edmonton. Blue Jackets win.

Aug 24 · 6:43 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

The Oilers logo is one of the most recognized logos in the league. The BLuejacket's logo is just plain old, well, uh, (think-think-think)...weird. It has nothing to do with hockey or the name, just the city. You could probably use that same logo in NFL or MLB for a Columbus team (couldn't do that with the Oilers' logo). People automatically (or they should) think one the of the best teams in sports when you see the Oilers logo.

Aug 24 · 6:52 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

The Oilers logo should win for no other reason than it represents the last great NHL Stanley Cup Dynasty and was the logo The Great One wore to infamey. Anyone who isn't reminded of this is obviously clueless to some of the most important NHL history. What the Oilers logo brings to mind makes it worthy of winning, hands down. Never mind its lasted since the beginning of the team.

Aug 24 · 9:55 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

FYI The Blue Jackets were actually have something todo with a group in one of the Wars, not too sure exactly though.

Aug 29 · 4:15 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I wish I could have voted down the Columbus logo just out of my pure disgust for it. The anonymous poster from August 18th had it right: it DOES look like an All-Star Game logo. Take a look at the 2001 All Star Game from Denver here

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:NHL-ASG_4656.gif

Total rip-off of the Avalanche logo, and the Colorado all-star logo. Too bad those two couldn't go head to head.

Sep 4 · 6:46 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

You guys are funny... You can't come up with a good excuse, so you say the logo has to immediately tell you all about the team and city? LOL - whatever.

Take a look around sports in general and I think it's pretty obvious that logos are meant to appeal to a fan base and not give the history of the team. If people can't tell flags apart (USA v Ohio's), then that's a learning issue and not a detriment to the logo. Moreover, you can't get much more symbolic of a city or state than having that state's flag as a logo. I'm sure people in Ohio appreciate it even if other people think that the only flag in America (only 2 in the whole world!) not in a rectangular shape is actually a rectangular American flag... Maybe Ohio should get a new flag eh?

The logo looks good, represents what they want to represent and meshes well with the unis -
